Long Live Routine by OlenaInStyle.com

March, April and May are often the hardest months of the working year as they usually do not offer us a holiday or a vacation break. It is easy to become depressed and stressed when all you see is work, home and traffic. Sounds familiar? If so, there is some good news: as strange as it sounds, routine can become a background of good health. If you go to bed and wake up early, sleep enough, work and eat at the same times every day, your body will definitely thank you because it likes consistency and works better on a schedule.

It is certainly important to exercise but sometimes hard to accomplish with all the work during the day and kids in the evening. Such a situation seems kind of desperate. However, it also has solid advantages. It turns out that people who have kids, a job and a spouse (or a partner who lives in the same house) have fewer chances to become overweight after 50. Sounds encouraging.

So, exercise whenever you can, take daily vitamins, eat healthy and the next time you get stuck in traffic for an hour, remember: it is not too bad. Relax and enjoy your routine until the next vacation!

Gifts for the Directionally Challenged

We all have someone special in our lives who's directionally challenged (translation: someone who gets lost frequently). I can write about this because I am especially directionally challenged! I get lost all the time and it's very frustrating. I probably shouldn't admit this, but I sometimes get lost even when I'm using GPS in my car. Don't ask me how, I guess I'm just ultra talented. Anyway, hopefully these new GPS gadgets will help steer your special someone in the right direction.

Trackstick_3 Trackstick is a cool gadget that won't tell you where to go, but it will show you where you've been. Plug it into your computer and see the results on Google Earth for free! This is a great tool for sports enthusiasts to carry while running, cycling, horseback riding, etc. It will track anything that moves. Perhaps you have a teenager that you want to keep tabs on -- find out where they were really at when they said they were studying at the library. I know, it's not a nice thing to do, but sometimes parents gotta do what parents gotta do.

Navigon_3 Navigon GPS is the latest and greatest in GPS technology. This sleek unit is less than one-inch thick and displays 3-D images on the 4.3-inch (diagonal) color touchscreen.  Sounds like this is the GPS for me...the vocal prompter actually says street names (instead of assuming that you know how far 400 feet is).  "Turn right in 400 feet."  Say what?!?  You won't have that issue with this smart GPS.  Free traffic updates that work right out of the box. No set up and no fees.

Forerunner

The Garmin Forerunner 301 is worth more than it's weight in gold. This is the perfect gadget for sports enthusiasts. Take it with you when cycling, running, hiking, etc. to track where you've been or where you're going. There's even a multi-sport setting for triathlon! Comes with a bike mount and heart rate monitor. Upload mileage, stats, maps, and heart rate to motionbased.com. I own one of these and use it when cycling and horseback riding and it's awesome! I can see the elevation gains and losses, the weather and wind speeds and much more!

GPS to get you where you're going or tell you where you've been and how you performed. What more could you ask for for Christmas? I can think of a few things...stay tuned! More gifts to come. :o)

The Trouble with Shoes...

One of the biggest challenges I face when packing for a trip is which shoes and outfits to bring with me. You've heard the saying, "So many shoes, so little time." Well, that's how I feel when I have to choose which shoes go with me on any given trip. It often depends on how long I'm going to be away...the longer the trip, the more shoes I bring. If it's a short weekend trip, I try to get by with two and then I coordinate all my outfits to go with the shoes I choose. The selection process is hugely dependent on the activities during the trip. Packing becomes a real challenge when you don't know what's in store once you arrive at your destination (as was the case when I went to Washington a couple of weeks ago).Puma_sneakers Regardless, cute shoes for going out on the town are important, but a good pair of walking shoes are always imperative! Chances are that you'll be hoofing it quite a bit while you're on vacation.

First, be sure you pack your walking shoes. I like several brands, but Puma Sneakers are often a first pick for me. They're really comfortable and come in fun colors!

Blowfish

If it's a long trip, I like to have a cute alternate to my really comfy walking shoes. These Blowfish Shoes are the type that you walk around in for hours and they look great with more than just jeans.

Mudd_slip_on

Another alternate to a cute walking (type) shoe would be something I can slide into and give my feet a break from the normal all-encompassing lace up shoe. Regardless of the style, Mudd Shoes always deliver comfort.

