Summer Sophistication Done Right, Thanks To Max Studio!

While we ladies in San Francisco can hardly complain about extreme weather, my summer vacations visiting family in Connecticut have taught me enough to know that when the weather gets really hot, you rarely want to get out of the pool, let alone get dressed up and wear real clothes. But the truth is, you don’t have to suffer to look sharp when it’s sweltering outside (contrary to popular belief, pain isn’t always beauty), and the newest Spring/Summer lookbook from Max Studio is chock-ful of comfy-chic pieces that manage to ooze sophistication without making you feel miserable! The key is to find stylish summer staples in lightweight, breathable, weather-friendly fabrics like linen and cotton, and of course, exposing skin to stay cool while still keeping it classy! Opt for a pair of goes-with-everything linen shorts, and a drape-y top that looks luxe but feels as comfy as your favorite tee. And of course, don’t underestimate the need for a lightweight summer jacket – this linen blazer-style jacket goes a long way in boosting the sophistication scale without making you break a sweat!

Make The Most of Your Summer Maxi Dress Look With The Perfect Accessories From SSENSE!

This season, it’s all about the ever-flowing summer maxi dress. But how do you take the simple, effortless warm-weather staple and turn it into something that’s unforgettably statement-making? It’s all about choosing the right accessories, which will help elevate the look from something you just threw on to the epitome of casual summer glamour! First off, given the maxi dress’s voluminous shape, you want to make sure you do your curves justice – cinch your dress in at the waist with a coordinating belt, which will also serve to add some on-trend edge to your otherwise super-feminine look. Furthermore, maxi dresses look best on vertically-gifted girls, but if you’re not supermodel-tall, don’t fret – fake it by sporting some sky-high platform sandals to add the illusion of extra height! And last but not least, complete the look with the perfect floppy sun hat, so you can beat the rays while also giving off the perfect dash of boho-chicness! You’ll find these and more summer styles at SSENSE.

Lace Tanks For Sexy Summer Layering!

Lace overlays and pretty sheer details grew increasingly popular over the course of last fall and winter, providing a sophisticated take on sexy lingerie-inspired pieces. Leaving enough to the imagination but still with plenty of sultry femininity, neutral lace dresses, tops, and even pumps and leggings served to put an updated spin on the classic textured material. Luckily for those of us fashionistas who can’t get enough of the pretty sheer trend, summer is putting its own updates on the look with pretty prints like floral and polka dots, as well as poppy summer-festive colors. Lace tanks make for the perfect summer layering pieces – wear them over a solid cami or bralette, or under a lightweight cardigan or floral blazer… or even throw them on over a swimsuit with a pair of denim cut-offs for an on-trend swim cover-up! It’s the perfect way to add some instant girliness to any casual summer outfit!

The Latest Trend in Denim is White-Hot!

Sadly, white denim is a phrase that often evokes terror among even the most daring fashion gurus. I mean, for starters, it’s not even Memorial Day yet… and don’t even get me started on the danger of sitting anywhere that’s short of immaculately clean (that means no sunbathing on the lawn)! But don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to persuade you to avoid white denim this season! When done right, white jeans are clean, sexy, leg-lengthening, and undeniably summer-festive. And of course, it goes with everything! From skinny and cropped to relaxed boyfriend styles, our favorite denim brands are embracing this white-hot trend to balance spring’s in-your-face colored jeans and whimsical printed patterns. If you’ve got the guts to rock white denim this spring and summer season, don’t bother waiting until the unnamed “fashion gods” say it’s appropriate – start rockin’ the look ASAP!

Turquoise Must Haves for Summer

The big color this season is turquoise. Everyone needs to own some turquoise this season. The color is gorgeous and looks great against a great summer tan. Every gal must have a jacket, bag, bracelet, watch, skinny jeans, and necklace in their summer ensemble and what better way to complete your summer outfits than with a pop of turquoise color.

