3 Ways to Wear Glitter Eyeliner This New Year’s Eve (or Whenever)!

  • posted December 26th, 2012

This time of year, glitter, rhinestones, and sequins reign supreme! But how do you pull off the glitzy look without looking like a total beauty novice? Break out the glitter liner, because there are several ways to rock sparkle this season – all of which can be done without getting glitter on the rest of your face!

Personally, I’m a big fan of liquid glitter liners (as opposed to sparkly pencil liners), because they’re super concentrated with glitter and just as easy to apply. Plus, since it’s sticky with a clear base, it practically comes with its own adhesive – simply dab on over eyeshadow, or use your finger to pat on your lid to add some extra glitz to your favorite smoky eye look, without getting glitter all over your cheeks.

If you want to edge things up a bit, go for a pop of glitter on the lower lash line only. Play it safe with your typical black liner on the top lid, then line the bottom lid with a colorful glittery liner in emerald, blue, or purple. For maximum impact, use a matching shadow or liner underneath the liner to make the glitter really stand out. This is my favorite way to wear glitter liner, as it’s unexpected and dramatic without overpowering or over-glitzing your whole look – plus, it gives me an excuse to finally dabble with all the crazy, unconventional shadow and liner shades I’ve collected over the years!

Thirdly, you can skip the liquid liner altogether and go with a . If you still haven’t mastered the steady-handedness required to apply the perfect cat-eye, opt for these glitter stick-on versions by Sephora! Sure, they may also require some practice to apply seamlessly, but you’re left with budge-free, symmetrical glittery wings all night!

The Best of Eye Primers

[Image by Julia DiNardo; backstage at the Betsey Johnson Spring 2013 show]

Of course you have your eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara,  application routine down pat but what about adding an eye primer into the mix? Like any kind of primer, eyelid-specific primer is used as a base layer for your eyeshadow to make sure it stays put and looks fresh all day long. Similar to concealer most brands offer a selection of hues that you can select for the eyelid primer  based on a match for your skin type, while others have an all-encompassing shade that works well on a variety of skin types and shades.. The real difficulty comes down to finding one that works for you, at a price point you’re willing to do. Dont worry, we are here to help! Selected below are top picks that will give you the ultimate bang for your buck.

e.l.f. (eyeslipsface) is a good, inexpensive option that  you will love to keep in your beauty armada.  The e.l.f. Essential Eyelid Primer costs just $1, and comes in four shade options; several of them have some shimmer to them, hence clear is our absolute, versatile, favorite.  The e.l.f. Mineral Eyeshadow Primer$3, is 100% mineral based with no parabens,  preservatives, or chemical dyes, available in two shades (sheer or blush), and is an important tool to keep mineral eyeshadow, which is known to quickly fade, in place all day long.

NARS Cosmetics is a favorite over here at FPD, so the brand’s Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base is constantly in-hand! It  has a slightly thicker, but still lightweight, translucent consistency that is perfect of keeping eyeshadow from creaseing and smudging. Plus, the product uses polymer and mineral power to cling to color and reduce blemishes. At $24 it is a bit more of an investment, but trust us; it’s worth it for a long-lasting look.

bareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer, $18, not only helps preserve your eye makeup, but also gives your eyes a little highlighting action. You can choose between a gold or pearl sheen to revamp your color, whether you choose to wear it with or without eyeshadow. The product is, of course, made with 100% bare minerals and vitamins, so it is great for sensitive skin too.

LORAC Behind The Scenes Eye Primer, $21, takes a slightly different approach; first, it is packaged in a slanted tube rather than a footed wand, so you apply it directly to the lid for a clean and controlled application. It is also made without oils, fragrances, dyes, and parabens, meaning it is absolutely ideal for those with skin issues.

Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube$20, produces a primer that comes in a variety of colors from shimmery gold and sheer nude to matte tawny. Depending on your style and outing, Urban Decay is sure to have a primer to match. The product is also meant to be multipurpose, used as a brow bone or inner eye highlighter.

Gorgeous Gold Eyeliner Inspired By The Hunger Games!

  • posted April 1st, 2012

Lenny Kravitz may have done a marvelous job at pulling off a surprisingly masculine take on gold liner for his role as District 12’s stylist Cinna in The Hunger Games, but all I could think about during his scenes is how I couldn’t wait to try the trend on my own lids! When used in moderation – in this case, a simple yet bold line on the top lid – gold eye makeup can look sleek and sophisticated and gorgeously fresh for spring. Unlike a full-on metallic smoky eye (which is probably best saved for New Year’s Eve or other winter-festive soirees), a downplayed take on gold-accented liner provides a more subtle, light-reflective gleam that brings out your eyes and makes lashes pop. Keep the rest of your makeup minimal – we’re going for statement-making simplicity here – and finish off with a few healthy coats of your favorite mascara for a look that’s fresh yet fierce! After all, Cinna would never steer us wrong, would he?

Eye Spy Kat Von D’s Triple Threat Tattoo Liners!

