Cheryl Shops Fall Shopping Guide: Drawstring Bucket Bags

I, like nearly every other fashion blogger in existence, nearly wet my pants over Alexander Wang’s studded Coco bag. Apparently, so did everyone else: There is a 400-person wait list for the bag at Barneys, and all of Wang’s spring bags have already sold out–before even hitting the sales floor. However, in all my excitement over the Coco, I overlooked an even better option: the Diego. This bag is so cool, I think it has the power to resurrect the bucket bag, a round, drawstring style that was last popular in the ’80s. The great thing about the Diego is that it has two straps, one that fits over the shoulder, and one that can be worn crossbody, not to mention it has that studded, washed-leather look that all of Wang’s bags have. The bad thing, however, is that like the Coco, the Diego is sold out everywhere. So until I can get my hands on one, here are some worthy alternatives.

While Sigerson Morrison is best known for their shoes, they make some great bags too (I have a clutch that’s nearly 10 years old, and I still use it all the time). Their big bucket bag doesn’t have a long crossbody strap or studs, but it does have a coolly textured leather that’s very similar to Wang’s.

MCM’s Sportivo hobo is not technically a bucket bag, but it definitely has a drawstring, and the shape is more classic, thus making this bag more investment-worthy (you know, in case you’re concerned that bucket bags might be a flash in the pan).

More bucket bags after the jump…

Object of Desire: Alexander Wang Anya Booties

Being a New Yorker, I have a lot–possibly too much–black in my closet, particularly when it comes to blazers, skirts, pants, and boots. Counting everything from booties to knee-high boots, I’d estimate that I have at least 10 pairs, most of which I do routinely wear, and this year I will probably buy at least another pair. (Because, hey, they’re all different!) My last few purchases have been booties, which I’ve found work with both pants and skirts, and while I have a patent Sigerson Morrison and a cutout Loeffler Randall, what I don’t have is a great platform bootie. Which is why Alexander Wang’s Anya booties are totally perfect. The 5-inch heel will put me over 6 feet tall and elongate my legs in this season’s ultra-skinny pants, while the 1.25-inch platform will help with the comfort issue. The sculpted heel is ultra-hot, and the pleating gives the bootie an interesting texture, avoiding the fin-like effect that some booties can have on one’s feet. In fact, the only thing that’s not perfect about them is the price: $590. However, unlike Wang’s drool-worthy handbags, they aren’t sold out everywhere, which at least makes them attainable–and in light of how much a pair of Louboutins or YSL shoes costs, $600 for boots almost seems downright reasonable. The Anya boots are also available on Wang’s newly-launched e-commerce site in black or in chalk, with a forward-thinking clear heel (a look that’s been showing up all over the spring runways). Hey, what’s another pair of black boots when I already own 10?

Leather Vests for non-Biker Chicks

leather-moto-vest

OK, so when I first heard the words, “leather vest,” my mind conjured up images of bikers wearing their riveted up, tassled out leather vests while hoggin’ it down the highway in the film, “Easy Rider”.  Could I pull off a leather biker vest? When I saw the Alexander Wang and Mike & Chris versions of leather vests, I got a little weak in the knees immediately had to own one. They can be a bit pricey, and you may not have a grand or so to spend on leather vests, but I there are a variety of  hot leather vests in a wide variety of prices for any budget.

Alexander Wang Brenda Zip Bag

alexander-wang

It is no surprise that if a highly photographed celeb is spotted carrying a handbag many others might follow. Sometimes I agree with what celebs deem as hot and other times I disagree. Lindsay Lohan has been seen all over town carrying the Alexander Wang Donna Hobo. While I wasn’t exactly sure how I felt about the hobo, the smaller Alexander Wang Brenda Zip Bag is a knock out. The zip bag is a bit smaller than the hobo and it is gorgeous.

