Chenille is the perfect winter fabric – not for clothes, but for throws. Chenille has that warm, rich look and feel that instantly transforms the mood of a room, and if you’ve ever owned a chenille blanket, then you already know how soft and wonderful it is to cuddle up to.
The thing is, chenille throws often come in these really bold, garish colors, and sometimes that can be a bit too much if your living room or bedroom decor is a bit more understated. So I was pleased to see that Restoration Hardware (yes, the furniture and hardware store) has these wonderful fringed chenille throws in a range of earth tones and subtle shades that complement the soft luxury of the fabric, rather than overpowering it. I’ve got two of these, one over the back of the sofa and one at the foot of the bed, and they’re perfect for when you’re watching TV and you just feel a little chilly. The rest of the time, they make the room look gorgeous and wintry.

While it’s true that I scoured Craigslist like the best of them when I got my new apartment, there were a few items that I just knew — secondhand wasn’t going to cut it. The bed was one of those things. And, believe it or not, the bedroom curtains turned out to be one of those things as well.
Curtains, to me, are so personal. Luckily the apt. came with blinds already, but if it hadn’t, I would have splurged for some good blinds as well. I am definitely one of those unfortunate people who just can’t fall asleep when there is light in the room. At all.
So I headed over to one of my favorite places to shop — Pier 1. Lucky for me, they were having a sale, and I was able to get a cute pair of curtains and leave a little room in my wallet for some other apartment necessities. Good things come to those who bargain hunt.
It’s getting to be that time of year when you’ll soon start spending most of your time indoors. Some people complain, but I kind of like it – it’s a chance to really make your home cozy and inviting, a little den of warmth where you can hibernate until spring. Since you’re going to be at home so often, you may as well invest some time and a little bit of cash in making your home a place you’ll actually want to stay.
Even if your decor is mostly light and cool, it’s nothing that you can’t warm up with the addition of a few candles for mood lighting, and some accents like Horchow’s herringbone cashmere throw. Frette also offers some lovely styles. Their “Horizon” wool blanket is color-blocked with bold grey stripes and would blend perfectly into a modern loft-type atmosphere. Cashmere is just warm and cozy, yet soft just like your favorite sweater. Give your home that autumn or winter feel and make any room instantly more inviting in cold weather.

fter seeing pictures of Gweneth Paltrow’s house in East Hampton’s I was curious to see what her good friend Aerin Lauder house would look like. Not only is Aerin Lauder allowing us to take a pic at her glamorous apartment in Manhattan but she also is opening up the doors of the her house in East Hampton’s..the original house from Estee Lauder. She also shares tips on entertaining, decoration and more. First let’s take a look at her apartment in Manhattan….

The color palette is her apartment is predominant in neutral shades of beige and gold. When Lauder hosts dinners in the city, she does so beneath a light fixture by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, in a dining room painted dark, rich eggplant-purple. In the kitchen, designed by Borus, blue and white again predominate, but they appear in a boldly patterned fabric on Chinese Chippendale–style white chairs; the pale walls are punctuated by cheerful artworks by her sons. Love the wall cover done by Grazie in her dressing room.

It is surprising how small changes like decorative pillows can make a huge difference in how your home’s decor. I’m always making an effort to change little things around my house just to keep myself from getting bored, and it really does help.
Nate Berkus is an inspiration in home design. He is featured regularly on Oprah and I really love a lot of his recent home items. His collection for HSN has many reasonably priced classic home accessories and furniture that can be combined to create a classic eclectic look.
One hot find is the beaded tambourine pillow. At less than $20 for a set of two, this is a great way to add a colorful accent to your living room or bedroom without breaking the bank and of course you can use them in conjunction with other pillows or a nice chenille throw and start getting your home ready for the cooler weather that will be coming very soon.
But don’t wait too long to snatch them up – if you buy them now from Home Shopping Network, they’re $19, marked down from $59.95!

Seriously, there’s nothing I love more than flipping through a well-done magazine. Whether it’s showcasing the hottest trends for fall, or seeing all the fabulous editorial photoshoots — I love them! That’s just one of the reasons I love going to the bookstore and picking up a couple home design mags. For around $20, I can imagine all the ways I could change my place – paint this/move that, etc! My favorite is Elle Decor, because they have celebrity homes that are simply unbelievable. For instance, last issue, they showed Anna Sui’s abode – amazing prints and all! My favorite hardbound selection can sometimes be hard to find, but the Domino: Book of Decorating is great for determining your style, and solving different space solutions – like renting a tiny studio.
