Cobalt Polish Makes For Edgy Yet Sophisticated Nails!

  • posted March 1st, 2012

Now that Spring has just about sprung (in the shopping world, that is!), celebrities and trend-setters are starting to ditch their winter reds, trendy nudes, and festive glitters for more adventurous hues. And this season, cobalt is having a major moment. It’s a bit more lively than navy, edgier than soft powder blue, and more sophisticated than electric blue, for the perfect mix of bold and chic. Beyonce has been spotted out and about rockin’ Nails Inc. best-selling shade Baker Street (a tribute to Blue Ivy, perhaps?), which is a great starter shade for those looking to venture into statement-making blue nails! For the perfect royal blue, I love American Apparel’s Mount Royal and OPI’s Dating a Royal for a pure, glitz-free cobalt shade. If you’re looking for something with a bit more shine, Essie’s Aruba Blue has a pretty metallic sheen, while Express’ Cerulean shade (part of a new-for-spring beauty collection!) has a superfine shimmer.

Eye Spy Kat Von D’s Triple Threat Tattoo Liners!

I don’t have anything against Kat Von D or her beauty line, it’s just that Sephora is the makeup mothership for so many brands that I rarely give myself a chance to try something new and unfamiliar, unless it’s something that has a ton of beauty buzz surrounding it, or a certain product just happens to really catch my eye. Enter the Triple Threat Tattoo Liner trio – a handy set of three liquid liners that each boast a different brush tip to suit whatever style you happen to adopt that day – whether you’re going for that smudgy rocker-chick look or are still trying to achieve that perfect cat-eye. As someone who often double-fists with different makeup products just to complete one look (I often use one liner for my top lid, another one for my bottom lid, and another one altogether for my waterline), I can totally appreciate the collaborative effort of different brush tips to get the perfect look or to help achieve totally different looks to suit your mood!

Lancome Debuts Its Long-Lasting Rouge in Love Lipstick Collection

Although I’m quite the avid makeup shopper (and experimenter!), I only just recently started venturing into the realm of lipstick in place of my tried-and-true favorite glosses. That’s a pretty big deal for me – especially as someone who appreciates the room-for-error convenience of just haphazardly swiping on a quick coat of gloss and going about my business – so if I’m going to put in the extra effort of carefully applying a bold lip color, it better be fabulous and it better last! Lancome’s new line of lipsticks, Rouge in Love, strives to excel in both those areas. With a series of 21 shades (divided into three themed “moods” to suit different occasions!), Rouge in Love provides shades that are pretty and fresh enough to wear during the day, but are buildable enough to make a sexy statement for night as well. High-shine, highly pigmented, and long-lasting (up to 6 hours of freshly-applied perfection!), Rouge in Love’s shades are worth the slight splurge at $25 a pop!

Can’t Wait For Pantone’s Collection for Sephora? Check Out These Tangerine Makeup Picks

Pantone, the world authority on color, always gives fashion and beauty mavens an additional reason to look forward to the start of each new year. While the proclaimed Color of the Year doesn’t always influence our style decisions year-round, it’s still fun to take note and jump on the trends that pop up as a result! This year, we’re ready to take things up a notch with Tangerine Tango – and if you’re unsure about how to incorporate the in-your-face orange shade into your regular beauty routine, Pantone itself is offering to help out with an exclusive upcoming collection with Sephora, due out in March! The collection will feature a series of makeup and beauty accessories in tangerine and orange shades done right, but if you can’t wait until March, I’ve compiled a couple choice picks to get you started! Whether you’d rather play it safe with a more sheer tangerine gloss or blush, or would rather jump right into the trend with orange shadow for a playful pop of color, you’ll soon find that orange shades are much more flattering than they sound… when done right!

Benefit’s Watt’s Up Highlighter is Here to Brighten Up Your Beauty Routine

Is it too early to start compiling 2012’s Christmas wish list? Just kidding – lucky for my wallet and me, the latest makeup must-have I’ve got my sights set on is hardly a splurge and worth every penny! Benefit’s brand-new addition to their modest collection of facial highlighters, Watt’s Up, serves up a pretty cream-to-powder champagne-hued sheen that’s multi-flattering and softly gorgeous for any occasion. I’ve never been much of a blush girl, but I’ve developed a recent obsession with their more subtle cousin, as highlighters still work to sculpt and flatter without the added pressure of finding your perfect shade. Blend with fingers, a stippling brush, or the handy sponge applicator that comes with it depending on your desired effect and coverage. Oily complexions beware – be sure to use sparingly to accent cheekbones and work the light to your advantage. You may be surprised by how far a little touch of highlighter can go when it comes to boosting your overall glow!

