Good Clothes and Good Causes: Santana Row’s 5th Annual Fall Fashion in the Park

By Carlina Harris

Hey Dolls!  Remember last week when I was complaining of a fashion show-less fashion week? It seems the stylish ones heard my prayers rantings. This Friday, I am attending the oh so chic, Santana Row’s 5th Annual Fall Fashion in the Park Runway Show, in San Jose, Ca. This event has been talked about for months now, and I feel so privileged to be attending!  It will be fabulous, and best of all will be benefiting one of four South Bay non-profit organizations! Good clothes and good causes, what more could a trend crazed dame ask for?

There are two shows both Friday and Saturday, and tickets are still available from what I hear. Not only do you get to see what will be major for fall fashion at the show, also included in your ticket: is a pre-show wine and hors d’oeuvres reception, private shopping boutique (to pick up all those amazing looks), and a post show soirée!

I love that the models will be wearing all Santana Row fashions, including: Anthropologie, Cole Haan, Furla and Blue Jeans Bar to name a few.  7PM: I watch the models strut fab moda. 8PM: I buy and strut my new fab moda! Style that is locally accessible, and relatively inexpensive is my kind of show stopping fashion!

I of course will be doing full show coverage of what I see, and who I see on Friday just for you! So expect a full update next week.  As I pack up my Louboutins, and black fashion week garb, my little vogued out heart is pitter pattering with anticipation…..

Buy it: Digby & Iona Lusca ring

When I first moved to NYC 10 years ago, Williamsburg was a somewhat sketchy neighborhood in its early gentrification period; my dear friend HG lived there in loft apartment that was easily the size of a high school gymnasium, and it was around the corner from the infamous bar Cokie’s. Now, whenever I go to Williamsburg, I marvel at all the people, restaurants, high-rise condos, and, yes, the stores. I spent Saturday afternoon shopping in the ‘burg with my friend MK, a seasoned Williamsburg resident, and to celebrate the two-days-early arrival of our respective paychecks, she took me to some of her regular haunts. A great thing about shopping in the outer boroughs, where rents are more affordable than in Manhattan, is that stores can be more selective and specialized with their merchandise, without charging an arm and a leg for it. One of my favorite shops we hit was Catbird, a tiny jewel box of a store, offering quirky jewelry and home accessories like candles. The shop has an antiquey feel, with the jewelry housed in curio-type cabinets along the walls. I should mention that they were having a sale when I was there; select items were 40% off. True to my nature, I fell in love with an item that wasn’t on sale: this Lusca ring by Brooklyn-based jeweler Digby & Iona (Catbird has a similar, albeit smaller, style, the Seppie ring, on their website). The Lusca is an octopus with a hammered, vintage look; it’s oversized, and its tentacles extend out over your other fingers. It’s definitely a statement piece, but it doesn’t scream cocktail ring–it’s more like you found it in the bottom of a trunk or in your great-grandmother’s jewelry box. At $280, it’s not necessarily a bargain, but considering its size and that it comes in sterling silver (or matte vermeil), I think it’s worth a little splurge. Unique jewelry like this doesn’t go out of style, and considering its unusual look, it could definitely become a signature piece. Hopefully it will still be there by the time my next paycheck arrives.

Fashion Week Countdown begins…

By Carlina Harris

To all the style aficionados out there: thank you, you make the world a beautiful, fashionable place! Fun to look at and even better to live in! Our time has come my dear well accessorized ladies and gents, New York Fashion Week is upon us in less than eight days. Cue the models, makeup artist’s and last minute crazed and dazed designers. No, I did not get any invite’s this year (I die, I’m dying), and will not be in New York for all the festivities (tears). One day I promise you this, I will be front row center (maybe if I became Lindsay Lohan’s new girlfriend) one day! But until then I will be continue to report fashion trends, down from earth.

This upcoming fall season is going to be a chilly one. Swaddle yourselves in cashmere, preventing frost bite, boot up in Hunters to prepare for the torrential Bay Area downpours, watch out kiddies there is a fashion blizzard ahead!

brrrrr………….

