In Loving Memory...

Flag I am thankful for everyone who has ever fought for our country. It's a very noble position for someone to take, whether by choice and not, regardless, I am thankful. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who gave/lost their lives while fighting for our country. For me, I remember all our soldiers: the fallen, the veterans, the active duties, everyone. In my mind they are all heroes and need to be recognized regardless of what day it is.

On Saturday, I drove to San Francisco and on the way I saw a many Boy Scout troops placing flags on all the grave stones at a military cemetary. It was quite a site! There are thousands of headstones out there. By the time I drove by again, it was dark, so I didn't get to see if the Boy Scouts finished. I imagine that they did and that brings joy to my heart.

In loving memory...

Party Like It's 1999

Great news! Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this morning, so we're going to enjoy spring very soon. That's very exciting news! It was just a couple weeks ago that I was complaining about all the stores in malls carrying spring attire already. Perhaps that won't be an issue if spring really does hit soon.

Phil Apparently, the last time Phil didn't see his shadow was in 1999, therefore, I say we party like it's 1999 because we will be enjoying spring sooner this year and getting out of winter gloom. It has been a pretty easy winter, but I won't give up the sunshine for anything!

Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has a cute site dedicated to Phil and his history. I will leave you with this poem from their site...

Phil's official forecast as read 2/2/07 at 7:28 a.m. at Gobbler's Knob:

El Nino has caused high winds, heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the west.
Here in the East with much mild winter weather we have been blessed.

Global warming has caused a great debate.
This mild winter makes it seem just great.

On this Groundhog Day we think of one thing.
Will we have winter or will we have spring?

On Gobbler's Knob I see no shadow today.
I predict
that early spring is on the way.

At the Risk of Getting Political...

Hillary_1 I know the rules, there are certain things you don't talk about at the dinner table, in mixed company, or at all (if you're smart). Politics is one of those sticky subjects that you have to approach carefully. But, I feel the very strong, overwhelming need to blog about Hillary Clinton running for President! On one hand, I can't say I'm shocked that Hillary would be the first woman to run. But on the other hand, I'm surprised and excited that it's actually happening!

Despite the fact that the requirements to run for President do not include gender, one might assume that it did given the over 200 year presidential history of the United States (starting with George Washington in 1789). In order to hold office, you must be a natural born US citizen, at least 35 years of age, and a resident of the United States for at least fourteen years. As past elections have proven, it helps if you have a few political experiences on your resume as well. Somehow just being a US citizen over the age of 35 doesn't quite cut it in the eyes of the nation. Go figure!

Anyways, I myself am not a political person. In fact, I can think of about a hundred torturous things that I'd rather have done to me rather than talk politics. So, the good news is that you will not find any political rants coming from me. The bad news (for some of you) is that you will not hear my political rants and views. There are plenty of other blogs out there that are dedicated to politics. I am simply happy about the history in the making. I find it very exciting that Hillary's running for President! And in the meantime, I will show my support.

In the name of "girl power," GO HILLARY!!!

Happy Campaigning,
Payton
