Caroline Chu Anti-Aging Skincare Regime

caroline-chu_

I had lunch recently with Caroline Chu, the founder of the Caroline Chu skincare and makeup line. Caroline’s namesake beauty brand was launched in 2007 and on QVC earlier this month. Caroline is a classic beauty and she is living proof and a testament to her products. In addition to her gracious personality, Caroline is an innovator in the beauty world, combining technology with the finest ingredients used by generations of women in Asia to defy aging. Caroline Chu is high tech business woman turned beauty entrepreneur who gave up her career as a successful creative director in Silicon Valley before launching her own skincare and cosmetics line now available at Zappos and QVC. While jet-setting around the globe to faraway destinations, Caroline was inspired to pursue her true passion, the art affordable and effective skincare. Caroline then spent two years researching and developing her products drawing on her background in fine art and high tech.

Caroline Chu’s vision is to let women indulge in her products —an experience every woman deserves, no matter how busy her life. Every product is tested, and used by Caroline and her team. Each product is made in small batches in order to maintain a high degree of quality. As a brand, Caroline Chu stands for more than good looks. It’s about embracing the feeling of empowerment and comfort in one’s own skin.

Caroline gave me a few of her products to try. Two of my favorites are the Day & Night moisturizing cream and the Bamboo herbal face scrub. The Day & Night Cream is smooth and velvety and absorbs quickly without feeling greasy or leaving shiny patches on my skin. It also created a smooth and even surface on which to apply my primer, concealer and foundation. It has quite a luxurious feel to it. I don’t have many wrinkles (yet!) but hopefully this will prevent the premature appearance of lines down the road. Also part of my weekly regime is the Bamboo Herbal Facial Scrub, which I use weekly to exfoliate and my skin feels refreshed afterward. Although I do have to be careful not to scrub around under my nose and chin because of rosacea. I like the fact that the beads are natural and will dissolve and not harm the environment. Both of these products are available in the Caroline Chu Anti Aging Kit at QVC for $89, normally $99. My mom is also a fan of Caroline’s skincare line and I plan to buy it for her for Christmas.

Smashbox Cosmetics Reign Collection

Smashbox Cosmetics Reign Collection was designed by makeup artists, photographers and models in the interest of creating a flawless look. The 2009 “Reign” Color Collection is allegedly inspired by the “rule of the English Tudors” so as to “epitomize the lavish extravagance of royalty.” Despite the more than slightly pretentious choice of muse, Smashbox delivers a series of products that may very well be worthy of royal use. The collection includes Lip Gloss, Lash DNA Mascara, Fusion Blush, and Jet Set Palette; all of which come packaged in what could only be interpreted as a convoluted Smashbox-logo-meets-Tudor-Crest design.

Although this reviewer would not dare assume to know whether any product is worthy of a queen’s application, it does seem that in some cases Smashbox has conjured up some luxurious and high-quality cosmetics:

Jet Set Palette ($48): Conveniently housed in a leather compact, the Jet Set Palette is this reviewer’s favorite product of the collection. Such high praise is primarily due to the fancy leather casing and the Mini Arced Liner Brush, which allows for smooth and steady application. Colors include matte black and matte dark brown eyeliner
for top eyelids, and metallic gold and metallic brown colors for bottom lashes to achieve a brightening effect.

Fusion Blush ($32): Like the Jet Set Palette, the Fusion Blush also arrives in an impressive leather compact, complete with a mirror; however, the mirror loses all purpose when closing the compact results in the glass surface coming in direct contact with the blush itself. That being said, the product meets its promise to deliver a “naturally-flushed appearance,” as a result of the subtle mixing of both the shimmer and matte shades, which are presented side-by-side in the same compact casing.

Lash DNA Mascara ($19): Encased with a convenient application guide, the Reign Collection Lash DNA Mascara in plum is certainly unique, perhaps
fit for those seeking spotlight much like that highlighting a royal throne. The wand is thick, as is the pasty liquid, but application is smooth. Although the color is not conventional, this product’s effect is actually rather subtle and not at all as purple-y as would be expected. Also of note: this product is marked “cruelty-free.”

Lip Gloss ($18): The Reign Collection Lip Gloss’s somewhat tacky application is overcome by a sweet aroma and a charming keychain cap. Smashbox encourages users to “indulge lips in extravagant color and scandalous shine,” yet the effect is actually rather dull and reminiscent of this reviewer’s pre-lipstick adolescence, made up mostly of drugstore finds affordable on a babysitter’s budget.

Smashbox’s 2009 Color Collection is available at The Plaza Beauty by Warren-Tricomi, One West 58th Street at The Plaza Hotel’s Grand Concourse Level.

Do You Dig Drew Barrymore’s Look?

Drew Barrymore, Trendy and Debatable

Am I the only person who isn’t crazy about Drew Barrymore’s “fashion” choices of late? While I adore the actress, there’s something about pseudo-rocker duds and oddly styled pieces that rub me the wrong way. Hey, at least she cut off all the black tips! Now what do you think of her red lipstick?

Here’s the thing: I think that Drew has been wearing the wrong shade of red lipstick, and she should probably try a couple different shades before she sticks with one. While I’m no color expert, I do like my reds! Here’s what you need to know to avoid Drew’s mistake.

*Aim for fire-engine red if you have olive-colored skin. With a medium skin tone, you can pull off a lot more than you might think.

*Try cherry red if your skin is slightly pinkish, or has pink undertones. If you’re scared about cherry, buy a cheap lipstick before you invest–that way, you’ll get to thoroughly convince yourself in the mirror before you take the plunge.

