Spider Lashes That Actually Look Chic? Thakoon Proves its Possible!

Spider lashes. They’re a beauty faux pas, typically caused by clumpy mascara (or just one coat too many), that makeup lovers everywhere have trained long and hard to avoid at all costs. But what if they could actually be… chic?! The models representing Thakoon’s Spring 2014 runway presentation proved that thick, spidery fringe isn’t all that bad after all – in fact, it makes eyes pop in a fresh new way that eliminates the need for heavy shadow and liner. Makeup artist Diane Kendal layered models’ lashes in at least three coats of NARS’ Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara backstage at the show. That’s certainly a doable option, but you can also get a similar look without drowning your own fringe by using tweezers to pinch together small groups of neighboring lashes to form exaggerated, doll-inspired points. If you’re not afraid of falsies, Make Up For Ever has a pair of fake fringe that will help you achieve a similar look as well – hit up your local Sephora and look for the pair named 130 Jennifer. What say you, beauty mavens – are you a fan of Thakoon’s spidery, seventies-inspired fringe? Sound off in the comments below! Photo Credit: Style.com

3 Ways to Wear Glitter Eyeliner This New Year’s Eve (or Whenever)!

This time of year, glitter, rhinestones, and sequins reign supreme! But how do you pull off the glitzy look without looking like a total beauty novice? Break out the glitter liner, because there are several ways to rock sparkle this season – all of which can be done without getting glitter on the rest of your face!

Personally, I’m a big fan of liquid glitter liners (as opposed to sparkly pencil liners), because they’re super concentrated with glitter and just as easy to apply. Plus, since it’s sticky with a clear base, it practically comes with its own adhesive – simply dab on over eyeshadow, or use your finger to pat on your lid to add some extra glitz to your favorite smoky eye look, without getting glitter all over your cheeks.

If you want to edge things up a bit, go for a pop of glitter on the lower lash line only. Play it safe with your typical black liner on the top lid, then line the bottom lid with a colorful glittery liner in emerald, blue, or purple. For maximum impact, use a matching shadow or liner underneath the liner to make the glitter really stand out. This is my favorite way to wear glitter liner, as it’s unexpected and dramatic without overpowering or over-glitzing your whole look – plus, it gives me an excuse to finally dabble with all the crazy, unconventional shadow and liner shades I’ve collected over the years!

Thirdly, you can skip the liquid liner altogether and go with a . If you still haven’t mastered the steady-handedness required to apply the perfect cat-eye, opt for these glitter stick-on versions by Sephora! Sure, they may also require some practice to apply seamlessly, but you’re left with budge-free, symmetrical glittery wings all night!

Tempting Vanilla Fragrances – No Apron Required!

Jennifer Love Hewitt swears by the scent of vanilla – so much, in fact, that she actually carries straight vanilla extract with her and dabs it on her neck for frequent touch-ups (hey, I don’t judge). After all, vanilla is pretty potent stuff – it’s sweet yet musky and packs a powerful punch that smacks of confidence. And if the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, a bold fragrance that conjures up images of delicious baked goods has got to be at least vaguely alluring when it comes to getting your flirt on – especially when it doesn’t require you to even step foot in the kitchen in the first place! So let’s skip the trip to the pantry and check out some of spring’s sexiest vanilla-infused fragrances! For one, Jo Malone’s Vanilla & Anise fragrance is a great starting point if you’re looking for something that’s sensual but with a more subtle, herbal fragrance; however, if you’re hoping for a scent that appeals to your sweet tooth, Demeter’s Vanilla Cake Batter has you covered! For something a bit more luxe, Guerlain Matiere Double Vanille is powerful and sexy with a hint of pink peppercorn and fresh bergamot. And if you’re more of a citrusy type of girl, embrace spring with this Vanilla Grapefruit Fragrance from LAVANILA!

Gorgeous Gold Eyeliner Inspired By The Hunger Games!

Lenny Kravitz may have done a marvelous job at pulling off a surprisingly masculine take on gold liner for his role as District 12’s stylist Cinna in The Hunger Games, but all I could think about during his scenes is how I couldn’t wait to try the trend on my own lids! When used in moderation – in this case, a simple yet bold line on the top lid – gold eye makeup can look sleek and sophisticated and gorgeously fresh for spring. Unlike a full-on metallic smoky eye (which is probably best saved for New Year’s Eve or other winter-festive soirees), a downplayed take on gold-accented liner provides a more subtle, light-reflective gleam that brings out your eyes and makes lashes pop. Keep the rest of your makeup minimal – we’re going for statement-making simplicity here – and finish off with a few healthy coats of your favorite mascara for a look that’s fresh yet fierce! After all, Cinna would never steer us wrong, would he?

“Brow-dazzling” Courtesy of Chanel – Are You a Fan?

