Bug Out With “Insect Eyes” Inspired by Roberto Cavalli!

  • posted March 1st, 2012
  • Beauty

It’s no secret that statement-making eyes have been quite the runway staple for many designer collections these days – after all, what better way to make your models really stand out without distracting from the garments themselves? Backstage at Roberto Cavalli, things were getting a little extra high-fashion when it came to playing up the eye makeup, as Pat McGrath used a custom blend of peacock and insect-inspired shades like jade, purple, and gold for an innovative take on the smoky eye. Believe it or not, you can get the bug-eyed look yourself (and I mean that in a fabulous way, of course) by accenting your regular smoky shadow with some key animal-inspired colors. First, be sure to have a great yellow-gold shadow to serve as a highlighter for the inner corners of your eyes (and your brow bone, too, if you’re feeling adventurous), then use a bold purple or plum shade in your outer corners. Top off with a shimmery forest green or deep teal in the center of your eye, so you’re left with a cool ombre effect. Don’t forget to blend, and tie it all together with a healthy dose of black liner, and you’ve got yourself an innovative night-out smoky look that’s definitely not for the color-shy! Clinique Lid Smoothie: Cooling Cream Shadow With Just a Dash of Sparkle

  • posted December 31st, 2011
  • Beauty

I’m not afraid to admit that cooling makeup products always kind of freaked me out. It’s one thing to have skin care products that create a cooling sensation (after all, I could always hastily wipe it off when the tingling got a little too weird for me), but makeup that feels icy-cool? Sure, sounds refreshing in theory… but also a little unnecessary, and unwanted for people with sensitive eyes like me. However, Clinique Lid Smoothie is starting to win me over. Okay, I actually think I’m in love! It’s one of the few cream shadows I’ve tried that actually really does stay put like it claims. It’s soft and shimmery, blends easily and  and feels totally lightweight but not greasy, and has impressive color pay-off that you don’t often get from such a weightless formula that feels this weightless. The cooling sensation is practically nonexistent, but still feels refreshing upon application. And the added bonus? It works great as a primer, too, so you can layer with other shades and have a gorgeous shimmery winter look, crease-free!

Pretty Palette Alert! Sephora Collection’s ‘In The Nude’ Moonshadow Baked Palette

If you spent the past year or so putting your name on several waitlists for Urban Decay’s Naked Palette, eventually gave up, and since then haven’t been able to step into a Sephora without feeling defeated (FYI, most places have them by now!), I may just have an equally gorgeous set of neutrals that’s a bit easier to get your hands on! Sephora Collection’s modestly-priced Moonshadow Baked Palette incorporates a series of similarly stellar neutrals that are the perfect exemplifier of the fact that naked doesn’t equal boring (next to actual nudity, of course). From shimmery taupes and pearlescent tawny hues to glowing bronzes and even a festive pop of frosty pink, the new ‘In The Nude’ Moonshadow palette lets you experienced with the mothership’s own brand of bold baked shadows without stocking up on several separate shades. It makes the perfect gift for gals who love makeup but like to play it safe color-wise, or a great addition for any avid palette collector! After all, who doesn’t love a good value set?

Introducing Bare Escentuals’ First-Ever Solid Mineral Shadows!

As much as I adore the color payoff and brilliant shimmer of the bareMinerals eyeshadow pots, I’d be lying if I said I actually use them on a regular basis. Sure, I own a couple, and when I have some extra time on my hands while I’m getting ready and don’t mind the extra trouble of dealing with the messiness of a loose pigment, the results never disappoint. But what can I say? On most occasions I’m lazy, and as a bit of a clean freak, the stray pigment that inevitably ends up all over my cheeks kind of stresses me out during my early morning primping routine. And although I’d never think to actually complain, the makeup mavens over at Bare Escentuals have somehow managed to answer my silent prayers anyway! Welcome the brand-new solid eyeshadow palettes, the bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow, which boast the same color pay-off and shimmer as the original loose pigments, but in an easier-to-apply, more travel-friendly package and formula. Available in both shadow duos and shadow quads, each palette comes with coordinating shadows that look gorgeous and blend together effortlessly. I don’t know about my fellow beauty addicts, but I can’t wait to stock up on all those shades I previously avoided out of fear of the non-solid!

Channel Your Inner Bathing Beauty With Stila’s Collectible Beach Palettes!

