A lot of times, women who wear larger sizes are steered toward only the simplest garments.  If you’re over a size 14, it seems that all they want you to wear in the winter is solid black or brown, and anything that stands out more than that is relegated to the ranks of handbags and accessories.

Plus-sized retailer Torrid has done a fantastic job of providing much more striking choices for women over size 14, and this black and fuchsia plaid coat is a great example.  This would go well with just about any shape, as the belt helps create definition even if you think that’s a problem for you.  The colors and pattern definitely make a statement, so if you’re ready to be more vivid and bold with your clothing, Torrid is a great place to start shopping.

Leopard Prints Charming

by Carlina Harris

I am so excited! I am going to Seattle tonight to visit a very good friend of mine, and spending the weekend with her at her country home just outside of the big city. Since its going to be raining all weekend, we will try to keep warm by staying indoors (hopefully)– we’ll bake cookies, drink champagne, go shopping, and have all sorts of girlfriend fun times!

Now the only problem here is, I don’t really know what to pack. Last time we hung out in California, I wore a vintage sequin top with shoulder pads–and I think she thought it was a little much! Should I tone it down for the low key life in Washington, or should I bring the seksi to Seattle? Well if you have been reading “Links We Love” for the past two years, I am not really one to tone it down, hence this. So of course, I will bring the fierceness, and by fierce I mean leopard!

Who doesn’t love this gaudy, abrasive print, in its many forms (fur, cashmere, cotton) and shades? Its a trend that always seems to pop up around this time of year–holiday season. It is perfect for all those parties, festivities, and definitely a conversation starter! What’s that, you say this is one trend you can’t do? Sure you can, just take baby steps, not ready for the full on leopard dress (not really appropriate for my weekend festivities), try a sassy leopard flat, or a cashmere scarf, to incorporate some of this trend, and as to not go overkill.

Check out some of my suggestions below for how to tone down all these pieces, what I’m bringing with me on my trip, and what I am saving for SF, NY, Paris!

Seattle bound:
0 Cash wrap Cashmere leopard

Trying to remain true towards my feelings for fashion, yet not to avant-garde for the rest for the state, these were my top three for Seattle. I love how on the leopard pump, the color gradually fades to black, understated elegance at its best. The cashmere wrap is obvi for the plane, and everywhere else, its just too fabulous not to wear! And the cardi is fun, and cashmere, perfect for a chilly day, rain gear not included. From left to right: CARLOS by Carlos Santana Leopard Pump, Zappos, $110; Leopard Cashmere Travel Wrap, Madison LA, $345; Cashmere Leopard Cardigan, Bergorf Goodman, $265

Saving for the SF, NY, Paris:

Now these three are bold leopard, they don’t just say look at me, they demand the attention of the entire building! I had to throw in the Louboutin’s of course, sexy meets of the moment fierceness, and that red sole is so beautiful! The cap sleeved dress is very elegant, and a simple look to do: only accessories, shoes, and red lips required. Now the last item- the oh so fabulous coat, the one that caught my eye (at JC Penny’s none the less) and is now hanging in my already over packed closed, well there really are no words. Except, I got it for under $50 in store, when online it says $84!!!!

Left to right: Christian Louboutin, Saks Fifth Avenue, $1,095; Satin Leopard Print dress, Tadashi Shoji, Neiman Marcus, $290; Leopard coat, Oxford & Regent, JC Penny, $83.99

Au revoir mon cheri!

Echo Houndstooth Textured Coat from Bird

ECHcoat1
Admittedly, I’m all about the hi-tech performance wear for winter coat warmth. But then along comes a houndstooth charmer, like this one by Echo, which dashes all those ideals to smithereens! It’s got vintage appeal, with the piping details and cropped sleeves, but full-on modern style paired with skinny jeans and knee high boots. Maybe layered over a nice Patagonia fleece shell, that could definitely work for warmth….. hmmmm… It’s $240.00 from Bird.

Vintage Pick Of the Week: Catch a Cashin

IMG_2140

Bonnie Cashin once said: “All I want is to speak simply in my designing; I don’t want gilt and glamour.” And this pioneer of American sportswear design knew what she was talking about. She designed for smart, active, independent women who appreciated her coordinated pieces. The same sensibility she applied to the design of women’s armed forces uniforms in World War II was applied to her signature ponchos, capes and coats.

Today’s VPOW (Vintage Pick-of-the-Week) features one of her notable designs. This gorgeous all-weather coat features Cashin’s hallmark leather trim along with two super-deep front pockets, a pile lining, snap closures, and eye-catching houndstooth print.

It’s a fine Cashin catch for a vintage fashionista! Available at Zuburbia.com.

Bastille Day Inspired Military Jackets

bastilledayjackets

Today we are inspired by the embellished military coats of the French Garde Républicaine (Republican Guard) as they parade down the Champs-Élysées in celebration of Bastille Day. This year’s festivities include tributes 450 Indian soldiers as guest of honor in the parade, fireworks celebrating 120th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower and the traditional Firemen’s balls.

Military inspired coats, capes and sweaters join forces this fall with over-sized decorative buttons, frog embellishments, chain swags, lapel button detailing, and nipped waist silhouettes. Perfect to wear now and into fall is the short sleeved 3. 1 Philip Lim cardigan. The luxe yet pricey Balmain cape is gorgeous makes us yearn for cooler fall days. All that is missing is a red feather plumed shako helmet and gorgerous tall black leather riding boots.

Featured from top right clockwise:

  • Balmain Tweed military cape $4,645 at Net-a-Porter
  • 3.1 Phillip Lim Embellished wool-blend cardigan $450 at Net-a-Porter
  • Anna Sui Military wool-blend cardigan $430 at Net-a-Porter
  • McQ Gabardine Military Jacket, $550 at Neiman Marcus
  • Royal Underground Military Jacket, $395.00 at NeimanMarcus.com
