A couple of days ago a friend introduced me to the wonders of ModCloth, and after going on a huge shopping binge, I can say that I’m firmly addicted now. Basically they’ve taken all the best modern retro, vintage, indie, and bohemian looks, and combined them into one amazing online store. After about five minutes of browsing around, you’ll know whether this is your sort of thing or not, as they hone in on a very specific set of looks.

I haven’t quite figured out how their stock works – they have pages and pages of clothes in each category, but it seems like there are limited numbers of each item, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. So if you see something you can’t live without, don’t hesitate. My favorite buy so far? This “perfect pencil dress,” which lives up to its name with its mid 20th century faux-First-Lady look. I’ll be spending a lot more money on these clothes, for sure.

Who doesn’t love a little black dress? A strand of elegant pearls? A short tweed jacket? An always forever classic set of “c’s” interlocking? Ah Chanel- my one true yet very expensive love! You’re back from hiatus, vacation, fashion week? Who knows, all I heard is that you left me months ago, leaving me and our spot at Maiden Lane all alone to be sad, depressed and fashion-less.

Whats that? Your back, and you’re opening your pristine doors once again to an even better, and more extravagant boutique in San Francisco. Glory be, music to my ears, how I waited for this day. We shall be reunited once again! But I am not a jealous gal, I know I can’t keep you all to myself.

So here’s the deets: November 20, and 21 from 10am-6pm, the official re-opening of the renovated boutique. Enjoy the festivities with complimentary makeup sessions, and discover the Cruise Collection exclusives.

THE SCENE: For one of the most anticipated designer collaborations, H&M this time was duly prepared for the launch. There was a long line outside of the store, however once inside, the crowd was calm and controlled, an army of staff was available, and the ground floor of the H&M flaghip on 51st and 5th Avenue was completely rearranged to accommodate the day. An hour and a half into the doors opening, the racks and display tables were still neat and fully stocked with a range of clothe and accessories while peoplke seemed to mill about and wait in the other line at the back of the store to try on shoes. This was the most interesting part of the whole event: people had to go to the second floor to get a wristband and then proceed back down stairst o wait in line to be entered into the “shoe holding pen” in groups — on a time limit! Once you’re time was up, you had to get out of the ring and head right to the cashier, which was a row of waiting employees, one foot away. Kudos to H&M for finally figuring out how to properly manage these launches!

The COLLECTION: Although I’d been looking at pics online for ages, I realized that seeing the clothes and just looking at pictures of them can be two entirely different things! The clothing tended to be more of the evening sort and of on par quality with H&M, with embroidery and sequins galore, faux fur vest, jumpsuits, suede dresses, and plastic clutches, while the shoes were actually a little less exciting in person. My suggestion: less clothes, more shoes, overall lower price points.

If Jimmy Choo & H&M expect people to pay $100-$150 for four-inch-heels that provide zero padding or support, why won’t they just charge $50-$75? Lest we not forget that a designer collaboration in this nature is a teaming up of a designer brand with a lower-priced retailer — just because I’d like to pay less money for a pair of Jimmy Choos doesn’t mean that my tolerance of footpain would be any different than anyone who would pay $500 or $600 for a pair of shoes.

So in conclusion — good try, but I, and I think a lot of other people, would at least be willing to rationalize 4-inch-heels that are killers, for $49.99, but the pricing of this collection is a little too much to rationalize on that front. Even though we may be pinching pennies these days, there are certain things that just shouldn’t be sacrficied-like well-made, comfortable footwear. Walking over to the H&M flagship I dropped off three pairs of shoes that I love to be re-heeled and re-soled for a total of $60 — now that’s a deal!

Hey Dolls! Remember last week when I was complaining of a fashion show-less fashion week? It seems the stylish ones heard my prayers rantings. This Friday, I am attending the oh so chic, Santana Row’s 5th Annual Fall Fashion in the Park Runway Show, in San Jose, Ca. This event has been talked about for months now, and I feel so privileged to be attending! It will be fabulous, and best of all will be benefiting one of four South Bay non-profit organizations! Good clothes and good causes, what more could a trend crazed dame ask for?

There are two shows both Friday and Saturday, and tickets are still available from what I hear. Not only do you get to see what will be major for fall fashion at the show, also included in your ticket: is a pre-show wine and hors d’oeuvres reception, private shopping boutique (to pick up all those amazing looks), and a post show soirée!

I love that the models will be wearing all Santana Row fashions, including: Anthropologie, Cole Haan, Furla and Blue Jeans Bar to name a few. 7PM: I watch the models strut fab moda. 8PM: I buy and strut my new fab moda! Style that is locally accessible, and relatively inexpensive is my kind of show stopping fashion!