When it comes to fashion followers, devotees are becoming younger and younger, can you say Suri Cruise NYC Prep, those kids have it all, wrapped up in a Louis Vuitton bunny ear-ed bow. Whether you are, or shop for a hormonal adolescent keep these four ongoing trends in mind when you are shopping.

Boho Chic: This updated and modern bohemian look replaces the bell bottoms and earthy looks from years past with destroyed skinny denim, folk-inspired fringe vests, shaggy faux fur vests and hobo fringe bags and shoes. The current times have brought back this trend but its new age focus is funky, edgy and light hearted.

BOHO

Destroyed Denim– Not just a whole in the knee; the entire jean is shredded for an updated look. These jeans are distressed with holes straight off the rack. They’ll look like they’ve been worn for years.

More fall fashion trends this way, after the jump…

Get Fall’s Bold Geometric Prints For Less

Amid the sea of black on the fall runways were bursts of bright and bold geometric prints. Ready to rock this trend? We’ve found six printed fall items for under $250.

boldprintsfall09.png Bold prints are fun, daring, and always stylish – but they can easily go wrong. A good rule to go by is the one of proportions: if you’re thin or petite, wear small prints. If you’re tall or plus-size, wear bigger prints. Also, if you’re wearing a printed top, it’s best to go with solid pants and shoes. Here are six of our favorite geometric prints for under $250:

A printed tank with jeans and heels makes a cute “going out” outfit, and a printed skirt or dress with black tights will make you stand out at any event. While the little black dress will always be a staple, printed items are way more unique!

Kim Kardashian Chanel black bag

Kim-Kardashian-with-Khloe-w
Kim Kardashian was out shopping in West Hollywood at diva shoe store Diavolina recently and was seen sporting a brand new black Chanel bag. It is a very cool looking retro bag with a snap open top. I remember I had something similar from Prada about 10 years ago. Chanel put a whole new spin on it by making it bigger and of course quilted. I wonder if this bag is available now to the rest of us. Khloe is still sporting her Balenciaga bag with giant hardware. I love that bag it is a classic.

As for Kim’s zipper sandals, what do you think? Pretty cool? She is wearing the Jeffrey Campbell Zipper Sandal in Black with Gold and it is on sale here only. Click to get them on sale now!

Also, I posted 2 other sandal options for you that I thought you would love. Kim Kardashian would probably wear these sandals too. I love the plastic wedges because they are eco friendly and give you height. Click the photos to shop the looks now.

Cheryl Shops…Seattle

IMG_1695

The second stop on MW’s and my Pacific Northwest vacation was Seattle–we took the Amtrak Cascades line down from Vancouver, and I would highly recommend it, especially if, like me, you hate driving. Of the three cities we visited, Seattle was my least favorite; this could be because the weather was craptastic on our first day, or because we spent the least amount of time there. I had also been told that Seattle had great shopping–which might be true, as I certainly didn’t see as much of the city as I could have–but I feel like whenever people tell me this, I end up being let down (see Berlin). My other issue with Seattle is its public transportation, or lack thereof; yes, there are a lot of buses (which are free downtown on weekdays), and, yes, downtown is pretty walkable, but venturing beyond downtown can be a bit complicated. Kind of makes me with Campbell Scott’s Singles character got the Supertrain built after all.

I’m going to bet that when a lot of people think “Seattle” and “shopping,” they think of the Pike Place Market, which has levels and levels of stalls selling everything from food (including the famous Pike Place Fish Market, where they throw fish through the air) to vintage clothing. There are a lot of craft vendors here too, if that’s your thing; I bought chocolate-covered cherries at Chukar Cherries for my coworkers. I also recommend First & Pike News, which has a ton of international magazines (I gleefully bought a copy of Grazia). Just east of the market, First Avenue has a lot of shops. A Mano is a small but focused shoe store, and the selection–mostly Italian, some clogs–reminded me a lot of Soula in Brooklyn. Nuvo Moda was having a great sale, but, being a black-wearing New Yorker, their racks were just a bit too colorful for me; I felt the same about The Finerie. One of my favorite stores was Parfumerie Nasreen, a tiny shop in the Alexis Hotel that sells all manner of perfumes, from Bond No. 9 and the hard-to-find Amouage line to rare fragrances that are hard to find in America, such as Balmain’s Ambre Gris, which I totally fell in love with. Also right up the street from the Market is Alhambra, an earthy-bohemian store that can best be described as a more expensive, more sophisticated Anthropologie, with a lot of clothes from the likes of Rozae Nichols and a nice selection of jewelry. I felt like Alhambra, like many stores in downtown Seattle, was geared toward an older shopper with a lot of money to burn.

