We’ve seen a lot of asymmetry on things like shoulder dresses, and that trend seems to be carrying on into autumn and winter, but as the weather gets colder, even more casual clothes are showing signs that even though the fabrics are getting warmer and more skin is covered, taking sides is still very much in.

Everyone needs a good supply of errand-running clothes for those rainy and snowy winter days when high fashion just isn’t practical, but just because something is casual doesn’t have to mean it’s ugly.  The solution is an asymmetrical striped cardigan. I love this C&C California Hooded Striped Cardigan from Shopbop  – it’s bold yet casual and you could either pair with the  a pair of black skinny jeans and some black boots for outings a little more formal than just running up to the post office.

Keep Cozy with a Chunky Knit Sweater

Here’s a dilemma: chunky knit is going to be really big this winter, and in fact I’m already seeing it all over the shops.  This is great, especially if you live in a place where it gets cold and snowy in the winter.  The problem is that if, like me, you happen not to be rail-thin and small-busted, chunky clothes are not usually the recommended choice.  Often when I put on a chunky sweater that looks great on the hanger, it just makes me look like a big tank… not a pretty look.

But the thing is, chunky doesn’t have to mean shapeless or dumpy.  You can find chunky knits that are tailored with a flattering shape for curvy girls too. Belted styles help to define your waist and prevent you from looking sloppy.  If that really doesn’t suit your style, then you can confine your chunky knit wear to accessories – a chunky knit scarf would be perfect.

We found this adorable Diane von Furstenberg Chunky Wool Sweater, $375 at Nordstrom.com. Sweet!

Old Navy
is a great place to stock up on basics for back to school.  For under $35 you can put together a whole outfit for girls. With jeans priced at $14.50, a cardigan sweater to ward off the fall chill ($15) and basic tees that have a touch of style with a puff sleeve for only $4 you’ll be able to splurge on some fun accessories or cute shoes!

For boys, long sleeve tees priced at $9.50 can be worn under summer tees or polos ($7) for a layered look.  Boys jeans start at $14 a pair when you buy two or more.

Don’t forget socks- a great price at $4 for a pack of three when you buy 2 or more packages. Whether the dog runs off with them or the dryer mysteriously “eats” them, you can never have too many!
