Zuburbia Vintage Pick Of the Week: On the Prowl

A friend was recently showing me his Halloween costume for this year which included garish iridescent platform shoes and a purple only-to-be-worn on Halloween polyester shirt.

But for green vintage fashionistas, these types of costumes just won’t do! Instead of spending way too many dollars on a costume you’ll wear only once and then donate to a thrift store, use this as an opportunity to score a fabulous little outfit that you’ll actually be proud to wear in public when Halloween is over.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. Go prowling on Halloween in this 1990s vintage A.J. Bari strapless leopard-print mini dress by adding a fabulous cat’s-eye mask and long black-painted fingernails for claws. Then drag it out without those holiday additions for a dinner date a month from now.

It’s quite a versatile find for a vintage fashionista!

Witches’ Kitchen Casserole Cauldron

tord-boontje-cauldron

Double, double, toil and trouble! Concoct the perfect witches’ brew (or a totally harmless casserole that’s just frighteningly festive) this Halloween season with the Witches’ Kitchen Casserole Bowl from Unica. The black ceramic bowl can also be used as a regular serving bowl (snacks, candy, spooky side dishes — you name it!) and is part of a sustainable line of limited-edition goods produced from eco-friendly materials. Sure, it’s a little costly, but it’s not so garishly Halloween-ish that you’d be forced to hide it in the cupboard until next year. It’s universally sleek and stylish for kitchenware, but with the right seasonal decor and the perfect pointed hat, it’s potion-ready!

Price: $360

Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add the Witches’ Kitchen Casserole Bowl to the Hive.

Alternatives to a High-Sugar Halloween

non-sugar-trick-or-treats

When the pumpkins appear on doorsteps and the smell of mulled cider fills the air anticipation runs high for Halloween.  It’s time to trick or treat!  However, with all the sugar from the candy our kids collect it seems more of a trick on our kids teeth than a treat.  This year try something different and hand out tasty but healthy treats to the kids in your ‘hood.  Kids will love them and their parents will thank you in the long run.

Snikiddy Snacks- the all natural cookie snack packs are a healthy but delicious alternative.  Made with whole wheat flour and unrefined cane sugar these tasty trans fat free cookies have no preservatives, artificial colors, flavors or hydrogenated oils.  Take that conventional boxed cookie packs!

Be Like a Ball Game- Pretzels, popcorn, peanuts!  They all come in small, handy snack-sized bags and kids love them.  These high-energy healthy food choices won’t break your bank or any braces either.

Toys, Stickers and Stuff- What kid doesn’t like “stuff”?  Temporary tattoos, small boxes of crayons, colored chalk, stickers, markers and tiny jars of bubbles or play-doh are more enticing than we realize.  It lasts longer too.  Kids typically eat only 20% of their candy before they forget about it or parents throw it out.  Yo-yo’s, funny erasers, fake teeth and silly putty will stick around long after that box of Milk Duds.

Halloween Costume Idea: Lady Gaga

You’ll have the paparazzi after you

Every day is Halloween for Lady Gaga. That means you’ll have a fairly easy time dressing like the famous, outrageous singer for the Halloween holiday. Your most important accessory? A blonde wig.

Your blonde wig can either be short and curly or nice and straight, depending on which Lady Gaga you want to recreate. Another necessity for your costume will be long fake eyelashes, since Lady Gaga’s lashes are pretty much out of control. With your blonde wig and long eyelashes, we think you’ll immediately be recognized as Lady Gaga.

Now, you need to decide exactly which Lady Gaga you want to recreate. If you simply want to be a generic Lady Gaga, you’ll need to wear something pantless. A leotard or bodysuit is probably your best bet; just whatever you do, don’t wear pants! If you’re really wary about leaving your house sans pants, you can pick up a pair of leggings. But they must be super shiny PVC leggings; we recommend silver or red. Make sure you also pick up a pair of large, aviator-style sunglasses to top off your outfit.

Your other option is to dress as Lady Gaga in one of her crazy costumes. Choose your favorite and try to recreate it. But since many of her costumes are so intricate, weird, and complicated, you might be best off just going pantless and going as Lady Gaga on a “normal” day. Of course, we’d love to dress as Lady Gaga in her bubble costume this Halloween. Simply blow up about 30 clear balloons and attach them to your body.

Lady Gaga is a simple, cost-effective Halloween costume that is sure to make a hit! Bonus points if you can sing all her songs.

Keep warm this fall with funky tights

leg-avenue-tights
Outlandish tights are back yet again this autumn and winter, but there’s no need to dig the old ones out from the back of your drawer when there’s a huge variety of cute and funky tights out there that are suitable for a range of budgets. There are lots of patterned tights also suitable for Halloween costumes.

I really love this season’s offerings from Leg Avenue, which is always one of the main places I turn when I need new tights.  Their striped tights have always been a staple of my winter wardrobe whenever patterned tights are in, and it looks like I’ll be turning to them again this year.  You can get them in a variety of color combinations, and they look great with short or mid-length skirts.  You don’t even need to be that careful with patterns, because this coming season busy tights are meant to go hand-in-hand with other patterned items, anyway.

Get Frightfully Green This Halloween

eco-halloween

Yes, Halloween is only weeks away. Perhaps you are all set with decor, candy and costumes. But if you are like me, there are still costumes to buy, pumpkins to carve and decorations to hang. My daughter is so excited that she wants to buy a pumpkin every she sees one on display. This year we will make our official trip to the organic pumpkin patch the weekend before Halloween. Carving will happen two days before the big night. Last year my daughter was old enough to enjoy the season and we carved our pumpkins way too early and they imploded by the time October 31st rolled around. This year I’m considering purchasing as many eco-friendly Halloween decorations as possible. And recycling things we have around the house for seasonal decor. I have a couple ornate Victorian looking candelabras which I’ll spray paint black paint to make a centerpiece in the dining room. I’ll be cutting out black construction paper silhouettes of black cats and spiderwebs from construction paper and then toss it in the recycling bin afterward. I’ve also found a few eco-friendly Halloween decor and party items that help to reduce waste and support fair trade labor.
