Blazers Go Equestrian-Chic With This Season’s Riding Jackets

  • posted February 1st, 2012
  • Fashion

Much like last year’s military trend expanded to encompass nearly all aspects of the fashion world, from jackets to bags and beyond (much like the previous year’s moto-inspired fad), this season equestrian styles are taking over! After all, riding boots are hard to ignore these days (not like you’d ever want to ignore them), but they’re not the only equestrian-chic trend that’s all the rage these days! Riding jackets are a chic yet almost rugged way to update your classic buttoned-up blazer. It’s preppy without looking too stuffy, and sophisticated while still giving off a slightly laidback vibe. A boyish fit like this Rachel Roy ‘Flounce’ Riding Jacket puts a whole new spin on your girlish wardrobe pieces, while this tweed Gibson Riding Jacket adds some contrasting texture to balance the season’s silky-sheer blouses. And don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns – J. Crew’s Hacking Jacket incorporates playful checks in a neutral color palette that still won’t clash with bold stripes or fall-festive colorblocking!

Get Gorgeous in Grassy Hues for Fall

  • posted November 9th, 2011

The fall and winter environment is far from the grassiest of green but something on the fashion radar tells me that grassy, green hues, alongside the evergreen notes of Christmas, are going to be making themselves a huge addition to parties and galas this holiday season. Celebrities and starlets have already been shot on the red carpet in an array of grassy hues, from dill to army, found on multiple parts of their outfits. Shoes, bags, and dresses, green hues are going to be the notice me, red carpet color to rock for the cameras on the flashiest nights out. Green hasn’t always been the front runner color choice of evening wear but maybe these amazing green finds will give you the hint that maybe the grass really is greener on the otherside: Burberry Prossum Heavyweight Stretch Military Jacket, ASOS Pepper Mary Jane Platform, Diane Von Furstenberg Jade Green Clutch, and the Majolie Green Aventurine Pendant Necklace.

These Patent Platform Wedges Have Us Feeling Daytime Disco Fever!

The bad news is: the summer of sexy sky-high wedge sandals is officially over as we embrace chilly fall. The good news is: you don’t have to give up your favorite trend just because the weather forecast (and everything you know about seasonal fashion fare) says so! Clunky, chunky, funky wedges are getting a fall update with dark tones, closed toes, and even structural heels that you can rock with your favorite fall trousers, cords, or (if you’re daring) even tights!  For example, these Robert Clergerie “Olympy” sandals from Barneys have trendy color-blocking and criss-crossing straps for a bad-ass fall look. These Sergio Zelcer “Cata” Wedge Sandals are extra high (and extra fierce!) with a shiny patent finish and cool cut-out details for plenty of visual interest. And don’t forget these T-Strap “Maggie” Sandals with a staircase-inspired structural heel, which puts a new spin on the super-high wedge!

Your Inner Bad Girl Will Love These Spiky Pumps!

The fashion world seems to never tire from updating the classic pump. From chunky platform soles and architectural heels to leather, suede, and sequins in every shade of the rainbow, it’s basically impossible to get sick of a style that’s constantly getting revamped! And while you may already have a substantial collection of standard go-tos like black and nude, plus a couple fun shades and sparkly pairs to switch things up, this season’s pumps are ready to embrace the rough and rugged in the form of spike embellishments! Sure, we’ve already seen our share of studs and moto-inspired shoes… but spikes are a whole new ballgame. Lady GaGa would certainly approve, but do you have the guts to rock spike-studded pumps? I love the way the girly platform heel and the bad-gal inspired spikes provide the ultimate sexy contrast, but they’re certainly not for the demure dresser, or the faint of heart! What do you think – super-chic, or too extreme?

Three Luxe Takes on the Letterman Jacket!

It’s high school Homecoming season, and if you’ve been too busy stalking your former classmates on Facebook to pay attention to the newest trends, you may be surprised at what’s hot for the winter season ahead! Letterman jackets, also known as varsity jackets, are making a big comeback with chic designer versions that put an upscale spin on the classic oversized style. Even if you’re long past your school days – no matter how hard you try convincing others that it wasn’t that long ago – you can still rock this classmate-inspired trend, and without resurrecting bad memories of your sophomore year yearbook photo, for that matter! Relive your days as head of the class with the varsity quarterback’s jacket draped around your shoulders… or show exactly how hot you would have looked rockin’ the basketball star’s jacket, if he had been smart enough to give you a second look! Whether warm and woolly or leather-paneled and sleek, you’re bound to find a version you love that’s too cool for school!

Would You Rock a Trendy Take on the Themed Sweater from Wildfox Couture?