*Look for deeper blue-ish reds if you have dark brown or black skin. I like MAC for their variety in this particular palette.

What do you think about Drew’s lipstick in this pic shown? I’m so thrown by it, but sometimes I think it’s just me!

Our Favorite Mascaras: Luxe and Less

mascaraapplication.jpg

Sometimes we have a lot of money to spend, sometimes we don’t. When it comes to mascara, we know some of the best can only be found in a department store or specialty boutique. We also know that some of the best can be found in the drugstore for less than $10.

These are our favorites, suitable for every budget.

Our Top 3 Picks– LUXE:

givenchy_phenomeyes_mascara.jpg

Givenchy Phenomen’EyesThis odd brush gives our lashes the most amazing look: lengthened, separated and strengthened thanks to panthenol in the formula. After a little practice, we are now able to create a gorgeous lash look that we love. $28, sephora.com

diorshow_iconic.jpg

Dior DiorShow Iconic

With its soft, oblique cut brush to wrap its mascara formula around each lash and give an extra curling effect, Iconic is one every woman should own, or at least try. This also provides a surprising amount of fantastic volume and contains a silk extract that is normally found in hair conditioners. $27, saks.com

Shiseido The Makeup Lasting Lift Mascara

We love this mascara for providing our lashes with definition, length and fabulous volume. Air Volume Powder in the formula offers curl enhancement and a light-weight feel. Waterproof and sweat-proof. $22, nordstrom.com

Our Top 3 Picks– LESS:

maybelline_lash_discovery.jpg

Maybelline Lash Discovery
For lashes that are practically invisible, this makes them appear virtually out of nowhere. Even those of us with thick lashes love this for its ability to get to every last lash. $6.59, drugstore.com

cg_pro_all_in_one_wp.jpgCoverGirl Professional Waterproof All In One
This mascara does it all– volumizes, lengthens, separates, is water-proof and won’t flake or bother your eyes if you wear contacts. If there’s a club for over-achieving mascaras, this one is a member. $4.99, drugstore.com

rimmel_glam_eyes_mascara.jpg

Rimmel London Glam Eyes Mascara Don’t let the skinny, flexible wand fool you– this mascara means business. Short bristles work to add volume and length and the longer ones keep lashes from clumping. It takes a few coats to get to serious volume, but trust us, it’s completely worth the effort. $7.49, walgreens.com

Impulse Buy of the Week – Christian Siriano Collection for Victoria’s Secret

siriano-victoria-secret-eye

Christian Siriano is absolutely on fire (and yes, “fierce”)! Since competing on one of my favorite reality shows (pretty much the only one I watch), Project Runway, Siriano has entered into several very creative and smart business ventures which allow him to expand his amazing design sense to areas outside of his runway fashion collections.

He’s signed on to create a line of shoes for Payless to launch during Sept. Fashion Week (also inspired by the same theme as the makeup, which is Egyptian design/hieroglyphics), has shopaholics already chomping at the bit.

Now he’s just launched his very first cosmetics collection for Victoria’s Secret, the Christian Siriano Collection! The collection interprets the themes of his Fall 2009 fashion collection with soft, luxurious textures and strong, rich colors.

As soon as I saw the gold packaging, the color palette and of course the super feminine (and yet uniquely done) ruffles on his cosmetic bag – I knew I had to have it – all of it.

Ready, Set, Prep: The Best Makeup Primers For Your Eyes, Lips, & Face

primer-makeup

As the ultimate makeup junkie, I have a tough time saying no to a new shadow shade, lip color, or nail hue… and it certainly shows in my inability to organize it all. But now that my makeup collection has successfully taken over every drawer, zip case, surface, nook and cranny of my humble abode, I’m starting to resist the urge to buy more and more pots of colors that I’ll probably never use more than once. Instead, I’ve narrowed my focus to scouting out the newest and best priming products that can help make the most of the colors I already have for easy application, flawless appearance, and maximum smudge-free wear all day long. I love the way Smashbox’s face primer gives my skin a smoother, even tone and a less oily-looking complexion under my powder, and now that I’ve tried Urban Decay’s eyeshadow primer potion, I can’t understand how I lived without it in the first place! Designed to target specific problem areas like the appearance of pores, uneven redness, or runny eyes, today’s best primers are bound to keep your makeup in check and have you looking like a million bucks, even with the same shades you already have! Check the slideshow to see a slew of splurge-worthy products that can help keep your makeup in place on your eyes, lips, lashes, and face!

5 Minute Beauty Routine for Busy Moms

moms-five-minute-beauty-rou
Mom’s beauty routine is the first thing that falls by the wayside  as she becomes busier.  Taking the time to put on a little makeup in the morning can go a long way in making a mom feel good about herself- even if it only takes 5 minutes.  Here are a few quick beauty tips for busy moms.

  1. Use a tinted sunscreen- Protect your skin and even out your skin tone in one easy step.
  2. Curl your eyelashes- This helps make tired eyes appear brighter.  Try a Talika Heated Eyelash Curler to speed up the process.
  3. Wear Clear Mascara- A clear formula prevents smudges and smears.  It also doubles as an eyebrow tamer/shaper.
  4. Use Blush- Blush gives your face a healthy looking glow.  Try Nars Blush in Orgasm.  It’s sheer peachy pink shade is flattering on any skin tone.
  5. Go with Gloss- Gloss is very portable, even in hot weather since there is no risk of melting.  It also creates the illusion of fuller lips.  Try Bobbi Brown Brightening Lip Gloss.  It comes in four flattering shades and is infused with brightening pearls for a glowing sheen.