Manolo_blahnik
If I'm looking for a flexible, sensible shoe that look great with dress pants, skirts, dresses or nice jeans, then I definitely pack Manolo Blahnik Heels. These are especially good if I'm limited on the number of shoes I can pack since they're so versatile.

Xhileration_wedge

If I have extra room in my suitcase, then I usually pack a nice pair of wedge heels. Despite the economical price of Xhilaration Shoes, I've gotten a lot of wear out of these cute wedges.

Vintage_pump

For longer trips or special occasion trips, I make room in my suitcase for a classy pair of Vintage Shoes. They're the icing on the cake for just about any outfit in my opinion.

In addition, I never leave home without some comfy slippers (or at the very least, slipper socks) and a pair of flip flops to wear while I'm relaxing. What kinds of shoes do you pack for vacation? Do you think I take too many pairs or not enough???

Good Times at BlogHer 2007

Blogher_2 We had a great time at BlogHer 2007! It was really cool to meet so many bloggers at one venue. What a treat! We had some really great conversations and gave away 100s of TheFind.com branded pens, shopping lists and t-shirts. It's too bad there wasn't enough time to meet everyone who attended the conference! We collected business cards from many of the bloggers who came by our table, but I know we missed a whole lot more than we collected. I've posted a link back to all those that we know came by our table. If you came by and want your link included, please comment below and I'll add you to the list.

Thanks for stopping by! We hope to see you again next year!!!

In the meantime, happy blogging/searching/shopping,
Payton

Some ATV Fun

I'm back from Seattle now and I'm feeling pretty refreshed. That's one thing about vacations that's really cool is getting away from it all really recharges your batteries. Going on vacation isn't all bad, riAtv_3ght? There are plenty of positives.

One thing we did that I don't normally do is drive ATVs. That was a lot of fun! There were six of us and only two ATVs, but we took turns and rode together, etc. It worked out really well. One of the girls nearly flipped one, but got it righted before it fell over. That was kinda scary, but cool at the same time. It's a good thing she had a helmet on!

Anyway, it's back to life as usual over here at TheFind. I'm happy to be back, but part of me wouldn't mind being on vacation still. :o)

Why I Love/Hate Vacations

I have a real love/hate relationship with vacations. There are a lot of reasons why I love them and a whole 'nother set of reasons why I hate them (mind you, hate is too strong of a word for this but I'm feeling dramatic today)...

I love to get away from it all, but I hate to prepare for it. Have you ever noticed that you do 10 times the amount of work you would normally do prior to leaving for vacation? Leaving for vacation means putting in lots of extra hours so you CAN actually jump on a plane and get out of town. It's stressful trying to get projects buttoned up and in a place where you can leave them with co-workers, but it's very necessary.  Nobody likes to be the one left behind with mashed up projects that don't make any sense, right?

I loathe packing for a trip! I'm not a big procrastinator, but for some reason I will find 100 other things to do rather than pack a suitcase. I have friends who really enjoy it and take great pride in starting their packing a week before they leave for vacation. I, on the other hand, often leave packing until the last minute. Sometimes I get lucky and do it the night before, but this is a rare occurance.

Dscn0354_2 I flew to Seattle Monday morning and at 11:15pm Sunday, I was still emailing people at work and wrapping up projects. At that point, I hadn't even pulled my suitcase out of the garage yet. I got up early Monday morning, fed my cats and dog and then retrieved my suitcase from the garage and proceeded to pack. I had no idea what to pack either because Washington weather is all over the place and I didn't have an activity agenda. Anyway, it's not just this trip specifically, it's pretty much all of them. I never know what to pack or what I'll want to wear on any given day. I mean really, does anyone plan which outfits they're going to wear in a given week? I usually end up packing several pairs of jeans/pants along with 2-3 tops for each. Luckily, I was smart enough to pack layers for this trip...I've needed them! I went shopping in Seattle yesterday and it poured rain most of the day, but I didn't pack an umbrella. So, I bought a cute compact umbrella in the afternoon and from that point forward, I didn't see a drop of rain! Thank you "rain gods."

