Bonjour Chanel, Bienvenue!

by Carlina Harris

Who doesn’t love a little black dress? A strand of elegant pearls? A short tweed jacket? An always forever classic set of “c’s” interlocking? Ah Chanel- my one true yet very expensive love! You’re back from hiatus, vacation, fashion week? Who knows, all I heard is that you left me months ago, leaving me and our spot at Maiden Lane all alone to be sad, depressed and fashion-less.

Whats that? Your back, and you’re opening your pristine doors once again to an even better, and more extravagant boutique in San Francisco. Glory be, music to my ears, how I waited for this day. We shall be reunited once again! But I am not a jealous gal, I know I can’t keep you all to myself.

So here’s the deets: November 20, and 21 from 10am-6pm, the official re-opening of the renovated boutique. Enjoy the festivities with complimentary makeup sessions, and discover the Cruise Collection exclusives.

My Five Favorite Fashion Apps

R4C1rATB2bw0htwxiGnk8cxS_500

Chanel: This is my favorite fashion app.  I think what I love most is how this old and established fashion house successfully maintains relevancy and the Chanel App is testament to that. Chanel was one of the first fashion houses to podcast fashion shows – and the shows are amazing! The news feature has “Karl’s Notes,” which includes behind the scenes looks at fashion shoots and exclusive features like ongoing episodes that give a glimpse into Coco Chanel’s apartment.

Gucci: Gucci’s App has all the standard stuff like product news, and behind the scene’s looks at what goes into making a collection. What I really love about the app is Gucci Beats with loops, beats, drums, and vocals compiled by music producer Mark Ronson.  You can create a beat and then scratch it on a virtual turntable like a DJ and then share it on Facebook. The app features a selection of music from the Gucci Music Channel: a continuous three-hour stream of music. There is also a continuously updated Little Black Book feature where you learn about the best restaurants, clubs, bars and hotels in 33 cities worldwide.

Style.com: Style.com has the most complete coverage of the shows and they are all here. The slideshows are the best on the web and mobile.

New York Times: I get most of my New York Times fashion fix on Sunday. But Thursday Styles is not to be missed either and I get it on it on the Fashion & Style section of this the New York Times App.

StyleCaster: The best thing about the website is the news feature and it is even better on the app. The organization is very clean – and it has excellent fashion and pop culture coverage.
I also love:

My Little Paris: Love the website, love the app. The My Little Paris App covers what’s new and happening in Paris like secret boutiques and  inventive restaurants in the city of light and latest trends. The website has an English version – the app is French seulement. This is a bonus. I need to brush up and what better way to do so than by reading about fashion, restaurants and boutiques, just a few of the reasons I return to this city every chance I get.

French Word of the Day: This app delivers a daily French word with English translation and a sample sentence showing the usage of the new word.

24/7 French LE: This app offers French vocabulary tutorials in a flash card format. What I love most is that it does not require a connection. Perfect for the metro! Find it on itunes

Chanel Le Vernis Limited Edition Blue Satin Nail Colour

Maybe you’re the kind of person who can afford to buy designer everything, all the time, and that’s great!  For the rest of us, high-end fashion purchases may come few and far between, but here’s something you can get that will keep you right in with this season’s haute couture without maxing out your credit card.

Chanel’s Le Vernis Limited Edition Blue Satin Nail Colour $50 each, that’s probably a lot more than you’d normally spend on nail polish, but compared to having to fork over 100 (or more!) times that amount on a Chanel suit, this seems like a ridiculously great bargain by comparison.

Vintage Pick Of the Day: Chanel Obsession

chanelsuit

If you watched The Rachel Zoe Project last night, you heard Rachel say that she wanted to be buried in head-to-toe Chanel. And there’s a reason why she and so many other women are obsessed with the label. Yes, there’s a hefty admission price to belong to this club, but, if you’re a vintage fashionista, you can knock down the entry fee considerably.

While a new Chanel suit will set you back about $5k and a custom-made version can hit the $20k mark, vintage versions are available for far less. Then you can always update a vintage version for a few hundred dollars by taking it to a Chanel boutique and having their seamstress remove the shoulder pads or rework the collar.

But remember: since Chanel boutiques do alterations to ensure each suit fits its original purchaser perfectly, it’s particularly important that you pay attention to listed measurements when purchasing your vintage Chanel suits online.