What we have here is down right touchable leather with distressed denim look. The washed leather and silver hardware work well together. Certainly the silver hardware doesn’t exactly pop, but that is totally acceptable. Another fabulous aspect of this bag is the snake-chain strap; it is simply urban chic. Worried that the chain strap will dig into your shoulder? Fear not, there is a leather patch which will rest oh so fashionably on your shoulder. This is definitely a bag that boasts celebrity style as well as completely doable for those of us who haven’t quite reached celeb status.

Alexander Wang Shoes and Accessories for Fall 2009

alexanderwang_accessories_f
Alexander Wang is on a roll. A Parsons dropout he launched his full women’s collection in 2007, followed by a diffusion line of gorgeous cotton tees and tanks, a footwear and accessories line and a men’s collection set to debut this month. He won the CFDA/Fashion Fund Award in 2008, an honor accompanied by a $20,000 award to expand his business. I’m a fan of most of what he turns out – but even when it comes to the few things I don’t like, I have to respect his ingenuity. His pieces are different from the what’s out there and I expect very big things from him in the future. Case in point: the fall 2009 shoes and accessories collection. Gorgeous – and different. I love all of it but I really love the sexy two-toned clear heels with the leather tip. I’m still pining over the cross-body bag from spring so it is good to know I have multiple options to redeem myself this fall. The line will hit major retailers soon. (via Nitro:licious)

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists for Gap Collection

cfdamainpic.jpg

Finalists of the 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund have created a limited edition for Gap inspired by the classic Gap khaki. The collection launched online yesterday and will be available in select stores for a limited time only starting June 19.

In case you didn’t know, the CFDA Awards are pretty much the Oscars of fashion, so the opportunity to wear a piece designed by one of the finalists is practically an honor. And for $88 or less, how can you pass it up?
In the past, Gap has partnered with CFDA winners Phillip Lim, Rodarte and Doo.Ri. This year, the finalists were Vena Cava, Albertus Swanpoel and Alexander Wang. What do you think? Will you be scrambling to the nearest Gap on June 19 to score some designer khaki? To shop the collection or find out if it will be coming to a store near you, click here.

Buy It: Alexander Wang’s “You Look Skinny” Muscle Tee

awang2024026625_prod_zoom_front_v1_m56577569831641820
When it comes to my appearance, the best compliment you can pay me is, “You look skinny.” Which probably offers a deeper-than-expected view into my psyche, but whatever, this is my blog. I’ve heard “You look skinny” several times from several different people in the last few months, and I can only come to two conclusions: One, my body has become leaner due to Core Fusion classes at Exhale (I don’t normally cover fitness on Cheryl Shops, but if anyone wants to hear about my experience with Core Fusion, I will gladly write about it–leave a comment or email me). The other is that whenever people have recently told me I looked skinny, I’ve been wearing a T-shirt from T by Alexander Wang. I know I have sung the praises of Wang before. And you may argue that any old T-shirt is just as good, but I genuinely believe that Wang’s muscle tee is worth the price. Yes, any factory in China can reproduce a similar shape, in a similarly slinky jersey, for $20 or so. But Wang’s tee is cut precisely to flatter: The neckline lays perfectly at the top of your décolletage, the sleeves cut across the upper arm at just the right angle, and the fluid, draped fit skims your body without being clingy. And I can’t think of anything else in my wardrobe that makes me feel sexier. So, in the vein of Master Card’s commercials: Alexander Wang’s muscle tee: $78. Everyone telling you that you look skinny: priceless.

Alexander Wang Does Makeup

alexanderwangmakeup
The current darling of the fashion world branches out

Yesterday WWD announced today that Alexander Wang has signed on to develop a 12-piece collection for Shiseido’s Maquillage makeup line. His offerings will include lip gloss, lipstick, and eye shadow. And we’re guessing they’ll have his signature edge.

The downside: the Wang-Shiseido line will only be available in Asia come July. So, unless you’re booking a ticket abroad this summer, you’ll have to wait to see the spread used on the Wang runway during New York Fashion Week. But no worries, we’ll keep you posted!
