You don’t need an overwhelming show of color in an outfit to make it a standout design, you just need the right colors strategically placed. That’s why I love color-blocked dresses – they build the colors right in! Black is the NEW black for fall. So pairing black with a pop of  a bold color such as fuschia or red on a color-blocked dress looks fresh right now in the form of a sundress or sleeveless summer frock.

We all have a little black dress we rely on as a standby, but usually it’s one we’ve had forever, and it may be time to revisit the idea and pick up a more updated look. I really love this twist-front cap sleeve dress, for example – it’s certainly sultry enough, with just a hint of a old Hollywood retro feel, and the clever cut will forgive a lot if you’re concerned about how your figure will look in a slinky black number. Or if you’re looking for a splash of color, opt for this turquoise or purple – or get all three! You can’t go wrong with this classic style!

In an interview with CNN last year, John Mason, founder of the Nature Conservation Research Council predicted that in 20 years, “chocolate will be like caviar” and “it will become so expensive and rare that the average Joe just won’t be able to afford it.” What?! Why?! Well, since the farming methods aren’t sustainable, yields are declining on cocoa plantations all across West Africa where two-thirds of the world’s supply is grown.

Devore, from the French devorer which means “to devour,” is a process of chemically destroying a fabric with an agent that takes away the plant fibers made of cellulose while leaving the other fibers intact. You’ve probably seen it most frequently on velvet where the velvet pile has been eaten away by chemicals and only parts of the silk backing remain.

And while you crafty types can try this at home with products available at craft stores, I’m not a gal who likes to play with chemicals. I’d much prefer to just acquire a fine example of devore like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1920s dress is a lovely example of this technique. The devore, silk chiffon, low slung waist and diamante belt create a style tour de force.