While Stila might not normally be my go-to makeup line of choice for all my daily beauty routine must-haves, the brand certainly takes the cake when it comes to adorably festive themed palettes — and at a serious bargain, mind you! The latest themed all-inclusive slim sets take inspiration from our favorite summer hotspot — the beach! With a total of four different limited-edition palettes, each including shades modeled after the world’s most gorgeous beachy hangouts, you can collect them all or choose the one you’d most rather be spending your time! …Or of course, just be predictable and base your decision on the shades appeal to you most (kidding!). You can look out for the second half of the four-piece collection later this summer, but for now be sure to check out the first two: Stunning in Sayulita and Haute in The Hamptons! Both contain four coordinating shadows, one cheek color, and one highlighter/bronzer, but differ in color scheme. Sayulita appeals to our inner surfer girl with its taupes and bronzes, while the Hamptons channels a more subtle, “sip wine and look pretty at the hottest cocktail party” look. Can’t decide? For only $14 each, why bother choosing just one?

Get Eyes To Kill with Giorgio Armani Intense New Shadow Pots

I’m a sucker for sparkly shadows, especially those that look just as color-rich and shimmering on my lid as they do in the package! Giorgio Armani Beauty’s new marbleized shadow pots, Eyes To Kill Intense, boasts a smudge-free formula that’s somewhere in between a powder and a cream, which gives it that concentrated wet, smokey look that won’t crease, slide off, or appear faded while blending. If you’re not intrigued by the captivating color combos alone — Blast of Blue (cobalt and gold), Lust Red (black and cranberry), and Khaki Pulse (grey and copper) are some of my favorite eye-catching marbled duos — then you at least have to be somewhat intrigued by its claim to twenty four hour color wear! I’m a big fan of primers and sealers — and I still see my share of flakes and creases — so I’m fascinated to know if these shadows wear as long and as rich as they boast. At $32 a pot, they’re definitely not a steal, but with its revolutionary Color-Fil stay-put technology and amazing color options, it’s worth a try, if I can manage to choose just one!

Sephora Collection’s Colorista Custom Makeup Palette

Come Christmas time, Sephora Collection’s all-inclusive annual Blockbuster Palette — which includes everything from lipsticks and liners to blushes and shadows in every shade of the rainbow — is my #1 go-to gift for all the makeup collectors on my list! But why should an avid beauty buyer have to wait till the busiest shopping season of the year for a new bargain-beating Blockbuster palette (especially when my 2010 palette’s tiny eyeshadow pans are past the point of just scraping the metal at the bottom)? Luckily the wish-granters at the makeup mothership itself, Sephora, don’t want to keep us hanging, and have rolled out a summer edition of their famous Blockbuster! The Colorista Custom Makeup Palette isn’t just season-festive with loads of fun brights — it’s customizable with pop-out metal pans and magnetic backing so you can switch out the mini palettes and create your own portable compact. Whether you want only certain shades for on-the-go touch-ups or insist on hauling the entire thing with you on your summer vacay, the Colorista palette has you completely covered for only $36 (a $155 value)!

Smog Check! Smolder With Smoky Gray-Green Shadow

  • posted May 22nd, 2011
  • Beauty

Smog may be an ugly downfall of the Los Angeles area, but it also happens to be a gorgeous makeup trend that’s taking the world of eyeshadow by storm! Foggy-day-inspired gray-green is a multi-flattering shade that puts an earthy spin on the classic charcoal smoky eye. It’s casual and soft enough for day with just the right amount of drama, but can be amped up for night with a touch of black shadow smudged in the outer corners or a little extra black liner. If green shadow isn’t typically your thing — no problem! These silvery olive hues are shades that even color-shy girls can get on-board with, since it has just the slightest hint of khaki/olive sheen to bring out the gold flecks in brown, hazel, or green eyes. For those wanting to experiment with more adventurous shades, gray-green can serve as an easy stepping stone into bolder colorful shadows that are also in this summer!

Are You Ready To Take Flight with MAC’s Big Bounce Eyeshadows?

I wouldn’t exactly call myself MAC obsessed – at least, not any more obsessed than I am with makeup and beauty products in general — but I’ll admit it, I get extremely curious every time the brand comes out with something new. I’m not talking new shades or limited edition glittery formulas or flower-imprinted shadows — I’m talking new products altogether — which is why I’m so intrigued by the upcoming Flighty collection, which features the new Big Bounce eyeshadows. I mean, after exhausting pretty much every eye shadow shade they’ve come out with — pressed powder, cream, and paint (okay, maybe I am a bit obsessed) — I’m stoked to try this new wet mousse formula. Considering MAC is known for being on the heavy side (borderline stage makeup, in fact), I’m curious to see how they’ll fare with a formula that’s intentionally light and airy, but hopefully with a comparable color pay-off! With so many colors to choose from (16 all from one collection!), I look forward to playing with both the neutrals and bolder shades alike (even if it’s just doing my own swatch session at the beauty counters come May!). Do you think MAC can hold their own when it comes to lightweight sheer shades?
