Retro-Fabulous Shades From Selima Sun For J. Crew!

Rain, shine, or snow, I rarely need an excuse to update my ever-growing collection of sunglasses (in fact, I get angry when certain stores “hibernate” their selection of shades for the winter), but now that it’s officially spring (and summer is fast-approaching!), the time is ripe for expanding your eyewear wardrobe! And luxury optics designer Selima Sun is making things easier for us indecisive girls with her limited-edition capsule collection with J. Crew! The just-released series features three different vintage-inspired styles (6 pairs in all) – the Lou, a 60s-inspired round design, the Sophia, a classic thick-framed cat-eye, and the Belle, a modern square style. The collection retails at a range of $115-128, so if you plan on indulging in these retro-modern shades (and you definitely should – before they’re gone for good!), be sure to keep them protected. I’m sure I’m not the only clumsy gal who has accidentally broken more than her share of pricey frames!

Add a Dab of Mustard to Your Winter Wardrobe

If the title of this post alone has your inner klutz shuddering from bad memories, I don’t blame you – normally, your outfit plus mustard equals a recipe for disaster. But forget what you know about impossible-to-lift stains and shift your attention to winter’s chic retro-inspired color palette. While the summer lent itself to wild prints and bold brights, this season is toning things down with more sophisticated takes on saturated solid hues. Mustard is a great start as it serves as a pop of color while also acting as a neutral – it goes with nearly anything and looks great on almost all skin tones. It’s a bit vintage-chic but with an updated twist, whether you’re rocking a mustard-colored pair of skinny cords or jazzing up your work outfit with a fierce pair of mustard pumps!

Retro Fabulous in Textured Tapestry Inspired Pieces!

If you’ve always considered yourself a bit of an “old soul,” with an undying love for all thing vintage and throwback-cool, this season is your time to shine! While chunky, cable-knit sweaters had us all going grandma-chic last year (in the most stylish way possible), this winter things are going similarly retro with tapestry-inspired prints. These pieces have that undeniable coziness of something that’s been worn in for just the right amount of time, but with a hint of quirkiness to give them a modern, updated edge. Invest in the perfect printed coat that stands out yet still manages to go with almost everything, or go boho-chic with a quilted satchel like this Vera Bradley Caitlyn in Day and Night. Cozy up in a warm woven scarf to add interest to an otherwise solid ensemble, or of course, try on a pair of on-trend tapestry-printed loafer flats to toe the line between retro and modern. Love to layer? A tapestry-printed dress like this one from Modcloth can be dressed up for winter by pairing with some cozy tights, the perfect riding boots, and a thick, comfy sweater!

Vintage Pick Of the Day: Vintage 1950s Playsuit and the Importance of Playdates

vintage 1950s playsuit

“If school days are the happiest of your life, I’m hanging myself with my skiprope tonight.” – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in a 1945 note to her boyfriend

Most of us can relate to Jackie O’s sentiments here, as we’ve all experienced the angst and heartbreak that comes with growing up. But we can also all relate to the joy we felt when school was finally out for the summer.

It’s a feeling that you miss when you’re working a 9-to-5 job or running your own business. With no institution-imposed calendar to tell you it’s time to play, it’s easy for play to get pushed waaaay down to the bottom of the to-do list or scrunched into a week vacation every year.

I worked with a personal coach recently and when she asked me to tell her what I did for fun, she listened to my list and replied, “That all sounds like work to me!”

After some coaxing, though, she convinced me that our bodies and our minds need playtime just as much today as they did when we were youngsters. In fact, these days it might be even more important!

So instead of just scheduling playdates for your kids, maybe it’s time you started scheduling playdates for you!

I’ve talked often about Julia Cameron’s Artist Dates before. These are one-hour weekly dates with yourself (just you, no children, spouses, or significant others allowed) where you get to play or explore or revisit things that bring you joy.

A bike ride. A museum exhibition. Building sand castles. Picking strawberries. A picnic in the park.

As we get older and take on more responsibilities, so much of what we love to do tends to go on our “someday” list. We’ll get back to it someday. We’ll do it tomorrow. Or next week.

I give you permission and challenge you to find an hour this week just for you.

Go play and see how energized you feel. See how your mind re-opens itself to new possibilities. See what ideas come flowing in when you’re not interrupted every few minutes or (seconds!) by family or co-workers.

And if you need even more inspiration to get into a playful, summer spirit, grab today’s VPOD, a sunny summer playsuit from the 1950s.

While you may not have many opportunities to wear these two pieces as a set, the bandeau top would look great under a crisp white blouse and the shorts just need a tee, some killer sandals and a few rockin’ accessories to take you on many a playdate.

It’s a fun summertime find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1940s Magic Carpet Blouse

vintage 1940s magic carpet blouse

Do you believe in magic?

