I’ve written before about the resurgence of tribal prints and they’re showing up everywhere! My favorite way to take advantage of this look is by throwing on a funky tunic, inspired by all kinds of different exotic prints and patterns. Black and white looks are big, but if you want a little more color, you’ll be happy to find a vast selection that seems to conjure up the African plains or traditional tribal garb.

I’m not sure if this is a good sign or bad sign but because of the proliferation of these prints, you can find them for pretty inexpensively and the below options are from Forever 21 and all under $25. I love the short-sleeved blue and red option – I love the geometric patterns infused with the tribal look.

Forever 21 Pick of the Day: H81 Adria Linen Shorts, $20

[Julia is wearing the H81 Adria Linen Shorts, a top of her own design, and Mossimo pumps]

By July, I came to the sad conclusion that jean cut-offs show my gams no mercy, and I’m better off wearing a more flattering jean short fit. Luckily, I discovered the H81 Adria Linen Short, $19.90, a linen and cotton blend with a removable matching belt that has a tiny bit of flare in order to not hug my leg, and slit back pockets to compliment, instead of surpress, my derriere. I’ve tried dressing the shorts up, which works wonderfully (seen in the pic), and making them more casual with a solid beater or worn tee and canvas sneakers looks absolutely adorable. The shorts tend to retain their shape and can be worn about three times before needing to be washed, and definitely can be packed away and pulled out again next summer.

Fashion with a twist

forever21_twist_tank_tops
Who doesn’t love a little extra embellishment on an otherwise basic top? Spicing up a t-shirt or tank with a creative twist, can elevate it from “eh” to awesome. That’s why I love these tanks from Forever 21. These summery tanks are variations in different styles and colors all with a twist!

Whether placed in the front, integrated into a halter, or defining an empire waist, these  extra  little touches are something that will catch anyone’s eye. I love to keep my wardrobe stocked with pieces like these as they provide an easy solution to the “what to wear” dilemma.

I think my favorite is the pink one (Fab Twist Pink Pleat Trim Top for $9.50!), as it has an interesting touch – a bit of a bib collar – complimented by a unique set of twists!

Fast Fashions—Forever 21’s 8TEE4 Hedges Into American Apparel Territory

forever21tees

Forever 21 has been busy launching new lines these days—its plus-size Faith 21, and even more recently, new contemporary line Love 21. Love 21 seemed to get a fair amount of online press, but what intrigued me more was the launch of 8TEE4, a collection of American Apparel-esque basics, including burnout tanks, tees and tunics, itty-bitty acid wash or knit short-shorts, and hoodies. As you can guess, the prices are super low, ranging from $6.80-$16.80. As to quality and fit, I cannot say, but I can tell you that an 8TEE4 tank very similar to an American Apparel tank resting in my drawer this instant is less than half the price.

Love 21: Was That Really Necessary?

love21
Forever 21
has been in the news recently for its legal woes [subscription required], but in spite of getting sued left and right, they’re expanding their business like crazy. They’re set to open a huge Times Square location in the former Virgin Megastore, and lately they’ve been launching new lines like crazy. The first was Faith 21, a “plus size” line (I put “plus size” in quotes, because it only goes up to 2x, which still leaves out a significant portion of the plus-size market). Weird sizing aside, Faith 21 make sense–young plus-size customers are very limited in terms of fashionable clothes, so, hey, cheap and disposable mass-produced clothing for all!

I was a little puzzled, however, when I got an email about Love 21, Forever 21’s new “contemporary” line. My first thought was that the line was going to be more expensive–in industry terms, “contemporary” refers to a price point and a customer, like that of Barneys Co-Op, Neiman Marcus Cusp, the 2nd floor at Bloomingdales, etc.–and, really, does anyone want to pay more for clothes from Forever 21? Thankfully, Love 21 does not appear to be more expensive than the rest of the store’s offerings, and, at first glance, the clothes really don’t appear that different either. But my guess is that Love 21 is aimed at a slightly older customer–the dresses are a bit longer, the cuts more forgiving and covered-up. Or, as the website says, “Love 21 offers a more sophisticated, modest fit than Forever 21.” So if the average Forever 21 customer is, well, 21, add another 10 years for Love 21.

There are definitely some standout pieces. The lace detail at the shoulders of this knit top is really pretty, in a cool, downtowny kind of way. The linen side-swept skirt looks flattering, and $24.80 for linen is not too shabby. And I plan on stocking up on the very current-looking basic knit tank. Currently, Love 21 is only available online and at select stores; the only NY location is the 34th Street store. But, much like with Urban Outfitters, I find shopping Forever 21’s website a far more pleasant experience than shopping in the store.

Is this all necessary? Probably not. But considering the wackiness of the Forever 21 sizing–I have some tops that are size small, and other times I can’t even zip up a large–this is probably a good thing for those of us who love Forever 21 but probably shouldn’t be wearing juniors sizes anymore. Hopefully the more generous cut of Love 21 will take the guesswork out of shopping there.

Forever 21 Pick of the Day: Glam Rock Party Dress, $23

glamrockpartydress
I really don’t like spending a lot on “dressy dresses” due to the infrequency of wear, but on the other hand, don’t want to spend $20 on a dress, and look like I spent $20 on a dress either.  Hence, the Glam Rock Party Dress, $22.80 steps up to the plate. It’s dressy, it’s edgy, it’s inexpensive-what more do you want? I’d pair it with some over-sized stud earrings, and patent leather sky-high pumps.