Cheryl Shops…Vancouver

cherylshopsvancouver
After two years in a row of vacationing in Europe, MW and I decided to cash in my frequent flier miles and head to the Pacific Northwest, a region of the country to which I’d never been. Our first stop was Vancouver, B.C., where I wasn’t expecting to do a lot of shopping, but managed to find a few great stores nonetheless.

Vancouver was all abuzz over the opening of its first Sephora store, which is located in the Pacific Centre, the ritziest of the city’s several malls. Inside the mall are your typical stores–Bebe, Gap, H&M–as well as the excellent Canadian shoe store Browns, which was having a great sale on everything from their in-house line to Manolo Blahnik and D&G shoes. You can also find the famed Canadian department store Holt Renfrew in the Pacific Centre; I was really excited because I got to see all of the blogger windows (I think Sea of Shoes, at right, had the best one). Nearby is The Bay, Canada’s answer to Macy’s, and if you walk south on Granville Street, there are a bunch of shops, from Canadian stalwart Aldo to Vancouver’s own John Fluevog, and the further south you go, the edgier it gets–MW and I particularly liked the Rock Shop, where he got a Wilco T-shirt and I got a badass studded cuff bracelet. In the same general area, Robson is the main shopping street, from Granville up to Jervis or so, and the shop filter over to the surrounding cross-streets, like Thurlow and Burrard. Robson has a lot of chain stores–Club Monaco, Zara, and, yes, Aldo–but there are some independent boutiques sprinkled throughout, and one of my favorites was Plenty, which has a great mix of casual, contemporary designers like Current Elliott and Fluxus. I also really liked Blubird, a block over on Alberni Street, which favors brightly colored, feminine dresses by Blugirl and Single, mixed in with Mike & Chris leather jackets, J Brand jeans, and CC Skye jewelry (there’s also a free computer, upon which your boyfriend can surf the Internet while you shop). A few doors down is M0851, the Montreal-based leather shop, which makes beautifully buttery bags and jackets. If you’re in the area and need a break, I suggest stopping by the Cupcakes shop (yes, the cupcake craze has spread to Vancouver), where you can sample several flavors in mini sizes.

Shopping Local: Luxe and Liberty

luxeliberty
Granted, what’s local for me probably isn’t local for you; but the Orlando-area shop Luxe & Liberty is deserving of your attention, even if you have to order online instead of popping in to pick out a few choice gifts.  Organized around goods made in America, L&L stocks lines both little and big, from neighborhood artisans to well-known names like Calphalon, Amenity Home, and Pangea Organics.  (See?  I told you they were good.)

1.  Skinny Fish Artisan Stationary–produced in small batches by artist Shawn Laughlin; 2.  Leather Photo Album, in prismatic colors; 3.  Kalender Platter, trimmed in platinum and gold; 4.  Herb Bowl with Mezzaluna Chopper–one of those tools you didn’t even know you needed; 5.  Endangered Parrots of the World Chess Set–prohibitively expensive, outrageously fun; 6.  Crocus Rocks Glasses with 22K Accents–hello, hostess; 7.  Chiller Pitcher with Lid–a closed carafe that will keep al fresco flies out; 8.  Chick Chair; 9.  Balustrade Napkins–round and round the table they go; 10.  Aptos Collection Pebble Pendant; 11.  Amber Dard Hunter Rose Thermometer & Clock–outdoor temperature gauges are so underrated; 12.  Teco Art Pottery Orb Vase–lovely lines, from an exactingly reproduced historical collection.
