NYFW Runway Report: Tory Burch Fall 2011

  • posted February 23rd, 2011
  • Fashion

When & Where: Sunday, February 13 at 2:15 p.m., the Studio, Lincoln CenterRunway Recap: For fall, Tory Burch continued the jaunt through the ’70s that she began for spring, but this time it was by way of merry old England, as evidenced by a rich mix of patterns, plaid, tweed, and velvet, sometimes all in one look. The collection was more polished and dressed up than last season, but everything still retained that eclectic, carefree vibe that Tory is known for. In silhouette news,  her skirts hovered between the knee and midcalf, and she showed multiple great pantsuit looks–fueling my hope that next fall will mark the return of the trouser. After all, if anyone can bring pants back, it’s Tory Burch.

Standout Look: I like a designer who takes a strong point of view, and what really made me take notice were several pairs of ultra-wide-leg pleated palazzo pants–some solid, some patterned, all very fluid and gorgeous. They almost look like maxi skirts while standing still, but in motion, they have a beautifully fluid movement. This particular look was my favorite instance of the pants–I like the casual jacket and the neck scarf, and, well, this just looks like something I’d wear.

Bonus Points: When I saw the superlong check-in line for this show, I thought, “Oh, no.” But the presentation was actually quite innovative–it was a continuous loop of a runway show (it ran four times total; I was in the first group), and the audience could come or go as they wished (or as the security guards would allow). It was all the good parts of a runway show (like seeing the clothes in motion) with none of the bad parts (waiting 30 minutes for it to start, assigned seating). And after I dashed out to my next show, apparently I missed Kanye West.Where to Buy: Find a boutique near you.

Slip On a Pair of Ultra-Stylish Designer Flip-Flops

  • posted February 1st, 2011
  • Fashion

For those of us with the hard-to-please combination of finicky fashion taste and a hectic busy schedule, it can be difficult to find the perfect summer shoe that maintains a sense of upscale style while still allowing you to get up and go at a moment’s notice. Luckily for us label-loving ladies (who still happen to have a low-maintenance side), many of our favorite designers have created a slew of stunning flip-flops perfect for sun-basking, pool-lounging, and of course, last-minute errand-running when we want something we can slip on quickly without looking sloppy! Opt for something practical that goes with everything, but still lets you show off a little character like these Marc by Marc Jacobs flip-flops or the ever-popular Tory Burch Thora Sandals, which come in a multitude of colors and textures to suit your own personal style. Opt for a spring-festive pop of color like these Diane von Furstenberg ‘Lush’ sandals in turquoise or yellow, or stand out with intricate embellishments like these Giuseppe Zanotti Stone Sandals, or the very whimsical Miss Trish Splash ‘Eva’ Flip Flops!

Color Therapy: Brighten Up with a Red Handbag

With winter’s dreary weather has me longing for Spring’s brightest hues. I feel like my wardrobe consists of tons of black, grey and navy. First order of business to brighten things up: the Red Handbag. What better way to lighten the mood than with a pop of color on your arm. Whether it’s crimson, candy apple or tomato, a red bag is the appropriate hiccup in the pattern of our every day wardrobe.

Can’t Get Enough: Long-Sleeved Mini Dresses

*Jessica Alba, Lauren Conrad, Vanessa Hudgens*

There is no question that long-sleeved mini-dresses are hot this season. Celebrities like Jessica Alba, Katy Perry and Kristen Stewart have all been seen rocking the trend. There is nothing like a mini-dress to make your legs look miles long. And while it’s sexy to show some skin, we love the look of a long-sleeved mini-dress. Short enough to elongate legs, but still covered up on top. The look is a bit 60′s retro, but modernized by interesting fabrics and cuts.

*Sarah Jessica Parker, Katy Perry, Drew Barrymore*

*Cameron Diaz, Kristen Stewart, Gwyneth Paltrow*

Metallic panels give this (1) Mike Gonzalez Bourdin Silk Pyramid Jacquard Dress, $304, a futuristic feel that would be perfect for your next cocktail party. Navy sequin stripes dress up (2) Tory Burch’s Athazer Dress, $595. The nude fabric and body-con fit of this (3) M Missoni Crocodile Intarsia Mini Dress, $595, is meant for the daring. But when paired with opaque tights and ankle boots, it gets a bit more wearable. Lace adds a romantic touch to the (4) Valerie Dress by Rachel Rachel Roy, and at $139 + an extra 30% off, it’s affordable too. Would look great paired with a pair of tough motorcycle boots. 3D fabric takes the (5) Luc by Lucy Wave Wynona Dress, $88, to a whole new level, and the jewel-tone hue is so luxe. Finally, (6)Opening Ceremony’s Tubular Mini Dress, $345, is a more casual take on the sweater dress. We’d live in this and wear it alone or with leggings.

What’s your take on this trend?

Cheryl Shops Runway Review: Tory Burch Spring 2011

  • posted September 15th, 2010
  • Fashion

Where & When: Wednesday, September 15 at 9 a.m., the Studio, Lincoln Center

Runway Recap: The two main stories this Fashion Week have been Minimalism and ’70s; count Tory Burch in the latter camp. Her spring collection was a colorful mix, incorporating bright orange, canary yellow, and pale pink, with navy, khaki, and cream mixed in–and as with all of her collections, it was the perfect combination of preppy, ladylike, and bohemian. There were work-friendly collarless jackets and silk blouses, weekend-perfect linen dresses, and even some sequins for nighttime. The ’70s influence came across in colorful peasant dresses, midcalf skirts (the new length for spring), flared trousers, and even a Baja pullover (remember those?). Also on display: her bags, shoes, and jewelry, all of which are sure to please Tory loyalists and maybe convert a few new fans.
Standout Look: There were so many appealing looks in this collection, but I kept going back to this model in the printed blouse, yellow flared pants, and leather-and-canvas purse (which I am truly in love with). I had counted myself firmly in the skinny-pants camp, but these are the pair that just might make me a flare-leg convert.

Bonus Points:
Instead of doing a presentation in the cramped Box space, Tory opted for the larger Studio with, miracle of miracles, a raised runway. And just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, Kanye West and Anna Wintour arrived (not together), and Tory herself gave them a tour of the collection. Here’s the photographic proof.