Party On With Frosty Pink Pastel Lips

If you’re a girl who likes to make a statement with a look-at-me shade of lipstick, and your most trusted go-to shade is fierce glossy red, you may have been disappointed to notice that the rest of the beauty world has caught on to the trend, making your signature red lips not so statement-making after all. But all the more reason to jump on an all-new trend, ahead of the pack, for lips that pop in a whole new way. While lighter lipstick shades are typically saved for the more demure beauty queens who like to keep the focus on other parts of their makeup look, this season’s bold take on frosty pink lips will have you rethinking your stance on pastels! With their opaque finish and frosty sheen, color-rich pastel pink shades manage to stand out in a way that’s a retro-fabulous (hellooo 80’s!) but somehow fashion-forward at the same time. Serve up some contrast by pairing with dramatic black liner, or with your favorite ultra-shimmery shadow to balance the opaque matte pink!

Trim The Tree With Festive Beauty Ornaments!

‘Tis the season to spread holiday cheer… and for a bona-fide beauty addict, what could possibly be more cheerful than ornaments filled with beauty goodies?! This season’s most gorgeous makeup and beauty gifts come packaged in a super-adorable fashion – nested right inside ornament capsules, or adorned with ribbon – so you deck the halls and trim the tree with darling beauty gifts, for you and your fellow makeup mavens! Of course, these will hardly be keepsake decorations that you can pass along for generations to come, but it is a pretty sweet idea if you’re still looking for the perfect gifts for the beauty junkies on your list! Some of my favorites are the MAC Dazzlespheres, which encase some of the brand’s best-selling seasonal items like Dazzleglass and Cremesheen Lipglasses, shimmery pigments, or limited edition nail lacquers. And for the skincare-obsessed ladies on your list, look no further than Philosophy’s sweet ornament gifts, which house some of the brand’s must-haves like Purity One-Step Facial Cleanser and Hope in a Jar!

Get Dazzling Eyes This Season With Tinsel-Colored Liner

Holiday party season is officially here, and if you’re opting to go the subtle route fashion-wise by avoiding ultra-sparkly cocktail dresses and glitter heels at all costs, there’s still plenty of ways to add some celebratory glitz to your seasonal party look! Instead, try focusing the festiveness on your makeup. Metallic silver liner adds just the slightest dash of holiday vixen appeal that makes a surprisingly gorgeous impact. It’s like tinsel for your eyes… which is way less painful than it sounds! Try not to go too 90s-fabulous with the trend (that whole frosty lid look might make you look dated), and instead stick to just the corners of your eye and the inner rim. Similar to how white pencil makes peepers appear wider and brighter, silver liner will make eyes sparkle with a sexy metallic sheen. Also, make sure you pick an easy-glide, extra-bright chrome silver – darker gunmetal shades just won’t have the same tinselly effect!

Warm Up With an Earthy Red Blush

I gotta admit, out of all the makeup I’ve collected over the years, from lipgloss and lipstick to eyeshadow, liners, mascara and beyond, blush is one thing I’m not totally addicted to. While I usually stick to shimmery highlighter or subtle bronzer for just the slightest luminizing glow, as the weather starts getting chillier, I do appreciate a rosy flush. There’s something about the look of a wind-blown complexion that’s sweet and pretty but still undeniably natural – but as any makeup maven knows, achieving that whole ‘trying-without-looking-like-you’re-trying’ appearance can be harder than it looks! So how do you achieve winter-festive rosy cheeks without looking like a porcelain doll – or worse – a clown? Look no further than an earthy russet red blush. While in the compact, the shade looks a bit extreme and intimidating, but don’t fret! You’ll be surprised at how flattering and sheer the shade applies on your skin, especially after proper blending. ‘Tis the season for gorgeous, winter flushed cheeks!

Protect Your Colorful Pucker With a Lipstick Sealer

  • posted October 29th, 2011

As makeup-obsessed as I may be, lipstick is one thing I’m always a little iffy about. I know, it’s embarrassing, as someone who’s supposed to fearless when it comes to any and all products and trends… lipstick of all things should hardly be my Achilles’ heel. I’ve always been more of a dramatic-eyes-and-natural-gloss girl, but a recent retro costume night – complete with fire engine red lipstick – has me totally rethinking my trepidation toward richer lip hues. However, unlike nude gloss, bold lipstick can easily smudge, feather, end up on your teeth, your date, and other embarrassing places. And if I’m being realistic, if I’m finally going to embrace my untapped potential in the realm of colorful lipstick, I need a fool-proof way to rock it – no disasters! And a lipstick sealer is the way to do it – just top off your lush coat of lip color with one of these clear gloss-like sealers and your color will wear longer, smudge less (or never!), and stay put throughout drinks, smooches, and splashes.