Looking back on your childhood and considering how many wrapped birthday presents you shook and rattled by your ear, silently praying that the gift from your grandmother wasn’t yet another hideous homemade sweater with a mortifyingly cheesy print emblazoned right on the front, it’s hard to imagine that they’re coming into style. Yes, you read that correctly – chunky knit sweaters with animals and symbols and icons are about to have quite a moment during this upcoming fall and winter season… and no, “Ugly Christmas Sweater” parties don’t count! Take Wildfox Couture’s latest creations, for example: big red heart motifs, deer faces edged up with slashed sleeves, and crocheted sweater-scarf-hoodie hybrids to boot — this Fall 2011 collection is all about channeling everything you always hated about horrific knitwear and embarrassing prints. Sure, these pieces are quirky and they’re most certainly cozy… but the real question is: are they chic? Any character from Pretty Little Liars would provide me with a resounding “OMG yes!” but we’re curious about the real stylistas. What say you – would you rock a reinvented version of your grandma’s crochet wardrobe?

Fly Into Fall With Bird-Printed Pieces!

Just because the leaves are dying, the flowers have wilted, and the birds are migrating out of town in preparation for winter, it doesn’t mean your favorite pretty prints have to go into hibernation. Lively prints like florals and birds may typically have an automatic springy feel by default, but you might be surprised at how the latest fall trends have a knack for so seamlessly translating your favorite warm-weather patterns for a stylish summer-to-fall transition. The key to pulling off cheery bird prints when the weather is more on the dreary side is to keep up with fall’s tell-tale silhouettes and trends. If you’ve been on the lookout for the perfect sheer blouse, this Equipment Long Sleeve Button Top incorporates a subtle seagull print that doesn’t look a bit out of season, while the 70′s-inspired long-sleeve dress gets a festive modern update with a crimson bird print. And if you were gutsy enough to pull off printed shorts in the summer, try these bird-printed pants for a cool alternative to solid trousers!

Fall Must-Have: An Olive Green Leather Jacket

Aside from your favorite cozy peacoat, warm puffer jacket, and trim-and-tailored blazers, everyone needs a leather jacket (or faux leather one!) to carry them through the fall season! And nowadays, as the leather look has expanded from everything to sporty bombers and moto styles to even military jackets and blazers, leather jackets are no longer best reserved for just achieving the biker look. And what better way to update your classic black leather jacket than with a fresh, fall-friendly shade like olive green? While a green leather jacket sounds like a bit of a fashion risk, a toned-down neutral like olive still goes with nearly everything and really pops with fall’s favorite jewel tones, and adds a dose of seasonal color to otherwise monochromatic autumn ensembles. Whether you’re looking for something moto-inspired, military chic, or a casual bomber style for cozy fall layering, olive green is a cool way to stay warm in leather this season!

Go To Great Lengths With a Long-Sleeved Maxi Dress For Fall!

Long, flowing maxi dresses of all styles, shades, and patterns have been this summer’s hottest ticket — paired with a cool fedora or just some stacked bangles for a little extra glitz — but who says this season’s favorite style has to go into hibernation come fall? For all the fashionistas who aren’t ready to part with this easy-to-wear, effortlessly gorgeous (not to mention extremely comfortable!) style, fear not — the fashion gods have answered your prayers and come up with ways to transition the trend from summer to fall (and beyond)! Long-sleeve maxi dresses still keep that breezy, romantic feel with a glamorously long hemline, but the look gets a weather-appropriate update with long sleeves to match! If it sounds like way too much material for your body to handle (after all, it is a lot of dress), don’t worry — you can break it up and add balance and shape with a belt, or even a cropped blazer to give it a streamlined look. Whether you’re digging this season’s groovy 70s-inspired looks or just like to keep things girly yet sophisticated, you’re bound to find the perfect new fall-friendly maxi dress!

Your Fall Wardrobe Gets the Printed Treatment With a Festive Blazer

  • posted September 19th, 2011

Among the many, many pieces that make up my fall wardrobe (not bragging – I’m just a hoarder), I have to say that my most frequently worn pieces are definitely my blazers. Whether cropped and fitted or more relaxed and boyfriend-inspired, they somehow manage to give no matter what I’m wearing underneath (even a casual tee!) a suddenly more streamlined, sophisticated appearance. But just because they’re my go-to “I-need-to-look-more-serious” closet item, doesn’t mean they need to boring, or even solid for that matter! This season’s hottest blazers are getting the printed treatment to add pizzazz to this bleak fall! Mix patterns if you’re feeling gutsy by pairing a floral blazer (Forever 21 Floral Chiffon Blazer) over a simple striped sweater, or add a little Mad Men vibe with subtly quirky polka dots (ASOS Spot Print Chiffon Blazer). Personally I’m loving this serpent-print ‘Jess’ Blazer by Of Two Minds, which is on the looser side, but you can belt it for a more figure-flattering, sexy look!