I of course will be doing full show coverage of what I see, and who I see on Friday just for you! So expect a full update next week. As I pack up my Louboutins, and black fashion week garb, my little vogued out heart is pitter pattering with anticipation…..
Now, whenever I go to Williamsburg, I marvel at all the people, restaurants, high-rise condos, and, yes, the stores. I spent Saturday afternoon shopping in the ‘burg with my friend MK, a seasoned Williamsburg resident, and to celebrate the two-days-early arrival of our respective paychecks, she took me to some of her regular haunts. A great thing about shopping in the outer boroughs, where rents are more affordable than in Manhattan, is that stores can be more selective and specialized with their merchandise, without charging an arm and a leg for it. One of my favorite shops we hit was Catbird, a tiny jewel box of a store, offering quirky jewelry and home accessories like candles. The shop has an antiquey feel, with the jewelry housed in curio-type cabinets along the walls. I should mention that they were having a sale when I was there; select items were 40% off. True to my nature, I fell in love with an item that wasn’t on sale: this Lusca ring by Brooklyn-based jeweler Digby & Iona (Catbird has a similar, albeit smaller, style, the Seppie ring, on their website). The Lusca is an octopus with a hammered, vintage look; it’s oversized, and its tentacles extend out over your other fingers. It’s definitely a statement piece, but it doesn’t scream cocktail ring–it’s more like you found it in the bottom of a trunk or in your great-grandmother’s jewelry box. At $280, it’s not necessarily a bargain, but considering its size and that it comes in sterling silver (or matte vermeil), I think it’s worth a little splurge. Unique jewelry like this doesn’t go out of style, and considering its unusual look, it could definitely become a signature piece. Hopefully it will still be there by the time my next paycheck arrives.

By Carlina Harris

To all the style aficionados out there: thank you, you make the world a beautiful, fashionable place! Fun to look at and even better to live in! Our time has come my dear well accessorized ladies and gents, New York Fashion Week is upon us in less than eight days. Cue the models, makeup artist’s and last minute crazed and dazed designers. No, I did not get any invite’s this year (I die, I’m dying), and will not be in New York for all the festivities (tears). One day I promise you this, I will be front row center (maybe if I became Lindsay Lohan’s new girlfriend) one day! But until then I will be continue to report fashion trends, down from earth.

This upcoming fall season is going to be a chilly one. Swaddle yourselves in cashmere, preventing frost bite, boot up in Hunters to prepare for the torrential Bay Area downpours, watch out kiddies there is a fashion blizzard ahead!

brrrrr………….

When it comes to fashion followers, devotees are becoming younger and younger, can you say Suri Cruise NYC Prep, those kids have it all, wrapped up in a Louis Vuitton bunny ear-ed bow. Whether you are, or shop for a hormonal adolescent keep these four ongoing trends in mind when you are shopping.

Boho Chic: This updated and modern bohemian look replaces the bell bottoms and earthy looks from years past with destroyed skinny denim, folk-inspired fringe vests, shaggy faux fur vests and hobo fringe bags and shoes. The current times have brought back this trend but its new age focus is funky, edgy and light hearted.

Destroyed Denim– Not just a whole in the knee; the entire jean is shredded for an updated look. These jeans are distressed with holes straight off the rack. They’ll look like they’ve been worn for years.

More fall fashion trends this way, after the jump…

MOTO: Tough motorcycles look; ripped jeans, leather jackets, vests. It won’t just be bikers who are wearing motorcycle jackets. This is a great style to invest in because it’s so versatile. Guys and girls are adding studs and metal accents to belts and shoes for the rock n’ roll look.

Plaid: Not your grandpa’s plaid. This revisited classic uses buffalo check and argyle patterns with fun, bright colors to make the look stand out. Classy and cool .

Amid the sea of black on the fall runways were bursts of bright and bold geometric prints. Ready to rock this trend? We’ve found six printed fall items for under $250.

Bold prints are fun, daring, and always stylish – but they can easily go wrong. A good rule to go by is the one of proportions: if you’re thin or petite, wear small prints. If you’re tall or plus-size, wear bigger prints. Also, if you’re wearing a printed top, it’s best to go with solid pants and shoes. Here are six of our favorite geometric prints for under $250:

A printed tank with jeans and heels makes a cute “going out” outfit, and a printed skirt or dress with black tights will make you stand out at any event. While the little black dress will always be a staple, printed items are way more unique!
