Easily Chic Hair: The Top Knot Bun

In years past, a messy bun piled high atop one’s head may have been the exact opposite of chic, but today, a top knot is totally acceptable and stylish. The good news is, anyone can achieve this look with minimal effort.

Here are a few tips for getting it right:

Step 1: Wash and dry hair as usual.

Step 2: Apply a thickening spray starting at the roots of your hair, all the way to the ends. Unite Tricky Lite ($31) is a good option.

Step 3: Flip head over and brush hair into a high pony tail. Secure with a non-damaging rubberband. I like these basic black ones by Scunci ($3).

Step 4: Twist hair into a circular bun and securing with bobby pins.

Step 5: Tame flyaways with UNITE Session Max Hairspray ($29.95).

Voila! In just seconds, you’ve achieved the perfect effortless look.

Dry Summer Days Beg for Shielo’s Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner

Shielo Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner

You know the routine: wash, blowdry, flat iron, hairspray, repeat. All the hair products and heat styling we do to our hair make for dry brittle strands at the end of the day. Throw in hot summer weather and it’s a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, Shielo’s got you covered with their Hydrate line. I recently tried out the duo and they have quickly become some of my favorites. The Moisturizing Shampoo uses organic ingredients to saturate hair with intense moisturizers. It not only moisturizes with each shampoo, but it helps to keep hair soft and supple between washings.

Sheilo’s Hydrate line contains UV protectants to help guard hair from the sun’s damaging and color-compromising effects. Bonus!

HYDRATE Vibrancy Conditioner uses plant proteins and hydrating peptides to lock in moisture and protect color. Together the combo leaves hair deeply moisturized and healthy.

Shielo products also use organic ingredients, and cost way less than your typical designer shampoo. I am also a huge fan of Shielo’s COLOR PROTECT line for color treated hair.

5 Style-Extending Products For Hot Summer Hair!

  • posted June 1st, 2011
  • Beauty

If you’re one of those effortless messy bun or haphazard ponytail types during the summer, or are fortunate enough to have low-maintenance hair that allows you to just jump out of the shower and bolt out the door, I don’t blame you for having a casual, little-effort approach towards hot-weather hair. After all, the summer heat, humidity, and damaging sun can really take its toll on a more carefully-constructed coif. But that doesn’t mean it’s okay for your hair to fall flat when you do take the extra time and effort to make your hair look special for an occasion. To combat the destructive factors that can wreak havoc on your summer ‘do, I’ve compiled 5 of the best style-extending hair products to keep your look intact!

If you’re looking to boost limp curls, get your hands on Kiehl’s Weightless Curl Defining Spray, which gives you that naturally tousled look all day long without making your hair feel weighed-down or sticky, or alternatively, keep that flat-iron work fresh, no heat required, with Living Proof Straight Spray! To battle humidity all around, no matter what your style, spritz hair with Alterna Bamboo Anti-Humidity Hair Spray, or Blow’s protein-infused Non-Stick Hair Spray which keeps your flouncy blow-out looking fresh no matter how sweltering the summer heat! And finally, keep hair shiny, lush, and color-rich all summer long with Alterna’s Sun Recovery Spray, which infuses moisture into sun-dried hair and keeps your color on lock!

Braids Like Jennifer Aniston, Amanda Seyfried

Get the Celebrity Look

Celebrity hair trends can be notoriously tricky, but there’s something refreshing about the braid trend. Maybe it’s the fact that we’re revisiting something that’s often utilized as a casual, messy look (gym hair for the party? cool!), or perhaps I just have nostalgia for the braid. Either way, here are five ways to wear braids this summer, inspired by celeb snaps.

Let’s get braiding!

The Amanda Seyfried I: Amanda Seyfried once went for a classic French braid, and it looked absolutely amazing. With nothing to distract from her blue eyes, this style lets her natural beauty take center stage.

The Amanda Seyfried II: A fat and messy fishtail braid is another look to try, and it’s great for hair that tends to get a little bit fuzzy. If you love the braid and must try it with a fancy dress, the fishtail (or fishbone) braid is one of the glammest braids around.

The Zoe Saldana: Take those braids up high! Zoe’s worn braids twisted right up over her head, Heidi-style, and it’s a fantastic way to get your hair off your neck this summer. Be sure that you have enough bobby pins before you try to pull this one off!

The Ziyi Zang: Your loose braid can also work well as a bun–another way to keep your hair off your neck. Ziyi Zang’s braid was tucked into a bun, which gave her a classic vibe. Smart and easy!

The Jennifer Aniston: Pull your hair to the side before you braid your hair, and don’t be afraid to let strands fall out of the braid. Aniston wore this casual look in Hawaii, and a lot of wisps were escaping. She looked great!

Are you a fan of the braid trend, or is it not a look for you? Will you try it this summer?

Summer Hair Suggestions for you

Are you in the mood for summer hair that’s easy and quick? Me too! My fast five-minute hair is going to save me some time in the morning from now on, and I can’t complain about that! Here are a few of my top styles to try for summer.

I was recently checking out Allure mag, and they listed their top fast hairstyles. Some of them were absolutely great, and they’re what inspired me to list mine below!

*The Under-Braid: When your hair hasn’t been washed in a day or so, this style sticks perfectly. Brush or detangle your hair and braid it with the strands going under instead of over. It’s a tidier braid style that helps keep flyaways in check.

*The Half-Up Twist: Take your hair out of its messy night braid, ponytail, or bun, and add a little gel + mousse mix to smooth. Take the top half of your hair as if you are going to create a half-up, half-down look, but instead of simply clipping it, twist it for added volume on top. You can use bobby pins and/or a clear elastic to secure.

*The Brand-New Part: Get fresh volume by parting your hair on the side, or in the middle if your usual part is already over there. By changing your part just an inch or two, you can get lift where you usually don’t. I love to combine this look with a braid or a headband.

*Ponytail Braid: Sick of re-doing your braid in the middle of the day? Aim for a look that keeps all those wisps at bay. The ponytail braid should start with a high, slicked ponytail, and then you braid it all the way down and secure with an elastic.

*Down and Tousled: A little texturizing product and a blast of hair spray can work wonders on a head of naturally wavy hair. Try drawing one side of your hair up with a decorative bobby pin or clasp after side-parting.

If you have any others, pop them in the comments!

Keep Your Hair On Guard With These Heat Protecting Products!

As a girl who loves the outdoors, especially in the summer months, I’ve been plenty educated about proper protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Believe it or not, while you may compulsively slather yourself with sunblock every time you leave your house, you might not be completely protected — your hair needs sunscreen too! Heat-damaged hair is dry, brittle, and is more easily split (sound familiar?), so unless you cap off with a big floppy hat every time you step foot outdoors (let’s face it — they’re not that versatile), it’s time  you got your hair the protection it deserves!

Heat protecting hair products are this summer’s must-have beauty pick for your ‘do. Not only do they ward off harmful UV rays, but they also help eliminate frizz and enhance shine, giving you a style that’s more defined and healthier! And for girls who can’t live without their blow-dryer and flat iron, these products also help to protect against damaging heat for your beautifying appliances! Instead of getting dried out and rendered useless by heat, these picks are actually thermal activated to ensure your locks are on beauty lockdown, whether they’re up against a scorching flat iron or just your average heat wave day!