And yes, they’re available out there in cyberspace. Like today’s VPOD for instance. This Chanel suit from the 1980s features blue and purple tweed with all the fine Chanel details women know and love for a fraction of the cost of new.

It’s a perfect find for a Chanel obsessed vintage fashionista!

Kim Kardashian Chanel black bag

Kim-Kardashian-with-Khloe-w
Kim Kardashian was out shopping in West Hollywood at diva shoe store Diavolina recently and was seen sporting a brand new black Chanel bag. It is a very cool looking retro bag with a snap open top. I remember I had something similar from Prada about 10 years ago. Chanel put a whole new spin on it by making it bigger and of course quilted. I wonder if this bag is available now to the rest of us. Khloe is still sporting her Balenciaga bag with giant hardware. I love that bag it is a classic.

As for Kim’s zipper sandals, what do you think? Pretty cool? She is wearing the Jeffrey Campbell Zipper Sandal in Black with Gold and it is on sale here only. Click to get them on sale now!

Also, I posted 2 other sandal options for you that I thought you would love. Kim Kardashian would probably wear these sandals too. I love the plastic wedges because they are eco friendly and give you height. Click the photos to shop the looks now.

CHANEL No. 5 Essential Bath Oil

fwn05150lg
Many times, it seems that fragrance brands add bath and body products to their main fragrance as just an after thought. There’s no real originality or advance in the packaging, texture, performance or even the delivery method.

But of course, CHANEL didn’t do that with their legendary CHANEL No. 5 bath oil!

CHANEL No.5 Essential Bath Oil is a wonderful, scented oil, that gives the essence of the No. 5 perfume (but should be noted does not smell exactly like it). It’s visually beautiful to look at. It’s a classic CHANEL bottle with a pink Ombre*-like effect, which represents the 3 layer oil suspension of the product inside.

I simply shook the bottle and then added it to bath water. Just heavenly and very moisturizing! I also enjoyed adding a bit to my skin directly after taking a shower. The oil is also good for a few other uses too – I added a few drops of the oil and used it on my hands, elbows, heels and cuticles and just loved it. The lingering scent of a essence of No. 5 is the best part of the treatment! I also loved using it as a very soft, (slightly more cherry/candy-like in fragrance) version of the No. 5 perfume in the day time – so it really is multi-purpose and a little goes a long way — so it’s a great buy too.

If you’re a CHANEL fan and have never tried the classic No.5, or are a No. 5 lover but never used the corresponding bath line, I highly encourage you to splurge a bit on this wonderful oil! – RLB

Impulse Buy of the Week: CHANEL No. 5 Eau Premiere

chanelno5
Like many of you beauty/fragrance lovers, I remember the original CHANEL No. 5 fragrance laid out gingerly on my mother’s fragrance tray on her bedroom dresser. I often recall the scent of her wearing it when she went out at night and on vacations.

Since those early days, I must admit I have never worn CHANEL No. 5 (surprising, I know!). Recently, I went to an event and I received a publication which had a deluxe sample of CHANEL’s modern interpretation of CHANEL No. 5, the Eau Premiere, included with it. As soon as I opened it I knew I was powerless against the power of CHANEL – and then when I applied it I got mentally prepared to part ways with $ to buy the full bottle (which is also chic and stunning as you can see)!

What I love about this interpretation is that this really is an everyday fragrance. It contains notes that one might not at first associate with an every scent – like neroli, roses, jasmine, ylang ylang, amber, vetiver and sandalwood. But it’s much lighter than the original, with a slightly different type of powdery dry down as well. The best way to describe the overall feeling of this scent is — soft. It’s still sexy and sophisticated, but more relaxed than the original. The staying power on me was phenomenal — with a few spritzes in the morning easily lasting all day into the late evening.

For those of you who associate the original No. 5 with a very powdery “older woman” type of smell , the Eau Premier could not be more different. It starts out with a lot of the Jasmin but the vetiver soon takes over and it totally enveloped me! It resulted in a clean, soft, light scent which I felt still made a statement. Then, there is the “powder” effect, but again, it’s still a lot softer and smoother than the original and very pleasant. What remains in the dry down is a nice sweetness and warmth from the amber/sandalwood. I’m simply in love with this.

This is a great CHANEL scent for younger women who want to have the CHANEL No. 5 perfume experience, but in a modern, clean, light way. Of course this will also make a wonderful, decadent Mother’s Day gift for the mother in your life (she will swoon when she opens up the CHANEL box!) Isn’t that going to be worth every penny? :) – RLB