While I'm ranting about what I hate, I'll add that I'm not wild about flying or about long road trips in the car. I'm not afraid of either activity, but I can't stand sitting for long periods of time! I think I have a bit of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I get super restless and just want to jump up and run as fast as I can! The flight to Seattle was pretty short, it was only 2 hours so I did alright on this flight. We visited the Space Needle, rode some amusement park type rides, grabbed lunch and shopped around and then got in the car for a 2 1/2 hour trip to Port Angeles. The only fun part of this leg of the trip was driving the car onto a ferry. So, I caught a break and was able to run around the ferry for about 20 minutes before being "sentenced" to more time in the car! (I know, I'm a tortured soul at times.) Admittedly, this is nothing like visiting my Grandma in North Carolina -- that's a 6+ hour flight usually with a layover and then a 2 1/2 hour drive to her house. That's just too much for me to handle, sorry. She wonders why I haven't been there for so many years.

Anyway, once I get to my destination I'm a happy camper. I love getting out of the chaos that goes with living in the Bay Area. I love having no real agenda (which is strange for me, as I'm a very scheduled person in real life). I love to hang out and not stress that I'm not doing laundry or working or insert whatever action item you want, I'm not stressing about it. I love to shop wherever I go! That's always a plus and a favorite activity for me. I love sightseeing and playing the role of tourist (even though it's cheesey and stupid, I just have to do it). Along with being a tourist, I always have to take photos with statues and stupid things that you find around most towns (that I would never take photos of or with otherwise). I love visiting family and friends, but I usually wish that we lived closer so we could spend more time together.

In the end, I typically have mixed feelings about going home. I love to go home because I miss my animals and any family/friends that I leave behind, but I usually don't want to leave whomever I'm visiting because we just didn't get enough time together. If I'm not visiting anyone then I'm usually game to go home after about 4 nights of being away. At that point, I really start to miss sleeping in my own bed.

I think that about covers my major loves and hates of vacations. How do you feel about vacationing? Do you love it hate or love/hate it? Do you have any other loves or hates that I didn't mention? I'd love to hear about them, so please share!

Travel Light with Travel Size Toiletries

Do you have the "3-1-1" on packing your carry-on luggage? It seems that every time I go to the airport there are new regulations to follow. Have you found this to be true as well? The funny thing is that I travel fairly often and find that I have to consult the regulations everytime I pack for a trip.

Here's the 3-1-1:
3 = 3 oz bottles of liquids, gels, aerosols (or less)
1 = 1 quart zipper bag
1 = 1 bag per person

If you want to get through security quickly, follow the "3-1-1," otherwise, you'll run into delays and they'll make you throw away any excess. Here's a tip: if you're traveling with others, you can use space in their carry-on for your toiletries if needed. Make sure they get to bring on what they need and supplement with any overage you may have. Click here for a full list of items that are allowed and prohibited.

Packing toiletries in your carry-on will likely include many of the following travel size (3 oz or less) items:

shampoo
conditioner
facial wash
body wash
deodorant
hairspray
styling gel
mousse
shaving cream
after shave
toothpaste
sun block
cologne
perfume
body spray

I provided some general ideas and search results above, but you can always search by brand names if you're looking for something specific. Or, purchase some travel size containers and fill them with your favorites! Best of luck with your travels and getting through security drama free.

Father's Day Adventures

Take Dad on a Father's Day adventure that he'll never forget! Forget about giving him a shirt, a tie or a new coffee mug. Take him out to have some fun!

Does your Dad enjoy sports? Take him to ESPN Zone for a hands-on sports overload! He can watch all kinds of sports just about anywhere he goes in the "Zone" on any of their 150+ monitors. Does he have a favorite sport? He can play until his heart's content. Visit your local "Zone" or travel to a location of choice: Anaheim, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, New York, or Washington D.C. Bring a camera to capture Dad in his element.