Not the sleight of hand magic where coins disappear behind ears and pop out of noses or where ladies are sawed in half. I’m talking about the magic of life.

Are you still able to feel a sense of wonder when you see a butterfly or admire the perfection of a rose?

Are you able to feel enchantment when you meet just the right person at just the right time?

Are you fascinated by things like Masaru Emoto’s pictures of water crystals or how that one part in your favorite symphony still makes you tear up every single time?

If you’re the kind of person who isn’t afraid to wonder if perhaps there are greater and grander forces in the universe that we have yet to discover, then you will be delighted with today’s VPOD and it’s whimsical depiction of a bearded man sailing along on his flying carpet over minarets.

This vintage 1940s beaded blouse is a perfect example of why I find vintage clothing so magical.

And it can easily put a spell on any vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Tiffany Brooch

vintage 1970s tiffany moonstone and sapphire brooch

A few years ago, Martin Lindstrom, author of buy*ology, invited 600 women into a room to conduct a little experiment. He hooked them up to monitors and then brought out a bunch of Tiffany-blue colored boxes. And, lo and behold, the women’s heart rates immediately jumped 20%!

Now there was absolutely nothing in those boxes. They were all empty. But that didn’t matter. Good ol’ Tiffany’s has done such a great job of branding that we women immediately associate a box in their signature Tiffany-blue color with engagement, marriage and family. And that alone is enough to get our blood boiling!

So just imagine what would happen if you received a little blue Tiffany box and it had today’s VPOD tucked inside.

This vintage 1970s 14k gold Tiffany brooch features moonstone cabochon petals along with glistening sapphires.

And it’s quite a springtime treat for a vintage fashionista!

Vintage Pick Of the Day: Vintage Cole Gold Lame Swimsuit and Soul Surfer

vintage cole gold lame swimsuit 3

vintage cole gold lame swimsuit

soul surfer book

I have yet to see the movie Soul Surfer, which chronicles the true story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton, but I am so inspired by her courage and bravery.

Bethany entered her first surf competition at the age of eight. Thirteen years later, while surfing, she was attacked by a 14-ft tiger shark which bit off her left arm. Bethany battled to survive after losing 60% of her blood and underwent multiple operations.

And while most people would have given up surfing after this and considered it an end to their careers, Bethany miraculously survived, returned to her board a month later, and won her first National Title just a little over a year after her horrifying attack.

This story makes it seem a little silly to be afraid of someone noticing your not-so-perfect thighs when you wear your swimsuit, doesn’t it?

As for me, while I love being near water and around water, you’ll seldom find me in water or on water. And since I don’t enjoy swimming, diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, parasailing, or jetskiing, I can indulge in a swimsuit that is less athletic and far more glamorous like today’s VPOD.

This vintage Cole gold lame swimsuit is designed especially for landlubbing sun bathers who prefer the sand to the waves.

And it’s a glowing find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Givenchy Croquis Fashion Sketches

vintage givenchy croquis fashion illustrations

Do you ever dream of a world where you open your closet and all of your ready-to-wear clothes have been replaced by haute couture designs made especially for you?

Sure it’s a fantasy. After all, one haute couture gown might cost more than all the current clothes hanging in your closet combined. But there’s nothing to stop a girl from dreaming.

And if you’d like to take an interim step between your reality and your fantasy, you might want to consider treating yourself to one of today’s VPODs.

These vintage fashion sketches, or croquis, were all designed by Givenchy between 1980 and 1995 and include fabric swatches and design numbers. Originally given to a limited number of Givenchy clients at the Paris couture shows, these lovely sketches are now available to any gal who would like to frame them and gaze lovingly upon them daily.

They’re dreamy finds for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Alfred Shaheen Dress and Jacket

vintage alfred shaheen dress and jacket

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade! That’s what Alfred Shaheen did.

When he opened Shaheen’s of Honolulu in 1948, he had to keep a year’s worth of fabric on hand to protect against shipping delays and other unforeseen factors which hampered cash flow. Plus he often found himself settling for whatever fabrics were sent by the textile mills instead of what he had ordered.

So he boldly took matters into his own hands. He built his own equipment, sought out his own textile designers, hired workers to screenprint their designs and was soon producing 60,000 yards of fabric per month.

But not just any ol’ fabric with any ol’ designs in any ol’ colors.

No, no, no. Alfred Shaheen raised the bar!

All colors were applied by hand so they saturated the fabric. Workers had over 1,000 dye colors to choose from. And he refused to do “hash prints or chop suey prints.” Quality was the name of the game.

Perhaps that’s why Alfred Shaheen prints are still so popular today. And while sometimes the style of his dresses and maxi dresses can look dated, that’s definitely not the case with today’s VPOD.

This vintage Alfred Shaheen Asian-print dress and matching jacket could hold its own in any modern office.

It’s a top-notch find for a vintage fashionista!
