Jason Wu For Target Lookbook Revealed!

  • posted January 22nd, 2012
  • Fashion

One of the most anticipated designer-for-less collections since Jimmy Choo for H&M is fast approaching, and now we can finally take a nice, long look at some of the show-stopping pieces from the upcoming Jason Wu for Target collection – due out February 5th. With everything from separates and dresses to bags and scarves, our first gander at Jason Wu’s looks for less certainly doesn’t disappoint, and we’re excited to get our hands on the wallet-friendly fashion fare… that is, as long as it doesn’t crash the website like Missoni’s collection did! Considering prices range from $19.99 to $59.99, the looks manage to appear much more polished and luxe than their bargain friendliness may suggest, and we’re personally loving that they provide a chic throwback feel with their high necklines and modest prints, but still boast an undeniable modern flair with the sheer details, mix-and-match prints, and nipped-at-the-waist silhouettes. What do you think – are you impressed by the on-off collection’s offerings, or were you expecting more from Mr. Wu and Target?

thefind ikea cb2 target modern contemporary furniture

We’ve all seen them. Those uber-stylish homes with rooms that look like art exhibits, all done up by top designers and featured in the pages of magazines. And in our dreams.

But does a chair really have to cost as much as rent to look good? And do you have to be a socialite to like the space you live in? Uhh, no. With a little smart shopping, even the most magazine-ready contemporary style is within reach.

For instance, modern light fixtures like this IKEA Knappa pendant could easily cost triple-digits, but you’ll feel really bright only shelling out $50 for just as much look. Even “designer” dinnerware can be the talk of your table for far less than anyone would guess: CB2′s 42-piece set includes literally everything from place-mats to glasses to flatware for four. Last but not least, seat your guests on Target’s take on mid-century modern design. Their stacking chairs come in a variety of colors and at only $65 for a set of two, feel free to invite even some more people to be impressed.

Buy it: Converse One Star

Within the last year or so, being a fashion blogger has become a hot commodity, so much that designers, beauty companies, and a host of other entities now hold special events just for bloggers. After years of toiling in anonymity, I must say, it’s pretty nice to be wined, dined, and swagged. Of all the events that I attend, however, my favorite tend to involve getting the chance to style looks. It’s like playing dress-up in someone else’s closet, and my ego likes taking a fashion brand’s wares and putting my own stamp on it. So of course I jumped at the chance to assemble a few looks from Converse One Star‘s spring 2011 collection last week. As you may or may not know, Converse One Star is sold exclusively at Target, and has a ton of casual, urban-cool basics that are perfect for the weekend. Below are the looks I created (and, yes, they had me pose with them, so while I’m normally not a post-pictures-of-myself blogger, well, here I am); the best part is that you can shop them right now on Target.com.

Look 1: Kristen Stewart runs errands
Don’t laugh, but I saw this trench coat and thought of Kristen Stewart in various paparazzi photos, where she looks boyish but cute, like she’s borrowing Robert Pattinson’s clothes. I wanted to contrast the tailored but low-key look of the trench coat with slouchier sweatpants. As a nod to the Forks, Washington weather, I layered the look with a lace-trim tank underneath a button-down. I also added a fashion-y wide belt on top of the trench, because adding a random belt instantly gives you a fashiony look, and it prevents everything from looking too relaxed.

Isla Trench Coat, $49.99
3/4 Sleeve Sport Shirt, $22.99
Lace Trim Tank, $12.99
Leisure Cropped Pant, $22.99
Accessories unavailable online.

Look 2: Rick Owens lite
This photograph does not do this jacket justice (It also doesn’t do me justice, but let’s ignore that for now)–it’s super-soft, super-lightweight, and it looks way more expensive than it is. It has that biker-lite vibe that’s been happening for a few seasons now, so I decided to take a cue from Rick Owens and layer it with two tank tops and a drapey jersey vest (also a great piece, but sadly not yet available online). The skinny jeans have motocross-inspired stitching details, continuing the vaguely outlaw-ish vibe. I finished with a big shoulder bag and several strands of snake-like silver necklaces to dress it up a little. Again, this is a pretty casual look, but it’s my favorite of the three.

Roxie Jacket, $34.99
Lace Trim Tank Tops, $12.99 each
Skinny Jeans, Dark Wash, $29.99
Vest and accessories unavailable online.

Look 3: mixing it up
I decided to get a little crazy on my third and final look (as evidenced by my pensive expression here), so I pulled one of my favorite tricks, which is mixing patterns. This is actually a peasant top over a dress, and I added a belt to create a waist. For some reason, I feel like mixing patterns is easier with warm-weather clothes; the key is to 1) pair a larger-scale pattern with a smaller one, and 2) to keep it all in the same color family. I think you could wear this to work, but it would also be a cute weekend brunch outfit. I’ll have eggs benedict and a bellini.