Skydive_2 Need a little more adventure for Father's Day? Take Dad skydiving! Now, that's exciting, right? You can find skydiving outfitters all over the U.S., so it's easy to stay local or to take a trip to a desired location. Make sure your Dad doesn't have any heart issues before investing in this adventure. If he has a clean bill of health, then go jump out of a plane together. I promise it will be an experience to remember. Most outfitters will video tape the jump for you as well (for a nominal fee, of course).Rafting_2

Would you prefer a water-based adventure instead of flying through the air? Take Dad to the rapids for some white water rafting! Rafting is one of those things (Do we call it a sport? I don't know.) anyway, it's one of those things can be really freakin' intense and scary and just when you think you can't take it anymore, the rapids break away to a calm, surreal stillness that you coast through quietly. Don't get too comfy though because there's another breaker around the bend! It's a real blast! Again, make sure that Dad doesn't have any heart issues before embarking on this adventure. Most outfitters will provide photos for purchase at the end of your ride.

If you read this and the first thought that came to your mind was, "That's great, my Dad hates sports and had a double by-pass two years ago, so none of these work for me." If that's the case, I suggest you go play golf. Oh come on, it's not a sport! Well, it might be if you actually walk the course, but it would better qualify as a sport if you ran the course instead. Think about it...extreme golf!

If all else fails, take him out to an outrageous dinner! Take him to a special place that you wouldn't normally dine and order one of everything on the menu. :o)

Best Friends Week -- Travel Ideas

There are few things in life that trump taking a trip with your best friend or a group of friends for that matter. Hanging out in your home town is one thing, but traveling to a place where nobody knows your name can be a whole 'nother story! You know the saying (and now ad campaign) "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." Well, let's just say you could apply that to all your trips with friends..."What happens in ________, stays in ________. If your friends are like mine then you know that the over-embellished stories will follow! So, they may not exactly *stay* in said town, but that shouldn't stop you from letting loose and having tons of fun!

I think the best trips are created to match your mood, don't you? If you're feeling like laying low and being pampered, then you should go for a spa weekend. If you feel athletic and adventurous then you should go backpacking, right? Let's go with this theme for some fabulous travel ideas based on mood...

Your Mood: Over-stressed and in need of pampering
Your Adventure: Napa Valley for a spa weekend

Take a trip to beautiful Napa Valley for a weekend of wining, dining and fabulous spa treatments!  Take the Wine Train to create an experience to suit your mood. This ride can range from a nice lunch and a tour of wineries up to a Murder Mystery Dinner on the train with you and your best friend in costume to play along. Follow up your wine train adventures with a rejuvenating mineral or mud bath, soothing massage and a fabulous facial.

Your Mood: I feel like conquering the world
Your Adventure: Camping in Yosemite and hiking Half Dome

Halfdome008_5 Hiking Half Dome is a safe way to conquer a mountain without having any technical climbing skills, but at the same time getting to the top makes you feel great! You'll need about 12 hours (give or take) to hike up, hang out at the top, and hike down again so eat a hearty breakfast and pack a good lunch before you go! For those that are experienced, you can actually rock climb up the other side of Half Dome instead of hike and rely on the cables. Best of luck!

Your Mood: Rough & tumble
Your Adventure: Horseback riding at a Dude Ranch

Dude Ranches can be found all over the United States. Once you get out on the ranch and start working the cattle, it won't even matter what state you're in because you will be so far removed from what most of us know as reality. With that said, you're just a well off to choose a ranch that's close to home and give it a whirl. I guarantee that it will be unlike any other vacation you've ever had (unless you work on a cattle ranch already). It would be wise to take a few horseback riding lessons before you go so you can focus on working the cattle and not on how to ride a horse.

Your Mood: Marathon retail therapy
Your Adventure: A multi-day trip to the Mall of America

Many people say that retail therapy cures everything. At the very least, it makes you feel better temporarily, right? If you're a believer then you'd more than likely enjoy a multi-day trip to fabulous Minnesota for a super marathon in the Mall of America! This is a 4-story mall folks with 520 stores, 50 restaurants, an indoor amusement park with more than 30 rides, an aquarium, a flight simulator and so much more. It's the only mall that I know of that offers a visitor's kit and travel packages. Major bonus: no sales tax on shoes and clothing!