I don’t have anything against Kat Von D or her beauty line, it’s just that Sephora is the makeup mothership for so many brands that I rarely give myself a chance to try something new and unfamiliar, unless it’s something that has a ton of beauty buzz surrounding it, or a certain product just happens to really catch my eye. Enter the Triple Threat Tattoo Liner trio – a handy set of three liquid liners that each boast a different brush tip to suit whatever style you happen to adopt that day – whether you’re going for that smudgy rocker-chick look or are still trying to achieve that perfect cat-eye. As someone who often double-fists with different makeup products just to complete one look (I often use one liner for my top lid, another one for my bottom lid, and another one altogether for my waterline), I can totally appreciate the collaborative effort of different brush tips to get the perfect look or to help achieve totally different looks to suit your mood!

Electric Blue Eyeliner Inspired By Anna Sui Fall 2012 RTW!

For Anna Sui’s Fall 2012 RTW runway show, makeup artist Pat McGrath needed to make sure that the models’ makeup stood a chance at standing out against the wardrobe’s elaborate fabrics without completely stealing the spotlight. Her key to success was a technicolor version of a dramatic cat-eye, using eye-popping electric blue for a modernized 60s vibe. If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to try out electric pops of color in your own makeup, but have been too chicken thus far, now’s your chance! For someone who’s just starting to play with untraditional shades, try NYX Slim Eye Pencil in electric blue for maximum control and a more muted take on the shade. If you’re already plenty skilled with liquid liner, I recommend Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liner in Radium for high color pay-off that won’t stray. Stila Smudge Pot is a personal favorite of mine when it comes to cream eyeliner – lucky us, it also comes in electric blue! And don’t forget the possibility of using eye shadow as liner; with a wet liner brush, MAC’s shadow in Blue Candy would make the perfect electric pop!

Beauty Find – Laura Geller Inkwell Eyeliner Duo

There’s nothing like starting another year with a innovative beauty product that I love!

This year it’s Laura Geller’s Inkwell Waterproof Gel Liner Duo. The duo includes a rich black and a deep purple that really do what they say – and couldn’t be easier to apply.

The packaging is quite nice and very unique – you simply pull the brush on the top out and flip it upside down. Next, click it back into the inkwell cap and then you have a longer application brush that is very easy to hold.

With this brush I was able to do the traditional “Cat eye” and make a thicker line that flicked upwards, as well as the new trend, the “Kitten eye” which is a shorter, slightly thinner line on the top lash line, angled a little higher. Both of these looked great in both the black and purple versions. It’s also very easy to create a standard thin line on the top and bottom lashes for a very natural yet, eye opening effect.

The gel liners themselves were very impressive – creamy, lightweight and glided on effortlessly. After applying, it’s best to wait 3 minutes for it to set before adding shadows, etc. The liners are truly waterproof as well, but I was able easily remove it with makeup remover/cleanser at the end of the day. - RLB

Get Dazzling Eyes This Season With Tinsel-Colored Liner

  • posted December 9th, 2011
  • Beauty

Holiday party season is officially here, and if you’re opting to go the subtle route fashion-wise by avoiding ultra-sparkly cocktail dresses and glitter heels at all costs, there’s still plenty of ways to add some celebratory glitz to your seasonal party look! Instead, try focusing the festiveness on your makeup. Metallic silver liner adds just the slightest dash of holiday vixen appeal that makes a surprisingly gorgeous impact. It’s like tinsel for your eyes… which is way less painful than it sounds! Try not to go too 90s-fabulous with the trend (that whole frosty lid look might make you look dated), and instead stick to just the corners of your eye and the inner rim. Similar to how white pencil makes peepers appear wider and brighter, silver liner will make eyes sparkle with a sexy metallic sheen. Also, make sure you pick an easy-glide, extra-bright chrome silver – darker gunmetal shades just won’t have the same tinselly effect!

Brighten Eyes With Make Up For Ever’s Humidity-Proof Aqua Liner

This season, it’s all about the eyes, and even the most color-shy girls are testing the waters by incorporating bitty bursts of color in their summer makeup look, including liquid eyeliners in all shades of the rainbow! However, even though the look is very “in,” experimenting with bold, statement-making shades still takes some guts, and the last thing you want is for the product to be smudged beneath your eyes, or worse — running down your cheeks! Talk about a beauty risk gone terribly wrong! Well, thanks to Make Up For Ever’s waterproof Aqua Liner, you can rock brightly-lined eyes without worrying about summer’s unsightly beauty woes. Richly pigmented (with your choice of 16 different shades!), and infused with polymers, this liquid liner aims to reach the highest standard of budge, smudge, and splash-proof. Plus, makeup klutzes needn’t worry; with its felt-tip applicator, it’s even easier to apply than most clumsy liquid liners — not like there’s a need for frequent on-the-go touch-ups!

Stila Sparkle Liquid Eye Liner

Sexy cat’s eye liner is the perfect complement to spring’s vintage inspired styles.  Whether you are a liquid eyeliner connaisseur or a complete novice, Stila’s sparkle waterproof liquid eyeliner will revolutionize your beauty look.   The ultra thin felt tip allows for ultimate control, even for beginners.  Even though I’ve been wearing liquid eyeliner for years, I was still impressed with ease and precision of this product.  I drew the perfect swoop on my first try, no going back and filling in gaps required.  The liner looked fresh all day, with no running or smudging.  I’m confident that this summer, when I’m running all over town in the blistering heat, at least I won’t have to worry about my eyeliner staying on.  However, it’s the glitter formula that sets this product apart from the competition. The subtle sparkle really makes eyes pop.