One of my all time favorite bags is the Rebecca Minkoff Mac bag and this season she did it in turquoise with whipstitching to make it extra special. Get the Rebecca Minkoff Whipstitch bag in turquoise for $330 from

A great turquoise jacket can go over a white dress and sandals and make the outfit extra special for weddings and graduations that are coming up. My personal favorite is the turquoise Rebecca Minkoff Becky Jacket for $328 from

If you want to wear a great turquoise bracelet with your watch why not get a great turquoise chain and watch together from La Mer Collections. They make great watches that have a classic tank face with leather straps and add a little something different like a chain or some charms and suddenly you have a great watch that has everything you need so you can put it on and run out the door in the am looking well accessorized. La Mer Collections Turquoise Crystal Chain Wrap Watch for $165 from Sale On! Save up to 70% off new styles at

If you want to get on the colored denim trend, turquoise skinny jeans like these Topshop skinny MOTO leigh jeans are a great option for $78 from

For a great piece of turquoise jewelry, the piece to get is the OLIVIA COLLINGS ANTIQUE JEWELRY Gold & Turquoise Pave Bangle for $4,595 from Barneys New York. The piece is a one of a kind vintage piece made of 9k yellow gold. It is a hinged bangle with pave set turquoise from circa 1860. This is a collector’s piece and if you are a turquoise lover, get this piece to go with all your summer outfits.

A great turquoise necklace option to go with your white tunic tops and those great turquoise moto skinny jeans is the Michael Kors gold tone multi chain turquoise bead necklace for $145 from Macys.

Some years great colors like turquoise are just not available in lots of jewelry and clothing. This season is a big year for turquoise and it is a great year to collect all your favorite pieces so you can wear them all throughout the season and beyond when the color may be harder to find in such great pieces.

Beat The Heat With These Neon-Accented Sunglasses!

I know it seems counterproductive to beat the sun’s blinding rays with a pair of even more blindingly bright sunglasses, but sometimes fashion surpasses all logic aside! After all, these super-cool neon shades are hard to pass up! If you haven’t already noticed, it’s going to be pretty hard to avoid eye-popping neons for the upcoming spring season so far, so even if you’re not much of a nu-raver – or still consider the 90s to be the worst decade ever (*gasp!*) – you might as well embrace the trend and use it to your own advantage. After all, neon looks awesome against a summer glow, so if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! To pull off this trend without looking like you bounced off the stage of Kids Incorporated (remember that show?), or worse – like you just bought your accessories from the local 99 cent store, the key is to stick to fashion-forward silhouettes or strategic neon detailing, so the look is edgy and chic instead of dated, stale, or cheap. For example, these GaGa-esque square shades are white hot, with the perfect dash of neon orange just at the sides. These circular-framed Karen Walker sunnies and Emporio Armani aviators take a similar ‘less is more’ approach when it comes to neon, keeping their highlighter yellow details to just the side panels. And if you’re willing to embrace the neon-framed trend head-on with all-over neon, try out these Kate Spade Florence Broadhurst cat-eye frames for a sexy retro-modern look!

How High Can You Go? 3 Super-Cute High-Waisted Shorts

Unless you’re a gal who happens to have that rare and enviable ability to take on any trend and seamlessly make it her own, fashion crisis-free, chances are that the thought of rocking a pair of high-waisted shorts if a bit daunting. How high is too high? Will I look like Steve Urkel? Do these shorts make my butt look big? Not everyone has a knack for simply selecting a pair off the shelf and making them work, so I’ve rounded up a few pairs to get you started on the trend. While they’re certainly not for the girl who’s self-conscious of her curves, high-waisted shorts have some unique advantages: they can camouflage in a tummy (just like high-waisted shorts, low rise shorts aren’t for everybody, either!), they make cropped blouses wearable without sporting a bare midriff, and they allow for easy shirt-tucking if that’s the look you’re going for. Start out simple with a dark solid pair, like these J. Crew buckle shorts, or test the snaky waters with a modestly printed pair like these Wes Gordon High-Waisted Python Shorts. And once the weather really heats up, don’t forget to go for a effortlessly cool linen pair like these Paper Crown Corsica shorts!

Pleated Skirts, Not Just For The Tennis Court!

  • posted September 30th, 2011
  • Fashion

While free-flowing maxi skirts and skin-tight bandage sheaths have ruled the trend report for the past couple summer months, it’s time to wrap up this year’s heat wave with a different sort of mini – the pleated skirt! Pleats may have a reputation of being too preppy, regularly reserved for school uniforms and the tennis court, but these new takes on the style prove that pleats have a place in the season’s trend watch! From silky micro-pleats like this Marilyn Monroe-esque Club Monaco skirt to more structured wool-blended versions like this Philip Lim 3.1 skirt, which is perfect to pair with a pair of tights when the weather gets chillier, pleats can be surprisingly versatile, transitioning from day to night and summer to fall, depending on the look you’re going for! Add a dash of clean-cut preppiness to rocker-chick leather with this Alice + Olivia skirt that toes the line between straight-laced and edgy, and jump on-board the everlasting colorblocked trend with this Alexander McQueen mini. Whether you’re looking for an office or a party look, it’s time to consider welcoming pleats into your wardrobe!
