Vintage Pick of the Day: Autumn Splendor

Fall is quite a traumatic time for trees. Nights are lengthening and temperatures are dropping and this leads to a decrease in chlorophyll production. Eventually the chlorophyll production drops to zero and that’s when the beautiful colors from the carotenoids and anthocyanins in the leaves can blaze through in all their fall glory. These beautiful colors were in the leaves all along–they were just hidden from view.

So I see this time of year as a reminder from Mother Nature to take a long hard look at everything from our closets to our lives and determine what magnificence is lurking beneath the surface. It might be as simple as a lovely little frock or as important as a long-lost hobby or talent that is begging to come back into your life.

Of course, a fashionista wants to look good even while conducting this yearly closet inspection and engaging in this inner reflection, so take a look at today’s VPOD. It’s a fabulous little 1960s chiffon mini-dress in an abstract swirl of fall’s finest shades that is just begging for a rockin’ pair of boots and leggings.

And it’s a splendid autumn find for a vintage fashionista.

Bold Color-blocked Dresses

You don’t need an overwhelming show of color in an outfit to make it a standout design, you just need the right colors strategically placed. That’s why I love color-blocked dresses – they build the colors right in! Black is the NEW black for fall. So pairing black with a pop of  a bold color such as fuschia or red on a color-blocked dress looks fresh right now in the form of a sundress or sleeveless summer frock.

Twist Front Cap Sleeve Dress

We all have a little black dress we rely on as a standby, but usually it’s one we’ve had forever, and it may be time to revisit the idea and pick up a more updated look. I really love this twist-front cap sleeve dress, for example – it’s certainly sultry enough, with just a hint of a old Hollywood retro feel, and the clever cut will forgive a lot if you’re concerned about how your figure will look in a slinky black number. Or if you’re looking for a splash of color, opt for this turquoise or purple – or get all three! You can’t go wrong with this classic style!

Vintage Pick of the Day: The Little Brown Dress

little brown dress

In an interview with CNN last year, John Mason, founder of the Nature Conservation Research Council predicted that in 20 years, “chocolate will be like caviar” and “it will become so expensive and rare that the average Joe just won’t be able to afford it.” What?! Why?! Well, since the farming methods aren’t sustainable, yields are declining on cocoa plantations all across West Africa where two-thirds of the world’s supply is grown.

So in decades to come, you may need to get your chocolate fix in other ways, like with today’s VPOD. After all, this chocolate brown vintage dress by Ceil Chapman is yummy enough to indulge any vintage fashionista’s sweet tooth.

Done in luxurious jersey with a satin ruffled hem, this gem has all the draping, tucking and pleating that Ceil Chapman fans crave and all the cachet of a little black dress…with a twist.

It’s a yummy chocolate find for a vintage fashionista!

Shawl Collar Evening Dress from Chic Star

I’m always looking for that one perfect evening dress for autumn, something that isn’t as casual as a summer sundress, but isn’t a warm winter dress, either.  I’ve been picking up a lot from the recent trends toward a more Asian inspired look for clothing, and just when I thought I would give up, I hit the jackpot. This shawl jacquard dress from ChicStar is pretty much everything I’ve been looking for in an autumn dress.

I love the rich red (though it comes in black as well, if you prefer), the shawl collar plays into this season’s trend for wide shoulders, and the look is that perfect compromise between summer and fall.  I think with black peep toe pumps, this could be a real winner for me.  The empire waist makes it a more comfortable fit, as well, and I love the tailored vintage feel as well.

Forever 21 Pick of the Day: Knotted Back Knit Dress, $18.90

knotteddress2
Tops and dresses with cut out knit or lace interwoven back detailing have been all over the runways and available in stores this season. This Knotted Back Knit Dress, $18.90 captures not only the knit trend, but a low waistband with adjustable tie and peep-hole front as well. Get it in black or teal and rock it as either a classic little black dress or daring bright number.  Paired with a slouchy hobo bag and gladiator studded sandals, you’ll look like you stepped right off the runway!

Vintage Post Of the Day: Devour Devore

Devore, from the French devorer which means “to devour,” is a process of chemically destroying a fabric with an agent that takes away the plant fibers made of cellulose while leaving the other fibers intact. You’ve probably seen it most frequently on velvet where the velvet pile has been eaten away by chemicals and only parts of the silk backing remain.

And while you crafty types can try this at home with products available at craft stores, I’m not a gal who likes to play with chemicals. I’d much prefer to just acquire a fine example of devore like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1920s dress is a lovely example of this technique. The devore, silk chiffon, low slung waist and diamante belt create a style tour de force.

It’s a head-turning find for a vintage fashionista!

Forever 21 Pick of the Day: Glam Rock Party Dress, $23

glamrockpartydress
I really don’t like spending a lot on “dressy dresses” due to the infrequency of wear, but on the other hand, don’t want to spend $20 on a dress, and look like I spent $20 on a dress either.  Hence, the Glam Rock Party Dress, $22.80 steps up to the plate. It’s dressy, it’s edgy, it’s inexpensive-what more do you want? I’d pair it with some over-sized stud earrings, and patent leather sky-high pumps.
