Smashbox Cosmetics Reign Collection

Smashbox Cosmetics Reign Collection was designed by makeup artists, photographers and models in the interest of creating a flawless look. The 2009 “Reign” Color Collection is allegedly inspired by the “rule of the English Tudors” so as to “epitomize the lavish extravagance of royalty.” Despite the more than slightly pretentious choice of muse, Smashbox delivers a series of products that may very well be worthy of royal use. The collection includes Lip Gloss, Lash DNA Mascara, Fusion Blush, and Jet Set Palette; all of which come packaged in what could only be interpreted as a convoluted Smashbox-logo-meets-Tudor-Crest design.

Although this reviewer would not dare assume to know whether any product is worthy of a queen’s application, it does seem that in some cases Smashbox has conjured up some luxurious and high-quality cosmetics:

Jet Set Palette ($48): Conveniently housed in a leather compact, the Jet Set Palette is this reviewer’s favorite product of the collection. Such high praise is primarily due to the fancy leather casing and the Mini Arced Liner Brush, which allows for smooth and steady application. Colors include matte black and matte dark brown eyeliner
for top eyelids, and metallic gold and metallic brown colors for bottom lashes to achieve a brightening effect.

Fusion Blush ($32): Like the Jet Set Palette, the Fusion Blush also arrives in an impressive leather compact, complete with a mirror; however, the mirror loses all purpose when closing the compact results in the glass surface coming in direct contact with the blush itself. That being said, the product meets its promise to deliver a “naturally-flushed appearance,” as a result of the subtle mixing of both the shimmer and matte shades, which are presented side-by-side in the same compact casing.

Lash DNA Mascara ($19): Encased with a convenient application guide, the Reign Collection Lash DNA Mascara in plum is certainly unique, perhaps
fit for those seeking spotlight much like that highlighting a royal throne. The wand is thick, as is the pasty liquid, but application is smooth. Although the color is not conventional, this product’s effect is actually rather subtle and not at all as purple-y as would be expected. Also of note: this product is marked “cruelty-free.”

Lip Gloss ($18): The Reign Collection Lip Gloss’s somewhat tacky application is overcome by a sweet aroma and a charming keychain cap. Smashbox encourages users to “indulge lips in extravagant color and scandalous shine,” yet the effect is actually rather dull and reminiscent of this reviewer’s pre-lipstick adolescence, made up mostly of drugstore finds affordable on a babysitter’s budget.

Smashbox’s 2009 Color Collection is available at The Plaza Beauty by Warren-Tricomi, One West 58th Street at The Plaza Hotel’s Grand Concourse Level.

Our Favorite Mascaras: Luxe and Less

mascaraapplication.jpg

Sometimes we have a lot of money to spend, sometimes we don’t. When it comes to mascara, we know some of the best can only be found in a department store or specialty boutique. We also know that some of the best can be found in the drugstore for less than $10.

These are our favorites, suitable for every budget.

Our Top 3 Picks– LUXE:

givenchy_phenomeyes_mascara.jpg

Givenchy Phenomen’EyesThis odd brush gives our lashes the most amazing look: lengthened, separated and strengthened thanks to panthenol in the formula. After a little practice, we are now able to create a gorgeous lash look that we love. $28, sephora.com

diorshow_iconic.jpg

Dior DiorShow Iconic

With its soft, oblique cut brush to wrap its mascara formula around each lash and give an extra curling effect, Iconic is one every woman should own, or at least try. This also provides a surprising amount of fantastic volume and contains a silk extract that is normally found in hair conditioners. $27, saks.com

Shiseido The Makeup Lasting Lift Mascara

We love this mascara for providing our lashes with definition, length and fabulous volume. Air Volume Powder in the formula offers curl enhancement and a light-weight feel. Waterproof and sweat-proof. $22, nordstrom.com

Our Top 3 Picks– LESS:

maybelline_lash_discovery.jpg

Maybelline Lash Discovery
For lashes that are practically invisible, this makes them appear virtually out of nowhere. Even those of us with thick lashes love this for its ability to get to every last lash. $6.59, drugstore.com

cg_pro_all_in_one_wp.jpgCoverGirl Professional Waterproof All In One
This mascara does it all– volumizes, lengthens, separates, is water-proof and won’t flake or bother your eyes if you wear contacts. If there’s a club for over-achieving mascaras, this one is a member. $4.99, drugstore.com

rimmel_glam_eyes_mascara.jpg

Rimmel London Glam Eyes Mascara Don’t let the skinny, flexible wand fool you– this mascara means business. Short bristles work to add volume and length and the longer ones keep lashes from clumping. It takes a few coats to get to serious volume, but trust us, it’s completely worth the effort. $7.49, walgreens.com

Fall Beauty Goal: Deep, Dark Colors

fall09_stila002

Try One of These Trends

If you’re anything like me, it can be tough enough to weed out the closet and get rid of last-season and last-last season throwbacks. When it comes to beauty trends, you get bogged down in the details and might pick something unflattering. We’re featuring a few really easy beauty trends to try now for Fall 2009, and no–not the “no eyebrow” look!