Plaid Miriam Top, $24.99
Dress and accessories unavailable online.

FTC disclosure: I was compensated for my mad styling skillz with a Target gift card, although I had so much fun, I would’ve done it for free.

MasstigeWatch: +J, Swedish Hasbeens for H&M, Calypso for Target & more

Just when I thought I was Masstiged out, there are some new and exciting collaborations to look forward to this year. First up, more details have emerged on Calypso for Target, and Racked has word that, based on the press preview, it looks very promising. First of all, this is a “lifestyle” collaboration, a la Liberty of London last year, so there are clothes and accessories, plus items for children and the home, all with Calypso’s signature bohemian-bourgeois aesthetic. Racked also notes that–haleluah!–the collection is heavy on soft cotton voile with some silk and linen thrown in. As you guys know, my biggest complaint about the Target lines tends to be about the janky fabrics, so this is welcome news. And all for $1.99-$59.99! My calendar is marked for May 1st–May Day indeed!

Also hitting stores May 1st is Sophie Theallet’s line for Nine West, which is actually part of a bigger initiative called…wait for it…Shoelaborations. According to WWD[subscription required], Theallet’s line will be priced similarly to Nine West’s usual fare ($79-$109), and she’ll be followed by Giles Deacon in fall 2011. (Whenever I hear of Giles Deacon, I think of Henry Holland’s cheeky “Get your freak on Giles Deacon” T-shirt. But I digress.) Of the images released so far–a straw bag and an espadrille-ish heel–the line looks very summery and chic. Which, considering the weather outside, is practically making my mouth water.

In even more exciting shoe news, H&M is collaborating with Swedish Hasbeens, a line of which I am quite fond. No boots–this is a summer line–but lots of chic sandals, and at just $59.99-$69.99, they’re less than a third of what the real deal costs.Fashionista has photos of the entire collection, which hits H&M stores on April 20; I have my eye on these strappy red sandals.

Finally, if you just can’t wait till spring to get your Masstige on, Racked has the full scoop on the latest +J collection, which hit Uniqlo stores this morning. Word is that it’s selling briskly and heavy on Egyptian cotton. As they say, shop early and shop often…

Frugal Fashion: Dolce Vita for Target Black Sniptoe Flat for $14.98

  • posted February 1st, 2011
  • Fashion

Dolce Vita is known for their effortlessly stylish, flirty footwear. Once a well-kept Southern California secret, it didn’t take long for the fashion conscious to discover the classic cool designs. Thus, making Dolce Vita the go-to brand for on-trend shoe designs each season. Dolce Vita has teamed up with Target to create a few amazing shoe collections. The once high-end exclusive to boutiques brand has made itself available and  affordable to the masses nationwide. The initial Winter 2010 collection for Target was very much buzzed about among the fashion blogosphere and even had an exclusive release at the Target Harlem store. Target first showcased their remarkable Spring 2011 Dolce Vita for Target designs online  - And now that line is on sale!

My fabulous frugal find is the Dolce Vita for Target Sniptoe Flat in Black and it’s going for a mere $14.98! Originally sold at $29.99, the simple studded, ballet influenced number, is perfect for stashing in the car or on-the-go in your favorite hobo handbag.  At almost half its original price, you can afford to give your feet a break from heels.  Your toes and wallet will thank you for it!

Calypso St. Barth Designer Collaboration with Target Launches May 1st

  • posted January 14th, 2011
  • Fashion

We’re thrilled to learn that Calypso St. Barth is coming to Target in May. It’s also making me want to jet off to a tropical isle. Judging from how inexpensive Target’s Calypso St. Barth line is, I might be able to afford it. Target notes the collection will be “timed perfectly for summer” and I completely agree. The brand truly is a summer, beachy brand.

Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston do seem pretty obsessed with Calypso St. Barth’s relaxed beachy style. Anyone who frequents the Hamptons will recognize Christianne Celle’s style from her eponymous shops and is going to want to raid the racks. Target’s senior vice president of merchandising says, “Calypso St. Barth is a renowned global brand with an incredibly loyal following and we think Target’s guests will love the no-fuss, sophisticated appeal of the collection.”

If you’re not totally into Calypso St. Barth’s clothing, you might enjoy the home decor collection they’re bringing to Target. Of course, it will give you the perfect items to accessorize your beach house. I’m very excited to see what the glassware is like. All the items in the Calypso St. Barth collection for Target will run between $1.99 and $79.99, so it’s much more affordable than buying the actual label.

Do you think Calypso St. Barth for Target will sell out as quickly as Target’s other designer collaborations have? Will you be running to the racks on May 1?
