Vintage Pick Of The Day: Bamboo Bling

Bamboo is an environmental wonderkid. This fastest growing plant on the planet (up to 4-ft per day in some species!) releases 35% more oxygen than trees and can be harvested sustainably. Here are some more interesting bamboo facts:

* The filament in Thomas Edison’s first light bulb was made of carbonized bamboo.
* Alexander Graham Bell’s first phonograph needle was made of bamboo.
* There is a 250-yd suspension bridge in China made strictly from bamboo–no nails or iron needed.

In tribute of this miracle material designed by Mother Nature herself, I present today’s VPOD. This vintage 1970s gold Napier necklace is made of bamboo-like rings that add style to the list of bamboo’s amazing properties.

It’s a lovely bit of bamboo bling for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Olive’s Very Vintage.

Anna Sheffield Jewelry Collection for Target

You might have noticed that things are taking a turn to inspiration from vintage and dandy inspired looks this season.  The female dandy look is everywhere. To keep from looking too masculine accessorize with feminine details such as frilly blouses and vintage accessories. One designer whose jewelry is spot on for the dandy look is Anna Sheffield. We love the  Cuckoo Clock Ring and Bird And Scissor Earring from the Anna Sheffield® for Target® collection.

Target has continued it’s designer masstidge trend with a jewelry collection from Anna Sheffield. Anna is a New York based jewelry designer who is originally from New Mexico. Anna’s aesthetic is inspired by “the spare, hewn and intrinsic beauty was imparted by the mores and surrounds of the Southwest- seemingly disparate influences culminate in her unique vantage point,” according to her website. Raised in such diverse surroundings as Saudi Arabia and California, the designer was trained various artistic fields including blacksmithing and costume design. Anna’s haute-costume line of jewelry is branded under the name “Bing Bang” which includes a bespoke custom collection crafted with materials including sterling, gold and precious stones. Heirloom, keepsake and talisman objects are recurring themes in Anna’s collections. Anna has also collaborated with fashion designers Philip Lim and Marc Jacobs. The Target collaboration is one of her most recent. Retailers carrying the line include: Barney’s New York, United Arrows Tokyo, Joyce Hong Kong, Le Bon Marche Paris.

Pyramid Stud Earrings with a Glam Twist!

pyramid-stud-earrings
Pyramid studs are popping up everywhere this fall: on belts, handbags, shoes, and now jewelry. My favourite bracelet of the moment is a black leather band with a double row of gold tone pyramid studs; somehow, it manages to dress up even the most basic outfit. Now I’m hunting for a pair of stud earrings, and here are the two standouts, both edgy and glam! Add a little texture and pavé stones to the mix, and they’re golden in my ears. From left, Giles & Brother Tiny Pyramid Stud Earrings $78.00 from ShopBop; Juicy Couture Pavé Pyramid Stud Earrings $48.00 from Nordstrom.

Oh Plah!: A Baby Safe Bracelet

roundhouse_oh_plah_teething

“Oh Plah!” is French for “Here you go!”. It is also a bracelet specifically designed for moms of babies. Made of medical grade thermoplastic, it is non-toxic, bacteria resistant, and free of lead, latex, PVC, BPA and phthalates and thus completely safe for baby.

You and baby can bend, roll, twist, bite, play with and wear this bracelet. It is very durable and can be easily cleaned with soap and water. It dries quickly so you can wear it again right away. When the time comes, Roundhouse Design Collaborative (the makers of Oh Plah!) will pay to have the bracelet shipped back to them so that they can recycle it into new product. Very cool!

If you are a nursing mom, this bracelet can also be used as a reminder. Since there is no clasp, it can easily be switched to the opposite wrist to help you keep track of which side comes next.

Veg-Art Bowls and Jewelry

ART_025_sm

I’m a vegetarian, so it’s in my nature to love vegetables. Still, when I think of veggies, the last think I think of is beautiful, functional artwork. But lucky for me, artist Margaret Dorfman does. Dorfman makes gorgeous bowls and jewelry from fresh vegetables that have been cured for days, then pressed, dried and aged. She doesn’t use any chemicals for her products, and each bowl is hand-shaped and unique. So while I’m sitting in my kitchen eating beets, zucchini, carrots, bok choy, pineapple, purple cabbage, celery, or red and yellow bell peppers — Dorfman is turning them into artwork, instead. I think her use for them will make more of an impression than mine.

Sparkle me Pretty with Fabulous and Festive Earrings

special-occasion-earrings

Although I am sad to say good-bye to summer. Fall’s arrival is welcomed with an air of excitement. Along with the cooler weather come many cultural events such as the ballet, opera and the fall antiques show that are worth dressing up for. The next three months are jam-packed with social events and many occasions to celebrate with friends and family. This time of year I take careful inventory of my accessories and in particular, earrings. I am in desparate need of some fabulous and festive earrings and have spotted a few that are calling my name…

Ever since spying the gorgreous vintage turquoise necklace on Eva Mendez and her white Dior gown at the Golden Globes, and on The Rachel Zoe Project, I am in love with the beautiful blue stone paired with white. So these 24-karat yellow gold-plated teardrop earrings ($315.00 at Neiman Marcus.com) obviously caught my eye. The amazing detail inset and hammered drops are accented with turquoise beads, and gold Austrian crystals. Next from Isharya is a pair of teardrop earrings with purple resin stones ($315.00 at Neiman Marcus.com). So pretty and delicate, these 18-karat gold plated drop earrings are sure to turn a head or two.  The Turkish designer, Gurhan Orhan has a distinctive hand hammered look to his designs and is a pioneer in the use of 24k gold in jewelry design. These duster graduated multi-flake chain earrings ($3100 at Fragments.com) feature 24k yellow gold with black diamond beads. I bet these earrings look amazing as they shimmer in the light. If money were no object I’d instantly grab a pair of these Pippa Small Peacock Earrings, (£6,500 at AstleyClarke.com). These charming dramatic earrings from London designer, Pippa Small are made of 18k gold and with a peacock design and labradorite detailing.