Here are just a few dramatic, spot-on trends to try out:

*Rich Polish: Think drama, but not bright, when you choose to dash on some nail polish on this season. A touch of metallic polish is never bad, and rich purple and berries make a statement.

*Forest Colors: Think earthy and smokey, in dark green and gray. It’s as easy as picking up a new pot of eyeshadow, or a new fall makeup palette at the drugstore. Simply sweep some on for night, and top the look off with mascara.

*Tinted Lip Balm: Stock up on Stila lip gloss, shown, for an on-trend look that’s super low-key.

What will you be stocking up on this fall?

5 Minute Beauty Routine for Busy Moms

moms-five-minute-beauty-rou
Mom’s beauty routine is the first thing that falls by the wayside  as she becomes busier.  Taking the time to put on a little makeup in the morning can go a long way in making a mom feel good about herself- even if it only takes 5 minutes.  Here are a few quick beauty tips for busy moms.

  1. Use a tinted sunscreen- Protect your skin and even out your skin tone in one easy step.
  2. Curl your eyelashes- This helps make tired eyes appear brighter.  Try a Talika Heated Eyelash Curler to speed up the process.
  3. Wear Clear Mascara- A clear formula prevents smudges and smears.  It also doubles as an eyebrow tamer/shaper.
  4. Use Blush- Blush gives your face a healthy looking glow.  Try Nars Blush in Orgasm.  It’s sheer peachy pink shade is flattering on any skin tone.
  5. Go with Gloss- Gloss is very portable, even in hot weather since there is no risk of melting.  It also creates the illusion of fuller lips.  Try Bobbi Brown Brightening Lip Gloss.  It comes in four flattering shades and is infused with brightening pearls for a glowing sheen.

My New Favorite Beauty Tool

readytowearmascara
I have discovered a new favorite beauty tool, and I just have to share it with you. Ready to Wear’s Lash Extension is the best product I have ever used to define and elongate my eyelashes. I started out on a quest to expand my mascara proclivity past Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara, which resulted in the trial and review of both Global Goddess and IMAN mascaras (neither of which were worth my time). The next stop on my journey was R2W’s Lash Extension. And let me tell you, third time’s a charm.

Now, despite my 10-year inability to break my one-mascara-brand habit, I do have quite a bit of experience with lash extenders and falsies (as well as other eye-widening makeup tricks) from my theatre days. I dare say that if you’ve been wearing false eyelashes for a night out, you can quit right now if you go get Lash Extension, which creates the same full, dark effect–except that it is easier to apply and looks much more natural.

The product is not a gel or mascara. It’s actually a tube of teeny-tiny little dry fibers that cling to wet mascara and thicken your eyelashes. If you follow instructions (one coat of mascara on your lashes, add the fibers, one coat of mascara to seal them in place), they do an amazing job of making it look like you were born with eyelashes that Liza Minnelli would envy. Here are some before and after pics from HSN:

The only thing you have to be wary of is making a mess with the fibers. The package actually comes with instruction for clean-up, but I found it pretty easy to remove stray fibers from the tops of my cheeks where they landed. The ones I wore on my eyes came off along with the mascara thanks to my other recent discovery, Talika Lash Conditioning Cleanser. With some practice, using the R2W Lash Extensions should be a piece of cake. And you, too, can be enjoying gorgeous, lush eyelashes that your friends will envy and men will notice.

Green Gals Will Love This Beauty Brand

Organic wear’s New Formulas Work Wonders

There’s nothing nicer than a company that actually listens to its customers and tinkers with formulas until they get it right. Organic wear, which is available at Walgreens, recently underwent a bit of a transformation and is now better than ever. We know, because we tried it out before and after!

The best thing about these reworked cosmetics are their price points. Whenever I buy organic, I feel like I’m getting shaken down, but Organic Wear has Certified Organic Loose Face Powder for $13.95 (.77 oz.) and 100% Natural Origin Mascara for $9.95. Before, their line wasn’t nearly as comprehensive, and the actual texture of their powders were slightly on the chalky side. They’re far silkier now, and the tints have been readjusted for lighter skin.

In addition, Organic wear’s special paper compact boasts 93% less plastic than a traditional compact, their brushes are made from natural goat hair, and they are 100% cruelty-free. The next thing that they need to do? Work out some shades for darker skin tones!

Scary Mascara – Three Product Reviews

hsnmascaras
As a lifelong Maybelline Great Lash user, I have finally begun to consider updating my product by finding the perfect mascara for a night out. I recently received two mascaras from HSN.com. The first is IMAN Global Chic Signature Gold Long & Lush Mascara Duo in Black Caviar (it’s also available in Cognac Brown), and the second is Global Goddess Exotic Eyes Lash-Building Mascara in Blackest Black.