Your Mood: Adventuresome
Your Adventure: African safari

Safari_2 Venture to beautiful South Africa for a wonderful safari where you'll encounter all kinds of wildlife and amazing discoveries. Depending on the safari you choose, you may venture out for most of the day and return to a thatched hut at night OR you may camp out every night. It depends on what you want out of the safari, but do whichever you prefer. Do you want to help hunt for your dinner or do you want to sit down and be served?

Your Mood: Up for a good challenge
Your Adventure: Train and compete in a triathlon

Training for a triathlon is a great way to spend time with your best friend. The longer the distances that you plan to race, the more training that's required. In addition to being a great bonding experience, a fabulous challenge for your mind and body, it's also the perfect excuse to travel to new places. Triathlons happen all over the world. Find one in a place you'd like to visit and book your trip! Be sure to arrive several days prior to the race so you can acclimate to any climate changes and try to stay at least an additional week after the race so you can enjoy the area.

Your Mood: Need for speed
Your Adventure: Cedar Point Amusement Park

Roller_coaster If you're a roller coaster afficianado then you must make your way to Cedar Point in Ohio! They boast a whopping 17 roller coasters which is more than any other amusement park in the world. What more could you ask for from an amusement park? I know, more roller coasters, cheaper prices and a multi-day pass. I couldn't agree more!

Your Mood: Relaxing day/party night
Your Adventure: Cabo San Lucas

Take your adventure to the beaches of Cabo San Lucas. This is a great place to relax by day with your best friend on the beach. Enjoy your time gossiping, drinking and playing in the water. If laying on the beach isn't your speed, you can take a variety of stimulating boat rides. Top off your relaxing day by bar hopping and dancing the night away.

I could probably write another week's worth of posts about traveling with your best friend, but I think this gives you some really good ideas of places to go and things to do. If you have any other ideas to contribute, leave a comment and I'll add it to the list. Enjoy!

Happy Traveling/Searching/Shopping,
Payton

Best Friends Week -- Travel

No_luggage In yesterday's list of things to do with your best friend, thing #100 was to take a spontaneous trip without luggage. How does that sound to you? Does it sound fun, interesting, scary, weird or just down right crazy? It sounds like fun to me! I've always wanted to take a trip without luggage. So far, the closest I've come was recently when I was in New York. I checked out of my New York hotel room and left my luggage there for them to hold while I met up with some friends from New Jersey. Meanwhile, the friend I was traveling with went back to the hotel to pick up her luggage and picked up mine as well. It was a nice thing for her to do, but we were staying in different parts of New Jersey that night, so I was stuck without any luggage! Oops! We stopped at a drug store and picked up a few essentials and made the journey to New Jersey. I met up with my travel buddy the next night and was reunited with my stuff. So, that's the closest I've come. Have you ever traveled without luggage? What's your story?

Come back tomorrow for travel ideas with your best friend!

From Car Seats to Heelys Shoes

Whether you realize it or not, from the time babies are born, they require lots of gadgets. If you're a parent, you know what I'm talking about. When new parents leave the hospital, they're required to put the baby in an infant car seat before they can take the newborn home. And yes, the hospitals do verify that you use a car seat. It's funny that they make sure you have a car seat, but they don't make sure that you have diapers. A friend of mine had a baby recently and she didn't have any newborn diapers at home. She didn't even think of it! Sorry, I've digressed.

Car_seat Anyway, the infant car seats last until the baby is about 22 lbs and/or 29 inches long. From there, the baby graduates to a convertible car seat. These seats are used until the baby's about 40 lbs. They're convertible because you can use them rear facing or foward facing. It is suggested that  the car seat remain rear facing until the baby is a year old and at least 20 lbs.

Once the child is about 4 years old and 40 lbs, they move on to a booster car seat. Booster seats work work with a regular seat belt. The booster raises the child up high enough so that the shoulder strap and lap belt properly restrain the child. Children should remain in booster car seats until they reach the age of 8 and/or they're 4 feet, 9 inches tall.  Once they reach that height, they should be big enough to ride in a car without a booster and have the seat belt fit them properly. Children should ride in the backseat until the age of 12.

Jog_stroller_2 Outside the car, little ones require other types of "wheels." Most babies start out in strollers, which come in all shapes and sizes depending on your needs and lifestyle. I've noticed that many parents start off with big fancy strollers, but they quickly move on to the easy-to-use umbrella strollers. While the sporty parents invest in jogging strollers.