In this day and age, the fashion world’s love of all things luxe has us bedazzling just about everything – from our clothing and accessories to our phones and even our nether regions. But leave it to Chanel to take things a step further with their  fashion-forward brow-dazzling for its Fall 2012 show. We wouldn’t call it innovative, exactly – after all, Ke$ha has been known to rock studs on her eyebrows on the red carpet and in her videos – but it’s definitely an interesting approach to Chanel makeup director Peter Philips’ mineral-inspired beauty looks. It’s an edgy-cool vision for the runway, but given that the look is undoubtedly extreme, do you think it could actually evolve into a trend? If you’re one to walk on the adventurous side, you can try the look yourself with lash glue and some jewel appliques. What do you think – do you think Chanel’s bedazzled brows could be translated into a wearable real-life look? Image Credit: Style.com

Get The Look: Navy Lashes Inspired by Stella McCartney Fall 2012

Stella McCartney’s models made waves with their stunning cobalt liner during the designer’s pre-fall show back in January, and makeup maven Pat McGrath decided to keep the blue love alive for the Fall 2012 show, this time in the form of moody-cool midnight lashes. While this runway-ready look is a bit extreme with its spidery, doll-inspired lash look, you can get your own modern and wearable interpretation of the look in a variety of ways! If you’ve never tried colored mascara before, you may be surprised at how eye-catching it can be without coming off as too distracting – curl lashes and apply a couple coats of a navy or cobalt mascara like Buxom Lash Mascara Special Effects in Blue Noir. If you’re feeling daring and want to experiment with a night-out look, swap your regular false lashes with a cool navy pair – Shu Uemura has a good selection to play with! And if you’re one of those girls who refuse to stray from her tried-and-true black mascara, but still want to jump aboard the blue bandwagon, try lining your waterline and the outer corners of your lash line with a navy liner, like Tarte EmphasEYES Aqua-Gel Liner in Navy!  Photo Credit: Style.com

Rimmell London’s Kate Moss Lipstick Collection – Are You Buyin’ It?

Kate Moss’s supermodel beauty secrets can be yours for just $5.49?! Okay, not quite, but the Rimmel London spokeswoman just released her first-ever collection of lasting lip color for the brand last month, and I’d be lying if the magazine ads didn’t have me at least slightly intrigued. I’ve never been much of a lipstick queen myself, but when it comes to testing out bargain drugstore beauty buys, I have a hard time convincing myself to hold back. “My inspiration for this range was really to create a range of easy to wear, chic, modern shades that I have always worn and loved,” Moss said. “From bright reds to soft pinks and nudes, there is a shade for everyone and any occasion.” I agree that the selection of shades is a good mix of versatile, wearable, and fun, and it’s hard to deny that the packaging and design (with Kate’s bold red signature) is pretty sexy, for a lipstick. Have you tried Kate Moss’s new Rimmel London shades? What do you think?

We Love Accent Nails! 3 Polish Pairings You Must Try

  • posted March 1st, 2012
  • Beauty

I can’t take all the credit (or blame?) for my most recent nail polish obsession. In fact, when accent nails first became popular, I wasn’t really a fan at all – I was too attached to the beautiful uniformity of my regular/boring manicures (kind of a big deal since I only recently was able to grow my brittle nails to the same length)! However, I can’t deny that the statement-making look is really starting to grow on me, and when one of my equally style-obsessed friends recently showed me her fresh mint tips with a teal glitter accent nail, a new infatuation was born. After all, I am a sucker for glitter, especially accent glitter…. and what better way to embrace spring and summer than with a mermaid mani? Right – there is no better way, but I do have a couple other fabulous polish pairings that may also float your boat!

Nude and coral: neutral hues and “naked” nails have been the hot trend for a couple seasons now, so amp up the look with an accent nail in the second-hottest hue – coral! I love Deborah Lippmann’s Girls Just Want to Have Fun for the perfect vibrant coral, and the celebrity favorite HIPPxRGB collabo has a series of Nail Foundations so you can find your perfect nude shade!

Show your school pride! March Madness is fast approaching, so flash your colors (and impress your guy friends with your dedication) with a spirited polish duo. I chose blue and “gold” (maybe the Bruins will have better luck this year), courtesy of OPI’s The It Color and Orly’s Snowcone shade.

…And let’s not forget the mermaid look! My personal favorite, as far as the perfect mint shade is concerned, is China Glaze’s Refresh Mint. Paint all nails with the sea foam shade, then choose one accent nail to top with the glitter overlay, shown above in Milani Jewel FX in Teal.

Lola Cosmetics’ Duo Lipsticks Are Two-Faced (In a Good Way)!

  • posted March 1st, 2012

When it comes to my lip color, I’m more than a little bit indecisive. Sometimes I want high-shine gloss; sometimes I’ll go for a more natural, matte lip stain. Sometimes I’ll stick to neutral shimmers; other times I’ll switch it up with a punchy pink or vampy crimson – often all in the same day. As a result, I almost always have up to six different lip shades in my handbag at any given time, so I always have the option to switch things up or upgrade my look from day to night. And as much as I like to always be prepared (maybe it’s the former Girl Scout in me), I’d love to lighten the load of my daily haul. Enter Lola Cosmetics two-in-one lip color, which gives the best of two worlds in one handy stick. The Duo Lipstick comes in five different shade combos – either a frosty shade paired with a bold matte color, or two coordinating shades with a similar finish – so you can switch up your look depending on the occasion, or even layer the shades together for your own custom look. For only $22 a pop, these handy little duos are hard to pass up for a lipstick addict like me!