Let’s talk about IMAN, and start with internet reviews. You know it’s never good when a mascara review contains the words “raccoon eyes.” But that was just the beginning of a host of poor reviews for the IMAN product; many conclude with the phrase, “…which is why I sent it back” and a terse “skip this product” warning. As it turns out, I concur. But I have a quick little story that provides the background on why:

The IMAN mascara comes in a very beautiful sleek package, I have to give it that, though I’m a bit of a magpie, and good packaging gets me every time. It has two ends with two different brush types: one for lengthening, and one for thickening. Going out to my friend’s house for a casual poker night, I chose what I believed was the lengthening mascara (the ends aren’t marked) because I thought there was no need to lay it on thick just to go to someone’s apartment. It applied well and looked good on. At first. As I was walking to the apartment from the subway, it began to rain. You all know where this is going. I knew that I was soaked from head to toe when I finally arrived (after getting lost, of course) and when I showed up, I introduced myself to a few new acquaintances before going into the bathroom with a towel to dry off and freshen up. One look in the mirror, and I was hysterically laughing. Little did I know that as I entered the apartment to greet new friends, my face was covered in mascara smudges, starting with two giant dark ovals around my eyes. ‘Raccoon’ doesn’t even begin to cover it. Think Panda. Think Hamburglar. Anyway, because we’re talking about a boy’s apartment, there was only handsoap and water to be found, so it actually took some vigorous rubbing to get the worst off. When I got home to take off the rest, it still took several washes to completely cleanse my face. Thankfully, the guys were a good sport about my first impression, and the night improved from there. But I never plan to wear the IMAN again (at least, not for long periods of time); and the idea of applying even more at once with the thickening end of the brush just terrifies me.

As for the Global Goddess mascara, though the sales website claims that the product creates “bold, beautiful lashes for sultry seduction” (they like their alliteration), I found it to actually be a perfect everyday mascara. I thought it went on well and separated my lashes nicely (although, I will admit, I am still learning how to apply mascara with a curved brush)(apparently there’s a steep learning curve—get it?). Because it was a daytime look, I only applied it once, and only to my top lashes. I thought it stayed in place well and provided a flattering look for many hours.

When it came time to wash it off, I did need more than soap and water, and it made a great big mess under my eyes. Fortunately, along with the original order of two mascaras, I also received Talika Lash Conditioning Cleanser, an oil-free makeup remover which can be applied to a cotton swab and used to remove tricky eye makeup–without needing a finishing rinse afterward. I love it because I usually keep makeup removers in the bathroom so that I can wash them off my face, but I keep this one by my bed so it’s just a quick swipe before I go to sleep.

All in all, I do recommend the Global Goddess over the IMAN mascara, but the truth is that I would never spend upwards of $20 to replace either product. The cleanser, however, I would buy in a heartbeat. It’s a steal at $24.00, and I know it sounds pricey, but the tube is huge and will last you forever–plus, it’s not just a soap, it’s also a lash conditioner(not that I’m sure I would notice the difference in my eyelashes). Alas, my hunt for the perfect mascara continues. Got any suggestions?

Beauty Find: Kanebo Sensai 38*C Mascara- Volumizing and Eyelash Base

 Sensai-mascara

Many of you lovely Palacinka beauties are mascara junkies, and this one is truly going to knock your socks off! :)

Sensai Mascara 38*C Volumizing version is an updated version of Sensai's cult classic — Mascara
38*C. This mascara uses unique, thermo-sensitive technology, which withstands tears, sweat and rain
and still manages to comes off easily with water 38*C (100.4*F) or above (hence the name).

I also used the new Sensai Mascara 38*C Eyelash Base first, which has a small, narrow wand and brush, and it deposited the white coating on my lashes which primed them for the mascara, but also instantly lengthened and thickened my lashes.

I waited a minute or two and then applied the voluminous mascara (not pictured). The
brush is slightly curved and the formula is a medium/thick, liquid texture. I found that this mascara gave me really full, lush lashes and the brush did a great job of separating them. The formula is nice because it not only gives fullness, it
also gives a nice amount of length (great for those of you with shorter lashes), and the formula's texture glided easily on my lashes. I went through the day with no budging, smudging, or flaking no matter the weather or what I was doing
during the day. This is fantastic for you girls who need to apply in the AM and then forget about it!

Another fantastic feature of this mascara is that you don't have to remove with makeup remover or even a soap/cleanser! All you need to do is rinse with warm (38*C or higher) water. Once I did, I saw tiny black tube-shaped
pieces sliding off my lashes. I removed by using a very warm washcloth, pressing down softly on my eyes and then wiping off everything at one time.

I got fantastic results using just the Volumizing mascara, but if you really want show stopping lashes, I also recommend treating yourself to the 38*C Eyelash Base as well. You could very easily get hooked on this one!" – RLB

Mascara 38*C Eyelash Base and Mascara 38*C (Volumizing) are both available May 2009 at Bergdorf Goodman, select Barneys New York and Takashimaya department stores.