Naturally, kids move on to ride tricycles, scooters, bicycles made for girls or boys. Some kids even zip around town wearing Heelys shoes. The list goes on and on, but I'm pretty sure I've made my point. Babies and kids require a lot of gadgets. The bigger they get, the more expensive the gadgets. Hence the "need" for a hot rod to cure a mid-life crisis! ;o)

Here Comes Peter Cottontail...

Here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail. Hippity hoppity Easter's on it's way. Do you remember singing that song as a child while you impatiently waited for Easter to arrive? I certainly do!

Easter marks the start of Spring when all the beautiful flowers bloom and animals give birth to Spring litters. It sounds so Disney-like, but it is typically a beautiful time of year. Easter Sunday is a religious holiday for many, but the younger set tend to be focused on the Easter Bunny, Easter baskets full of candy and toys, and Easter egg hunts.

Easter_eggs When I was 10 years old, my Grandma started conducting very elaborate Easter egg hunts.  She would  set it up as a scavenger hunt with crazy clues that had us kids running all over her 36 acres of land. Each clue would bring you to an egg, along with another clue. There were also randomly hidden eggs that weren't tied to clues. I think she did that to throw us off a bit. Anyway, the clues would get increasingly more difficult as we go closer to the end. At the end of the hunt, we'd find the final clue to our Easter baskets. It was great fun!

Chocolate_bunny I really enjoyed the hunt, but the real treat was finding the basket full of goodies. I could care less about jelly beans; I used to throw them at my step-brother. All I cared about was the chocolate!  Grandma knew that I didn't waste time with the hollow bunnies. I was all about the solid chocolate! Okay, I still am, let's be real. Regardless, the baskets were full of sweets and fun little toys to play with that kept us occupied until dinner was served.

Dinner was always an elaborate multi-course affair with enough food to food to feed an army! The food was top notch and Grandma always provided several desserts. Needless to say, Easter at Grandma's was always a favorite of mine.

Happy Easter,
Payton

Shop Online for Christmas Delivery

Believe it or not, there's still time to shop online and have your packages delivered by Christmas! There are quite a few sites delivering for lofty prices, but our friends at LLBean feel your pain and they're not charging extra (if you order by noon Dec. 21st). I know, I'm with ya...I'm still scrambling to make all my purchases in time for Monday.

There are many great finds at LLBean, but some of my favorites are as follows:
Slippers_1
Packable Slippers
If I had these, I wouldn't have to drag slipper socks around with me everywhere I go. These would even keep my feet dry when I venture onto a wet floor.

Ice_creams
Ice Cream Ball
In just 20 (short) minutes, you can make and shake a pint of ice cream for yourself. I'm thinking this is a good therapy tool for those woe-ful crying over a pint of ice cream nights. Shake the heck out of this thing and you may not need to cry.

Sleds
Flexible Flyer Sleds
Sleds don't get much better than these aerodynamic beauties! I can just picture the whole family rippin' down a snow covered hill on one of these. (One person per sled, of course.)

Find these cool items and more...hurry...you only have about 40 hours left to order before you miss Christmas! No pressure. :o)

Functional in Bed...

Give the gift of comfort. It's easy with finds like these. And, these are gifts you can give to the person in your life who (seemingly) has everything! I bet they don't have all of these gems. Of course, they may never get out of bed again, but who am I to predict the future?!?

Read_and_relax_multi_pillow This is the Read and Relax Multi Pillow. The name says it all. Gone are the days of stacking multiple pillows in order to get comfy. This is all you (er, um your friend or loved one) need.

Peeramid_reading_pillow
You can't go wrong with the Peeramid Reading Pillow. This handy pillow sits comfortably on your lap, holds your book open and can bookmark the page. I think next year's design ought to take notes too!

Happineck
Imak HappiNeck Pillow relieves neck and upper back stress. This pillow is great for use on the road or at home.

Cuddle_wrap

Keep your loved ones warm and cozy in a Cuddle Wrap. These are great in and out of bed. It's like taking your bed with you!
